Philly Women's Summer Basketball League: Maroon/USciences Still Setting the Pace

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg (@womhoopsguru)

HATBORO, Pa. – The Maroon/USciences and Forest Green/West Chester squads maintained their 1-2 advantage and the six-team logjam right behind them got cut to four Thursday night as the 11-game season passed the three-quarter turn and entered the stretch drive in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s NCAA-Certified Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Two teams, Purple, which has a forfeit win from two weeks ago to be applied next Thursday, but otherwise has yet to win on the court, and the Pink/Penn State-Abington squad, were formally eliminated with three games remaining until any ties in the final standings get broken and seeds get determined for the eight-team playoffs that begin with quarterfinals on July 27 and then finish out the following Tuesday and Thursday the first week in August with the semifinals and the championship.

Purple, dominated by Delaware Valley on the roster, did go down with a fight, threatening Forest Green before the West Chester squad righted itself for the second straight outing.

Though many are knocking on the door right now, especially the top two, some loopholes mathematically exist before the playoff squads begin getting named.

But that surely will start happening Tuesday night.

The Red/Chestnut Hill squad gave up a second forfeit Thursday night, enabling the Royal Blue/Kutztown group to stay in the third-place 5-3 crowd with the Black/Thomas Jefferson (formerly Philadelphia U.), surging White, and Electric Green teams.

Royal Blue, off the change in the teams involved in the tiebreaks and uneven number of games involved in the procedure for now, benefitted and hopped up into the third spot in front of White but the Kutztown contingent still must play the two frontrunners in its final three games.

In any case, that’s six teams overall just discussed but right behind them and still in playoff contention are Orange/Holy Family and Sun/Ursinus at 4-4 with Sky Blue next at 3-5 on our standings.

Remember, though, that Sky Blue has a win yet to be applied and only two games left based on the moves made earlier this month off forfeits that already are applied in the commissioner’s standings.

Everything will right itself next Thursday in terms of equal number of games before the remaining final night of July 25th rolls around.

So it will be wild down below as to who finally gets in and Red, just behind Sky Blue, needs a win Tuesday and maybe win out though some tiebreak advantage could loom since there are key games left for everyone.

Maroon, for example, has Orange, Royal Blue, and Sun left, meaning on one hand if they lose out they could fall into a tiebreak for seed and/or qualification EXCEPT Sun and Orange, who are tied for seventh a game behind the third-place group and a game or half, depending which standings you are reading, must still play each other, so the winner will likely eliminate the other.

Most of the top teams played heavy underdogs so they maintained the pace but there were some notable occurrences in Thursday’s action.

In the Guru’s special 20-points or more nightly individual citation, the number bolted from two to four but continued to be dominated by Saint Joseph’s senior Chelsea Woods of Electric Green, who had 31, the top performance in the league Thursday and one more than her previous season high.

She has gotten 20 or more points in six of her eight appearances and was the Big Five’s most improved player last season, starring for the Hawks during their run through the Atlantic 10 standings to one of the top positions.

Another Hawk, senior Amanda Fioravanti, who has had multiple 20 plus nights, also at six playing for White, had 22 in the win over Sun while that total was matched by Maroon/USciences freshman Irisa Ye out of North Penn, who gained her season high and first night in the golden circle.

Fioravanti, by the way, has the season’s top performance, scoring 41 against Sky Blue on June 27th.

Black/Thomas Jefferson U’s Beverly Kum of Saint Maria Gorretti, had the other big game, scoring 24 for the group, which was previously known until this month as Philadelphia University.

Forest Green’s Jennifer Horvatinovic just missed for the West Chester group scoring 19 points.

Looking Ahead

The top attraction Tuesday in terms of records has White and Electric Green at 5-3 each meeting at 8:15 on Court 3 as part of the three sets of doubleheaders that begin at 7 p.m.

The gym is located at 2950 Turnpike Drive in Hatboro just off the intersection of Davisville Road and Byberry Road, not far from the 611 exit of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Other games have Sky Blue meeting Black, trying to stay in the playoff hunt in a game played at 7 also on Court 3.

Orange has its hands full meeting Maroon at 8:15 on Court 1, though both teams are familiar to each other as Holy Family (Orange) and Maroon (USciences) playing in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

Red (2-6), trying to stay alive, plays Sun/Ursinus (4-4) at 7 on Court 2.

Breaking Ties

Though the schedule in the procedure is still uneven, it didn’t take rocket science to set the seed/standings positions.

All alone in first and second are Maroon (7-1) and Forest Green (6-2) with Maroon’s sole loss to White to date.

The four-team third place group at 5-3 are Royal Blue, White, Electric Green, and Black.

Remember, class, how we break ties of multiples by putting them into a mini-league and see their records against each other.

Royal Blue at 2-1 had the best record to move to the third seed, while White and Electric Green were next at 1-1 but have yet to play each other, so White got the nod off the best win, having topped Maroon.

Then Black rounded out at sixth with 1-2 in the mix.

Tied for seventh were Sun and Orange at 4-4 and they have yet to play each other so looking for premium wins, Orange got seventh with wins over Electric Green and Royal Blue from the group above, while Orange just had a Royal Blue win.

The rest are all in single file unbound, with Sky Blue (3-5), Red (2-6), and officially eliminated from the post season Pink (1-7) and Purple (0-8).

So here’s Bob with the recaps of all five games played, keeping in mind there was the season’s fourth forfeit preventing the sixth game of the night to go on.

Thursday Recaps

Team Forest Green. 77, Purple 66

Team Forest Green, also known as West Chester University,  had to play from behind again this week only in Thursday night’s contest against Team Purple, also known as Delaware Valley University, the result was different.

Forest Green rallied to earn a 77-66 win over Purple to remain one game behind first place Maroon who won earlier in the evening.

University of Tampa grad Jen Horvatinovic led Forest Green with 19 points.  Mia Hopkins added 18 while Siani McNeil scored 12. Rylee Power chipped in ten points.

Horvatinovic and Hopkins were deadly from beyond the arc with the former shooting three triples and the latter nailing five three-balls.

Purple was led by a trio of Archbishop Ryan graduates.  Sophomores Ashley Smink and Danielle Skedzielewski had 17 and 14 points respectively while Brittany Wood, a 2015 DVU, grad also scored 14.

Smink had three triplets and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line while Wood shot four 3-balls.

Forest green trailed by double digits throughout much of the opening quarter as Purple jumped all over the Forest Green squad early, scoring four straight baskets, including three  three-point field goals to take an 11-0 lead.

Purple maintained their double digit advantage until the waning minutes of the first quarter before Forest Green scored five of the final six points in the period to close within six 24-18.

A 7-1 run to open the second quarter gave Forest Green their first lead of the game at 26-25 only to see Purple retake the lead at 28-27 and later at 37-34.

Forest Green scored the final eight points of the quarter to reclaim the advantage and take a 42-37 lead into the break.

Purple connected with the long ball again in the third quarter, making four threes in the first 4:11 with Smink’s three-ball giving her squad the lead at 49-47 at the 5:49 mark.  The Delaware Valley group, trying to get its first win not via forfeit route, extended the lead to four 53-49 before Horvatinovic scored five straight points to produce another lead change and swing the pendulum back to Forest Green at 54-53.

Forest Green took command in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter with ten straight points to lead 69-55 with 7:26 remaining.

Purple would come no closer than 11 points the rest of the way as Forest Green earned the hard-fought 77-66 win and dropped Purple from the playoff race.

Team Maroon 83, Team Pink 35

eam Maroon, also known as University of the Sciences, maintained sole possession of first place, cruising to an 83-35 win over Team Pink, also known as Penn State-Abington.

Four players scored in double figures for the Maroon squad led by North Penn HS grads and USCI freshmen Irisa Ye and Jess Huber.

Ye, who was 7-for-8 from the line, scored a season-high 22 points while Huber added 18.   Alex Thomas and Colleen Walsh each scored ten points while Haley Helms nailed three three-point field goals en route to nine points.

Shayna Rodriguez led the Pink squad with 14 points while Bryn Athyn College junior Samantha Hicks added 11.

Pink, eliminated from playoff contention, scored five of the first six points but a 21-6 run by the Maroon squad produced a 22-11 lead after one period.

Maroon ran off the first 11 points of the second quarter, doubling their lead to 33-11. Six of those points came off the hands of Ye along with a three-ball from Laura Trisch and a bucket from Thomas.

USciences finished off the quarter on a 16-7 flourish to lead by 31 at the break 49-18.

The lead increased to 42 points, 70-28 by the end of the third quarter, and peaked at 48 points with the final score of 83-35.

Team Electric Green 81, Team Sky Blue 66

Team Electric Green remains one of four teams deadlocked for third place with a 5-3 record earning an 81-66 win over Team Sky Blue, who drops to 4-5 with the loss.

St. Joseph’s senior and Frieire Charter HS graduate Chelsea Woods led all scorers with 31 points.  Emily Walls, a junior from Moravian College, and Morgan Maturani, a junior from Salisbury University, added 12 points apiece with Maturani a perfect 6-for-6 from the line.

University of Pennsylvania sophomore Kendall Grasela led Sky Blue with 18 points, as the member of the two-time defending Ivy champs connected with four 3-pointers.  Taylor Dunn added 13 points and Erin Lindahl chipped in nine.

Sky Blue used a 12-4 run to open the second quarter, turning a tie game into a 27-19 advantage  before Woods and the Electric Green squad rallied with a 19-4 flourish to take a 38-31 lead at the break.

Two baskets from Lindahl capped a 9-5 mini-run by Sky Blue, currently outside the playoff loop, brining the team within three 43-40 at the six-minute mark.

A 10-3 run by electric Green pushed the lead back to ten before Dunn’s three-ball cut the margin to seven, 53-46 heading into the final quarter.

Three-pointers from Walls and Woods started a 13-5 run to open the fourth quarter and put Electric Green firmly in control with a 66-51 lead.  Electric Green expanded their lead to as many s 22 points before settling in for the 15 point win, 81-66.

Team Black 79, Team Orange 55

Team Black, also known as Jefferson University (formerly Philadelphia U.) kept pace with the gridlock with a 79-55 win over Team Orange also known as Holy Family University.  The two squad are also in-season rivals with both being members of the CACC.

Black had six players score nine or more points with junior Beverly Kum leading the way with 24 points.  Sophomore Alynna Williams scored 13 while fellow sophomore Ayoola Oguntuase added ten.  Jess Kaminski, Sabria Lytes and Caitlyn Cunningham had nine points apiece.

Holy Family freshman Meghan Hughes had 13 points to pace the Orange squad while sophomore Liz Radley added 12.

Eight lead changes highlighted a back and forth first quarter before Team Black opened up a three point advantage at the endof the period 21-18.

Orange rallied to retake the lead in the second quarter with a 7-3 run to go up by one 25-24. Black later tied the score twice and took the lead back on two baskets from Kum.

After two made free throws by Orange’s Asia Turner, the Black squad closed out the half with 12 straight points to lead 43-29 at the break.

The lead was extended to 21 points by the end of the third quarter at 67-46 and increased to 24 by game’s end at 79-55.

Team White 70, Team Sun 56

The final game pitted another pair of teams deadlocked for the third place slot as Team White pulled away late to keep pace with Black, Electric Green and Royal (a forfeit winner over Red), defeating Team Sun, also known as Ursinus College 70-56.

St. Joseph’s senior Amanda Fiorvanti led all scorers with 22 points to pace the White squad.  Mary Sheehan added 12 points, while Briana Winston chipped in ten.

Team Sun was led by UPenn junior Deja Jackson’s 15 points.  Ursinus sophomore Marisa DiLeo added 14 points while another Penn junior Kristen Daley chipped in 13.

White scored the final eight points of the first quarter to break a 6-6 tie and take a 14-6 lead.

A pair of three-balls from the Sun squad closed the gap to 14-12 before a 6-2 mini run by White pushed the lead back to six 20-14.

The sun squad closed within one twice in the quarter before White exploded for 11 straight points to end the period with a 39-27 lead at halftime.

Sheehan’s three-pointer to open the third quarter pushed the lead to 15, 42-27 as the Sun squad could not put a dent into the White team’s lead, trailing by 16 entering the final period.

A basket from Jackson a three-ball from DiLeo opened the fourth quarter as Sun drew within 11 only to have White’s Caroline DiPillis take the air out Sun’s momentum with a three-ball of her own with 5:44 left to make the score 60-46.

Sun could get no closer than 12 points the rest of the way as White cruised to a 14-point, 70-56 win.
