Philly Women's Summer Basketball League: Maroon and Forest Green Take First Place in Crowded Race
By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg (@womhoopsguru)
HATBORO, Pa. – A wild race indeed as the 11-game Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s NCAA Summer Basketball League arched past the halfway point Thursday night following the July 4th break and now heads until five more Tuesday and Thursdays of mostly three doubleheaders the rest of the regular season at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades in Hatboro.
Two forfeits by the Orange/Holy Family and Red/Chestnut Hill squads caused a little creativity and an instant schedule shift, which longtime commissioner David Kessler will explain a few sections below in comments that will be part of the next nightly newsletter he gives out at the games.
But they also caused a temporary divergence in the Guru’s standings and off of them tiebreaks than the commissioner’s but after July 20th prior to the last night of the regular season on July 25th each of the 12 teams records will match.
The Guru is doing it this way to avoid a temporary extra game in the standings and to help project tie-breaking scenarios because we have a dandy right now with five teams in this blog all bunched in fifth causing one extra one to stretch beyond the eight-team cutoff that will determine the playoff qualifying and seeds.
With the commissioner having a temporary extra win for Sky Blue and the Guru withholding the triumph we still both have the squad ahead of that bunch.
Meanwhile, since we last arrived here in Hatboro, Team Black in its real identity is no longer Philadelphia University but after the merger Thomas Jefferson University. And prior to the previous name, many oldtimers remember when the school was known as Philadelphia Textile.
Meanwhile, for the highlighting results before Bob comes with the recaps the previous four-way tie for first is now a tie-way tie with Maroon, also known as USciences, and Forest Green, also known as West Chester, following the Maroon 62-51 win over Electric Green and Forest Green’s 70-60 win over the Sun/Ursinus group.
Just a game behind, Orange, with the forfeit assessment, and the Royal Blue/Kutztown competitors are in third and fourth.
Then comes the logjam for fifth and the Guru has them in their proper seed alignment if the season just ended so Sun is in the five-way tie but on the outside of the qualifying spot.
Red and Pink are two games behind the playoff spot and even if you were to give Purple their forfeit win over red right now, they’d still be in last place.
As far as the Guru’s nightly 20 or more points by individuals performance, just two made the standard and both first-timers this season as Sierra Taylor in Royal Blue/Kutztown’s 70-62 loss to Black scored 22 for the graduate of Camden Catholic while in Purple’s 77-58 loss to Sky Blue in a game involving two teams who were on site with idle time off their forfeit wins Ashley Smink from Archbishop Ryan scored 21.
Just a point off the mark with 19 each, in Sky Blue’s win over Purple, Erin Lindahl, an Emory sophomore from Germantown Academy, collected that total as did Symantha Marrero, the Central High grad playing for Pink in the team’s 68-47 loss to White, that is shaking off an historic slow start.
That said, the Guru turns the next section over to Commissioner Kessler.
The Commissioner’s Notes on Forfeits and Scheduling
Sky and Purple were scheduled to play each other on July 20, but they played each other Thursday, which means that on July 20 – both will now have an open slot.
Credit goes to Purple’s Danielle Skedzielewski, a Delaware Valley junior out of Archbishop Ryan, for this idea. Both Sky and Purple were there, they wanted to play, AND there was an open court.
Thanks to Taylor Kelly and Sandra and Selena Marrero for pinch hitting at the score/timekeeping
tables to substitute for Alainis Jean Baptiste and Samantha & Lindsey Spector who were participating in a tournament.
As for scheduling and this past holiday week, I would have liked to give the entire league a bye also Thursday , but thought since it was TWO days after the July 4th holiday – I could get away with scheduling.
Aside from the 2 forfeits (and Team Pink having no subs), attendance with the other 9 teams was actually pretty good. The problem is that I really needed the date.
The NCAA doesn’t permit its NCAA student-athletes to play before June 15, and we can’t play deeper into August because these women start heading back to school.
Also, experience shows that we would have forfeits in August due to family vacations, etc. In fact, we’ll have a forfeit this coming Tuesday July 11, because Team Royal (comprised mostly of Kutztown players) needs to be at school to conduct a camp.
Looking Ahead
The Guru’s footnotes in the standings and schedules will also track the forfeits so the Thursday instant outcomes resulting in wins will have those conversions at the right moment when the Guru and Commissioner numbers hit the equal mark.
Meanwhile, with a tight race when Tuesday’s games resume, the Commissioner already told you that Royal is going to drop a forfeit, which will level them to 4-3 dropping them into at least a tie with Sun, which will elevate out of the current 3-3 logjam.
White, attempting to continue a surge out of 3-3 will be facing Orange/Holy Family coming out of Thursday’s forfeit loss at 4-2 on Court 2 at 7 p.m. while a key records match on Court 3 at the same time will have Forest Green/West Chester at 5-1 facing Electric Green at 3-3.
Maroon will take its 5-1 record and top seed spot for the moment into an 8:15 nightcap on Court 2 against Sky Blue, the top team in the fifth-place gridlock.
Breaking Ties
Ok fasten your seat belts for the latest installment of qualify and seed.
As was noted, Maroon/USciences and Forest Green/West Chester are tied for first but if seeding had to be done right now, Maroon gets the nod off a head-to-head pulsating double overtime win several weeks ago.
In the third place at 4-2 a game off the pace between Orange/Holy Family and Royal Blue/Kutztown that may get in a new pileup off the looming forfeit but until then, Orange, also off a head-to-head gets third while Royal Blue gets fourth.
Now, a remember we go into a divergence because we are temporarily holding Sky Blue’s forfeit win back while the commissioner already gave two wins Thursday night, we start with the mini-league creation and Sky Blue with us without the surplus win takes the fifth seed at 2-0 in the mix.
White and Electric Green both at 1-1 and without a head-to-head yet places White in sixth off the season-opening win over Maroon for the best win between the two and thus Electric Green gets seventh.
That leaves Black and Sun at 1-2 in the lineup and Black has a head-to-head over Sun for the eighth and ninth slot.
Red and Pink have identical 1-5 marks and Red has the best win over Sky Blue for the 10th spot and then 11th with Purple yet to achieve a true court win and the forfeit win temporarily withheld.
So all that said, here’s Bob with the team by team action.
The Recaps
Team Black 70, Team Royal Blue 62
Team Royal Blue, also known as Kutztown University dropped their second consecutive game after opening the season at 4-0, losing to Team Black also known as Thomas Jefferson University (formerly Philadelphia U.) 70-62.
Sophomores Alyanna Williams and Ayoola Oguntuase led Team Black with 11 and ten points respectively while Caitlyn Cunningham chipped in nine. Kutztown sophomore Sierra Taylor led all scorers with 22 points while junior Kiki Ferguson added 11.
Black opened the game with a 13-5 flourish only to see Royal Blue whittle their eight point lead to two at the end of the quarter, 15-13.
After a Black bucket to open the second, Royal Blue went on a 12-5 run to take their first lead of the game 25-22 midway through the quarter. Royal Blue still led by two 28-26 late in the period when Cunningham started a 10-0 run with a traditional three-point play. Williams closed out the run with a layup putting Black up 36-28 at the break.
The run was extended to 14-0 when Black scored the first four points of the third quarter to take a 40-28 lead. Royal Blue batted back with a 17-9 uprising fueled by Taylor and Michaela Clay to close the gap to four 49-45 with 3:40 left.
Black doubled their margin back to eight by the end of the quarter, 59-51.
Baskets from Williams, Cunningham and Jessica Kaminski helped Black push their lead back to double figures 66-55 midway through the final period. A Taylor Thames bucket followed before a Williams 3-ball pushed the lead to 12 69-57 with 3:46 left.
Royal Blue scored five of the game’s final six points to make the final score 70-62. The score was the closest of the five games played on Thursday.
Black evens their record at 3-3 while Royal Blue falls to 4-2.
Team Maroon 62, Team Electric Green 61
Team Maroon, also known as USciences easily handled Team Electric Green with a 62-51 victory to maintain a share of first place in the league standings while securing their fifth straight win.
Maroon improves to 5-1 while Electric Green is 3-3.
The Maroon team again produced a balanced scoring effort and made good use of the long ball, making 11 three-point field goals on the night.
Senior Colleen Walsh led the victors with 13 points (three three-pointers) while incoming freshman Irisa Ye added 12 (two three-point FG).
Junior Alex Thomas also had two three-point field goals en route to 11 points while junior guard Alyx McKiernan nailed a trio of three-balls and finished with ten points.
St Joseph’s senior Jaryn Garner led all scorers in the game with 16 points while Samantha Stipa added 11. Fellow St. Joe’s teammate Chelsea Woods added ten points.
Maroon proved how defense wins games, holding Electric Green without a field goal the entire second quarter while outscoring them 14-3 to take a 34-12 lead at half.
The game also marked the fourth time this season that Maroon, who has the best scoring defense average in the league, allowing 49.2 ppg., has held an opponent to 51 or fewer points.
Electric Green however did battle back using a 13-3 run to start the third quarter to close within 12, 37-25 with 4:41 left.
This would be as close as they would come in the period as a Walsh three-ball put Maroon up by 18 late in the quarter 48-30 before Electric Green scored the final three points of the period to trail by 15.
Maroon maintained their double digit lead throughout the final quarter holding a very scrappy and tenacious Electric Green team at bay with the final score marking as close as they would come to the Maroon squad since early in the first quarter when they trailed 12-4.
Team Forest Green 70, Sun 60
Team Forest Green, also known as West Chester University held off Team Sun, also known as Ursinus College to maintain a share of first place with a 70-60 win in one of the early games of the evening.
Forest Green improves to 5-1 while Sun falls to 3-3.
Jenny Horvatinovic, a recent University of Tampa grad, led Forest Green with 17 points, while Pittston Area senior Mia Hopkins added 15 points and Siani McNeil, a sophomore out of Delco Christian chipped in 14.
Lydia Konstanzer, a sophomore from Pennridge high school, led Team Sun with 17 points. Alana Davidson, a New Hope-Solebury HS grad and soon to be a Davidson College freshman, added ten points.
Four lead changes highlighted the first quarter with Forest Green holding a slim 18-15 lead at the end of the period.
Team Sun kept the game close and took a 27-25 lead on Marisa DiLeo’s three-point field with four minutes to go. Forest Green however roared back with a 19-5 uprising to close out the half and take a 43-32 lead at the break.
Team Sun shined in the first 5:30 of the third quarter, using a 11-3 burst to close within three 46-43 before a three-ball from Forest Green doubled the deficit to 49-43.
Konstanzer’s bucket with1:52 left closed the gap to four 49-45 but Forest Green closed out the quarter with a 6-2 mini run to lead by eight 55-47.
Team Sun closed within six 55-49 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter but were unable to come any closer the rest of the way.
Horvatinovic’s three-ball with 1:54 left put the lead back into double digits at 68-56 before settling in for the ten-point win, 70-60.
Team White 68, Team Pink 47
Team White won their second consecutive game, pulling away from an undermanned Team Pink squad in the second half as they cruised to a 68-47 win to even their record at 3-3.
Kutztown grad Ashley Wood led four White players in double figures with 13 points.
Mary Sheehan, a St. Joe’s freshman, added 12 points while Nia Holland, a Lafayette junior and Jasmine Elum, a Bethune-Cookman grad and the lone player from an HBCU institution in the league, chipped in ten points apiece.
Symantha Marrero led the Pink squad with 19 points. Samantha Hicks scored 13 while Shayna Rodriguez chipped in ten.
Only five players were available for the game for the Pink squad.
Pink jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before White turned the tables with a 12-5 spurt take a brief 14-12 lead. Two three-balls from Marrero closed out the quarter and put Pink back on top 18-16.
White scored the first five points of the second quarter to retake the lead 21-18 before setting in for a four point lead 31-27 at the break.
White blew the game open in the second half, closing out the third quarter with an 11-3 flourish to lead 54-37 going into the final quarter. White extended the lead as fourth quarter wore on finishing with an 8-2 run to record the 22-point win, 68-47.
Team Sky Blue 77, Team Purple 58
Sky Blue led wire-to-wire as they cruised to a 22-point win, 77-55 over Team Purple, also known as Delaware Valley University.
Sky Blue becomes the fifth team in the league to hold a 3-3 record with the win while Purple remains winless on the courts this season.
A trio of Germantown Academy graduates paced the Sky Blue squad led by Emory University sophomore Erin Lindahl’s 19 points.
Olivia Gorman, a Wesleyan junior and Kendall Grasela, a Penn sophomore, rounded out the GA trio with 16 and 15 points respectively.
St. Joseph’s University junior Whisper Fisher, out of Owings Mills HS in Maryland, also had 16 points for Sky Blue.
Two Archbishop Ryan grads, Ashley Smink and Danielle Skedzielewski, led the Purple squad with21 and 15 points respectively. Recent East Stroudsburg University graduate Courtney Brown also had 15 points.
Sky Blue used a 15-6 flourish to open the second quarter, putting some distance between themselves and the Purple squad, 33-187 with 4:10 left in the half. Purple cut three points of the deficit by halftime, 38-26.
In third quarter, Sky Blue maintained their double digit lead throughout the period, taking a 55-41 lead as the quarter came to a close. They extended the lead as the fourth quarter wore on before finishing with a 77-55 win
