Guru's Philly Summer League Report: Kuester Leads Lime Green Scoring Outburst In Finals Opener

By Mel Greenberg

HATBORO, Pa. --
Unlike their narrow 65-62 semifinals win over Cardinal Red last Thursday night, there was no need for last-minute heroics for defending champion Lime Green Tuesday night in the opener of the best-of-three finals series against Black in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women's NCAA Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gymnasium in lower Bucks County.

After a brief Black rally in the opening minutes that narrowed the deficit, Lime Green, the top seed which went 11-0 on the regular season slate, started connecting shots and went on to an easy 85-54 victory to move within one win of claiming another title.

That could come as early as Wednesday night when the two teams will meet again on Court 1 at 7:30 p.m. unless Black, the second seed, evens the series to force a decisive game three same time and place Thursday night.

Lime Green defeated Black 76-57 in the regular season.

Leading the way for Lime Green were two previous Saint Joseph's-Villanova rivals in the Big Five series who graduated last spring.

Former Hawks star Katie Kuester, whose father John Kuester is an assistant coach on the NBA Los Angeles Lakers, had another big scoring night, knocking down a game-high 22 points, the fourth time this summer she has scored 20 or more points in a game.

Kuester nailed four three-pointers as did former Wildcats star Megan Pearson, who finished with 14 points.

Wednesday night could be Kuester's final appearance in summer league action, barring an extension to a third game Thursday night.

"We got a lot of tips and deflections and it led us to a few breaks and a few easy shots," said Kuester, who will be a graduate assistant at Lehigh University when school resumes and, hence, under NCAA rules would not be able to play again next summer when on the payroll of an NCAA school. "But tomorrow night is a clean slate so that will be the test."

But Kuester sounds like she's ready to move on to the next page in her career after being one of Saint Joseph's top outside threats besides playing on Lime Green.

"This is it. But you know this league has been great for me and it's great to see the young kids," Kuester said. "I think this is going to be my official retirement but this league has been great to me so I appreciate it."

The scoring parade on Lime Green also included 15 points from Jenn Prine, a recent graduate of Shepherd University; 11 from Dana Mitchell, a 2010 graduate of Saint Bonaventure; and 12 from incoming Lehigh freshman Elizabeth Sharlow.

Lime Green's Alicia Manning, an incoming senior at Lafayette, scored seven points, while Lehigh incoming sophomore Katelyn O'Reilly scored four points to finish accounting the total points for the winners.

The ambience of the event in front of a sizeable crowd was enhanced with longtime commissioner David Kessler taking the public address system to announce the scoring as it occured.

Kessler retired from the Philadelphia's Dept. of Recreation in 2009 and again is torn as he always is this time of year as the competition draws to a close.

"On one hand from a working aspect, you're glad it's almost over, " said Kessler, who can be contacted for information about the league at deucedbk@comcast.net. "But on the other hand I always start missing all these great and wonderful people involved with the league as players, referees, coaches, as well as the parents and friends who come watch the games."

Kerry Kinek, an incoming Lehigh freshman from Central Catholic High in Allentown, scored a team-high 14 points for Black, which went 9-2 in the regular season that began play in June .

Black tied Hunter Green for second but took the second seed on a head-to-head tiebreaker before beating Hunter Green again last Thursday in the semifinals to advance to the championship series.

Villanova also has two players on Black, the maximun the NCAA allows Division I individuals from the same school in summer competition except for the addition of incoming freshmen who have yet to officially enroll.

Wildcats senior Rachel Roberts scored 10 points, while Villanova incoming junior Emily Leer scored 11 points.

The Team Black squad is coached by Keith Wood, whose daughter Ashley scored two points and will be an incoming senior at Kutztown when classes resume.

Colgate incoming sophomore Stephanie Schultz scored 10 points out of the Black offense, while recent Bethune-Cookman graduate Jasmine Elum scored seven points.

Black was the fourth-best defensive team in the league but couldn't contain Lime Green, which was the top scoring team averaging 74.8 points per game and top defensive team yielding a meager 48.7 average.

Black, which allowed 57.3 points, was second best in scoring with a 70.4 average.

Lime Green is headed by Ted Hagedorn and his assistant Tom Freedman.

Hagedorn's daughter Elle on the Lime Green roster will be a senior at Harvard this fall.

He was relieved to have an easier time of it after the narrow win in the semifinals.

"Think about it, the last time out we had a two-point lead with about 3 1/2 minutes to go," Hagedorn said. "And then we had a run at the end of the game. This time we made our shots and our defense was able to keep them off the scoreboard.

"Across the board we have a great defensive team besides having kids who can score," Hagedorn added. "All of our guards and all of our bigs can play great defense and that was the story tonight. We held a team like that to 54 points.

"Meg Pearson didn't struggle like last time and made some threes. Katie Kuester, as usual, scores from outside. Then Dana Mitchell can go to work and Liz Sharlow is very effective inside. I think she's really going to help Lehigh. She and Kinek will be a pair for that team."

Alex Smith, a junior at Holy Cross, was missing from Black because she is traveling with an All-Star team in Europe. This is a month many college teams travel abroad and play exhibitions. Saint Joseph's is going to Ireland this weekend and begun practice this week but all summer teams that contained Hawks were eliminated avoiding conflicts.

"Her Holy Cross coach Bill Gibbons let me know about Alex and said she was really bummed out about missing the finals," Kessler related.

Kuester is making the Ireland trip with her alma mater but will not be playing. Hunter Green, which fell in the quarterfinals, had four Saint Joseph's players: incoming junior Erin Shields, incoming senior Shelby Smith, and incoming freshmen Ciara Andrews and Sarah Fairbanks. Gold, which went winless and didn't make the playoffs, had incoming senior Ashley Prim and incoming freshman Jordan Strode.
