Guru's Philly Summer League Report: Kuester's 26-Point Outburst Leads Lime Green To Quarterfinal Win

By Mel Greenberg

HATBORO, Pa. --
On what is essentially her farewell tour, recent Saint Joseph's graduate Katie Kuester had another big night, scoring 26 points Tuesday to lead defending champion and top-seeded Lime Green to a 72-51 win over eighth-seeded Purple in one of the four quarterfinals at the playoff stage of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women's NCAA Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gymnasium, home of the AAU Renegades, in lower Bucks County.

Though one-sided, the game was closer than the 92-41 win over Purple on July 19 as Lime Green rode to a regular-season 11-0 finish while Purple (4-7) won a tie-breaker with Ash Gray last Thursday to earn the final available playoff berth.

It was the third time this season Kuester has scored 26 or more points and overall there have been 41 individual performances of 20 or more points, including several multiples achieved. The list is down below in the data section.

Kuester, the daughter of NBA Los Angeles Lakers assistant John Kuester, a former 76ers aide and Pistons head coach, is headed for a graduate assistant position at Lehigh this winter, which under NCAA rules would render her ineligible to compete in the league next summer.

Allowed to compete under those same rules regarding summer competition are entire Division II and III squads but of the four D-II groups that played the past two months, none were left standing following Tuesday's competition. There were no DIII units, though there were DIII players from such educational institutions as Delaware Valley College and Haverford.

Kelly Green, which is the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia group, was knocked out on Thursday in the standings when the 12 teams were reduced to eight for the playoffs.

On Tuesday night, seventh-seeded Orange (Philadelphia University) fell to second-seeded Black 69-51, sixth-seeded Vegas Gold (West Chester) fell to third-seeded Hunter Green 63-49, and fourth-seeded Royal Blue (Holy Family) lost to fifth-seeded Cardinal Red, 63-52.

Though the last game is an upset by seed, the result in what was a competitive game was moot in terms of the underdog emerging with the win.

The two teams tied for fourth with 7-4 records, Royal Blue got the fourth seed on a head-to-head win but Cardinal Red lost one of the two games that were forfeits this summer and quite possibly had that not occurred the two would have played anyway with the seeds reversed.

So it's down to the semifinals Thursday night in a double-header on Court 1 beginning at 7 p..m. before next week's championship series Tuesday, Wednesday, and, if necessary, Thursday all at 7:30 p.m.

Lime Green will meet Cardinal Red at 7 p.m. following a regular-season 75-62 win over the same team on June 21, the second night of the summer schedule.

In the nightcap at 8:15 p.m. Black will meet Hunter Green after the two tied for second during the season at 9-2 and Black won the tiebreak off it head-to-head 85-57 win over Hunter Green on July 10.

The four survivors were the top four scoring teams on average during the regular season while Lime Green was the top defensive team and Cardinal Red was second, though some of that average was helped by the 2-0 forfeit loss to Kelly Green.

Quarterfinals Roundup

Recapping Tuesday's games first before looking ahead, following Kuester's performance for Lime Green, teammates Katelyn O'Reilly, a sophomore at Lehigh, and Elizabeth Sharlow, an incoming freshman at the same school, each scored nine points while Villanova senior Devon Kane scored eight points.

Class designations refer to players' status this coming fall-winter when they are at their respective universities and colleges.

Purple's Devin Shea, a senior at Ithaca College, scored 14 points, while 13 were collected by Addie Micir, a 2011 graduate and former Ivy League player of the year at Princeton, which has now won three straight league titles and earned a first-ever Associated Press poll ranking at the end of last season.

That citation was also the first-ever for any Ivy school in the 36-year history of the AP women's poll.

Trish Watson, a Penn State-Abington junior, was also in double digits for Purple with 12 points.

In Black's win over Orange, Kerry Kinek, a Central Catholic High graduate in Allentown, Pa., headed to Lehigh, scored 21 points, while Ashley Wood, a Kutztown senior and daughter of Team Black coach Keith Wood, scored 13 points, and recent Bethune-Cookman graduate Jasmine Elum scored 12 points.

Orange, which finished 5-6 during the season and lost the seed tiebreaker to Vegas Gold, got 14 points from Phila. U. sophomore Victoria Arnao, while Rams sophomore Najah Jacobs scored eight points.

It was another show by Saint Joseph's stars on Hunter in its win over Vegas Gold as senior Shelby Smith scored 18 points and incoming freshman Ciara Andrews scored 11 points.

Kendell Benovy, a sophomore at West Chester, had 10 points for Vegas Gold, while junior Brittany Powell scored nine points and incoming freshman Anna Kuntz scored eight points.

In the rematch of the fourth and fifth seeds, leading the way for Cardinal Red's revenge over Royal Blue was 2008 Temple graduate Ashley Morris, who scored 17 points, while Lafayette sophomore Emily Homan scored 13 points, Temple 2007 graduate Stephanie Hicks scored eight and 2007 Kent State graduate Lakia Stewart scored seven points, as did Lafayette freshman Annette Snow.

Meghan Gibson, a 2011 Holy Family graduate, scored 19 points, Tigers senior Ana Cruz had 17 and freshman Sarah Listenbee scored eight.
