The Guru’s Philly Summer League Report: It Will Be 1 Aquatic/Holy Family (10-0) vs. 2 BlackStar/Jefferson (9-1) For Bragging Rights Wednesday Night

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Following an eight-game schedule and three rounds of playoffs in the nine-team Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League that began June 16 in its new home at Plymouth Whitemarsh High, it comes down to 1-Aquatic/D2-Holy Family (10-0) vs. 2-BlackStar/D2-Jefferson (9-1) for all the marbles at 7 p.m. on Court 1 and streaming on YouTube on Ari Bluestein’s Sports Fan Based Network (SFBN).

The last two survivors were determined Tuesday, the first game seeing Aquatic maintain their dominance and perfect record with a 60-39 trouncing of 5-seed Electric Green (D3-Gwnyedd Mercy, which finished 5-5 counting playoff participation.
In the second game, the curse of the semifinals that has dogged BlackStar several times in recent seasons, being eliminated after coming into the game having been the top seed, almost struck again but this time Black Star squeaked through 43-41 over Purple Haze ( D2-West Chester), which finished at 6-4 in a low-scoring, foul-plagued contest with several lead changes and ending on a double technical.
No one reached the 20-point plateau kept all season for nightly impressive performances off scoring, the only stat kept in the books, but Bob’s detail on each game certainly makes defensive stands highlighted in the running play-by-play summaries.
The two teams are no strangers, being prominent rivals in the winter in the Southern Division and overall league competition in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
Jefferson winter coach Tom Shirley has over 900 wins and has coached the Rams to outstanding seasons, while Holy Family winter coach Bernadette Laukaitis has had the Tigers back to prominence since returning to her alma mater in Northeast Philadelphia, leaving her HF coach Mike McClaughlin, who’s staff she was on at Penn, joining him when he was hired by the Quakers from the program he had made nationally notable at the D2 level in the NCAA.
Last winter Holy Family advanced in the D2 NCAA national tournament as the East champion and in the meeting this summer almost a month ago on July 1 with Jefferson missing a few players, the Tigers won easily 68-50, which was the Rams’ only defeat.
Setting up the title game first, we’ll repeat Bob’s report of that meeting, the two rosters, and then his semifinals recap, and the season scoreboard review that now has all results and one game left to be played.
The Last Time They Met: Aquatic 68, BlackStar 50
It was raining three-point baskets on court one Wednesday night as Aquatic Blue (Holy Family University +) made 15 ‘threes’ and remained unbeaten, defeating BlackStar (Jefferson University +), 68-50 in the early game.
Amy Ngo sank four three pointers and finished with a team high 14 points. Ella Brown made two three pointers and had 11 points. Nine of the 11 Aquatic players who scored in the game made at least one three-point basket.
BlackStar, who was also undefeated heading into the contest was missing two of their better players for the game but placed three players in double figures led by Tori Nigro’s 12 points. Morgan Sconza (Georgian Court University) added 11 points while Caleigh Sperling chipped in ten.
Seven three-point baskets by seven different Aquatic players in the first quarter pushed their team to a 24-17 heading in the next quarter.
Blue opened that quarter with a 10-2 run to take a 34-19 lead with just over three minutes to go to the half.
Aquatic’s defense held BlackStar to just two field goals in the period as they took a 17-point lead into the halftime break, 38-21.
BlackStar went to the free throw line six times in the third quarter, making ten of 11 shots but only manage to shave one point off Aquatic’s lead and trailed by 16 points, 57-41 heading into the final period. Sperling was a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe in the period.
Both teams struggled to make baskets in the final quarter, with each team connecting on four shots from the field.
Three of the four Aquatic baskets, however, were three-point shots as Aquatic outscored BlackStar in the quarter 11-9 to take home the 18-point win.

Semifinals Recaps
#2 Blackstar 43 #3 Purple Haze 41
The semi final game between BlackStar (Jefferson University+) and Purple Haze (West Chester University +) was a low scoring, foul plagued contest that ended with a double technical foul as Blackstar outlasted Purple Haze 43-41 to advance to Wednesday night’s championship.
Purple’s Anna McTamney and Erin Daley were the only two players on either team to reach double figures, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Karissa Smedley (Georgian Court University) and Bella Bacani had eight points apiece to lead BlackStar.
A close game throughout got even closer in the fourth quarter as the lead changed hands six times in the period.
Cassidy Kruesi opened the quarter with a basket to give Black a 30-25 lead before Purple scored six straight points to take a 31-30 lead, their first since the start of the third quarter.
The lead changed hands three more times over the next four minutes before McTamney basket put Purple back on top 37-36 with 3:07 left in regulation.
Black’s Ana Pellechia followed with a three-point basket to start a 7-0 run as Black bolted to a 43-37 lead with 1:33 left.
Gabby Recinto, who had seen limited second half action after picking up four first half fouls, scored the final two points of the run.
Daley’s basket with 43 seconds left pulled Purple within four, 43-39.
Two quick fouls put Black on the free throw line, but a pair of misfires from the line opened the door and McTamney added a basket with 19 seconds left to close the gap to two 43-41.
A Black turnover gave Purple a chance to tie but Black’s defense held firm.
On Black’s final possession a double technical foul was called as the game ended.
Purple had held the lead for the entire first half, leading by as many as seven, 18-11, before Black closed out the second quarter on an 8-3 run to cut the gap to two 21-19 at halftime.
Bacani opened the third quarter with her second three-point basket of the game, giving Black their first lead of the contest 22-21.
Offense was hard to come by for either team with Black outscoring Purple 9-4 in the quarter to lead 28-25 heading into the action-packed final period with Black holding on for the win and a spot in the championship game.

Top seed Aquatic Blue (Holy Family University) pulled away late in the second quarter as nine of their ten players scored, cruising to a 60-39 win over Electric Green (Gwynedd Mercy University +) in the first game of the night.
Jessica Massey (Saginaw Valley State) and Amy Ngo led Aquatic with ten points apiece.
Avery Kocur had nine points while Ella Brown and Kara Meredith chipped in eight apiece.
Emma O’Hare (DeSales University) led Green with 11 points while Kailyn Bell and Keara McCaffrey (DeSales) chipped in eight points apiece.
Green jumped out to an early 12-10 lead after the first quarter before Aquatic outscored them 18-6 in the second quarter to lead 28-18 at halftime. Aquatic finished the quarter on an 8-0 run.
Ngo’s three-point basket early in the third quarter increased Aquatic’s lead to double digits 31-20.
A 13-5 run followed with five different Aquatic players scoring as the top seeded squad took a 44-25 lead as the quarter wound down.
Bell’s three-ball in the final seconds made the score 44-28 heading into the final quarter.
A basket from Kocur and a three-point bucket from Dani Brusha pushed Aquatic’s lead to 21 early in the quarter.
Lola Ibarrondo’s basket with about three minutes left gave Aquatic their biggest lead of the game at 55-33 before settling in for the 21-point win.
