PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Wednesday’s quarterfinals of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League are set at Plymouth Whitemarsh High following in a highly competitive play-in round Tuesday night as eighth-seed Sunburst, in winter known as Division 3 Ursinus, edged 9th-seed Royal Crown, also known as Division 3 Immaculata, 64-59.

Both teams were new to the league this year.

When the two met on the regular season eight-game schedule in the nine-team league on the second night of the season, on June 17, Sunburst had a narrow 49-45 victory, making it the tiebreak for the designated seed numbers since both teams finished 1-8.

The second time around on Tuesday there were many lead changes and ties before Sunburst emerged, led by Erin Glanz with 18 points, all but two off making four 3-pointers, and Delaney McCaffrey had 14 points with a pair of 3s and a perfect 2-for-2 on the line and Anna Chimento scored eight points.

Going 4-for-4 from the line with a pair of makes from deep, Royal’s Fiona Reckner had 19 points, while Lianna Adames had three from distance and a score from the line to for 10 points, a total matched by teammate Liliana Metrick, who had a pair of threes, while Abby Grillo scored eight points.

Winning sends Sunburst, whose two wins on the summer were over Royal both in the regular season and Tuesday, into Wednesday’s quarterfinal opener at 6:30 p.m., on Court 1, against unbeaten and top-seed Aquatic (D2-Holy Family), which in their regular season meeting on June 30 had an easy time winning 75-44.

In that game, as Bob Heller, who is out West until next week, reported, Aquatic’s Kara Meredith had 24 points, while Ella Brown and Amy Ngo each scored 13 and 12 points. Sunburst’s Delaney McCaffrey was the lone player on the squad in double figures, scoring 15 points.

In the second half, after Sunburst had stayed close midway to thru the second quarter, Aquatic used a 14-6 run in the third period to build a dominating lead while in the fourth the winners held the opposition to one field goal taking the period 17-3.
