The Guru’s Philly Summer League Report: Tuesday Semis Offer Battles Between 1-Aquatic/Holy Family vs. 5-Electric Green/Gwynedd Mercy and 2-BlackStar/Jefferson vs. 3-Purple Haze/West Chester

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. — Will it be a 1 vs. 2 final Wednesday night between a potential unbeaten Aquatic/Holy Family team and BlackStar/Jefferson, losing only to their winter rival in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League?

Or will the leader in the 15-team league fall short, suffering an upset from five-seed Electric Green/D3-Gwynedd-Mercy, which staged a rally from an 18-point deficit to Electric Pink/D2-Goldey-Beacon and D3-Scranton.

Or will BlackStar, the way it’s happened in recent seasons in the playoffs, fall short this time with three-seed Purple Hazee/D2-West Chester doing the damage?

The answers in the finals come in the semifinals Tuesday night all on Court 1 when the defending champs, who advanced in the NCAA D3-national tournament as the East champs, tip off first at 6:30 p.m. at Plymouth Whitemarsh High followed by the BlackStar/Jefferson game at 7:45 p.m.

Wednesday’s title game on Court 1 tips off at 7 p.m. and again will air on Ari Bluestein’s Sports Fan Based Network on YouTube.

In the regular season meetings on July 14 the top seed won in a 75-42 rout while on June 30 BlackStar also won comfortably 83-68.

In the details of both games, one played when Bob was out West, a trip from which he just returned in time to be home for his Monday birthday, recapping the postgame reports:

BlackStar 83 Purple Haze 68

BlackStar (Jefferson University +) used a dominant fourth quarter to pull away from Purple Haze (West Chester University +)  and remain undefeated on the season with an 83-68 win.

Emily Spratt led all scorers with 21 points. 

The Georgian Court University duo of Morgan Sconza and Karissa Smedley added 13 and 10 points respectively to round out Blackstar’s double figure scorers.

Purple Haze was led by Anna McTamney and Daniella MacDonald (Wheaton University) who scored 12 points apiece. Lena Stein added 11 points.

The first two quarter saw a total of seven lead changes as Black held a three-point lead 24-21 after one quarter and Purple came back to lead by the slimmest of margins, one point 43-42 at halftime.

Purple opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run to lead 52-44 before Sconza broke the run with a three-point basket.

The basket sparked seven straight Black points to pull within one 52-51 with Black extending the scoring run to 15-5 by the end of the period to lead 59-57 heading into the final quarter.

Black opened the final quarter with a 14-4 run to lead 73-61 with six minutes to go.

The undefeated BlackStar team outscored Purple Haze 24-11 in the final period with Spratt and Cassidy Kravesi (nine points) scoring six points apiece in the period as Blackstar earned their fourth win of the season to remain in first place heading into the next game which was against Aquatic.

In the Aquatic win, Ella Brown scored 15 points, Amy Ngo had 14 helped by connecting with a trio of 3-pointers, Brooke Evans did likewise on the way to 13 points and seven others also made the scoring column.

Electric Green got 12 points from Layla Verbit, with a perfect 4-for-4 on the line, while Brianna McFadden had 10 points and six others also scored.
