The Guru’s Philly Summer League Report: Electric PinkMoves into 3rd Beating Jade while Electric Green Gains First Win Via Forfeit

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. -What was a week of temporary winnowing got even thinner Wednesday night with the remaining two games following two on Tuesday reduced to one in reality in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League at its new home of Plymouth Whitemarsh High in Montgomery County.

What happened for just this week in the nine-team league was a conflict for use in the gym that houses two courts, allowing two nightly doubleheaders.

So, in the rear gym Tuesday just one game was played early and one late with two more scheduled Wednesday and Aquatic (D2-Holy Family) serving the bye.

However, as it occurs across the eight-game schedule at times, Purple Haze (D2-West Chester) was unable to field enough players for the opener due to other commitments so as the rule goes, Electric Green (D3-Gwynedd Mercy) backed into a 2-0 benefit forfeit for its first win in two games, having already served its bye.

In the second game, Electric Pink (D2-Goldey-Beacom/D3-Scranton) easily won 72-49 over Jade (D3-Arcadia) and jumped into third place in the early season phase at 2-1 behind idle BlackStar/D2-Jefferson) (3-0) and Aquatic (2-0).

The one game did produce another 20-point performance of exactly 20 from Jade’s Abby Arnold, an incoming junior at Arcadia returning this fall out of Methacton High.

Behind Electric Pink, Sunburst (D3-Ursinus) and Electric Green are 1-1, followed by Jade and Purple Haze at 1-2, then Citrine Orange (Ursinus alums and Rowan undergrads) at 1-2 and Royal Crown (D3-Immaculata) looking for its first win at 0-3.

Looking ahead to Tuesday when everything goes back to normal the rest of the way, the early games have Electric Green (1-1) and Jade (1-2) playing at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1 while at the same time on Court 2 Royal Crown (0-3) and Citrine Orange (1-2) meet.

The 7:45 p.m. nightcaps have BlackStar (3-0) and Purple Haze (1-2) facing each other on Court 1 while Aquatic (2-0) and Sunburst (1-1) meeting on Court 2.

Electric Green 2, Purple Haze 0, forfeit

As noted above, Electric Green got its first win by default, the beneficiary of a 2-0 forfeit when Purple Haze was unable to field enough players.

Electric Pink 72 Jade 49

Four players scored in double figures as Electric Pink (Goldey-Beacom/Scranton +) defeated Jade (Arcadia University +) 72-49 in the late game Wednesday night.

Marissa Francione (Scranton) led Pink with 15 points while Scranton teammate Maura Gilroy added 13.

The two Scranton players each made three three-point baskets on the night.  Za’mylah Seda Owens (Goldey-Beacom) and Sylvie Harrington (Gettysburg) chipped in ten points apiece.

Jade’s Abby Arnold led all scorers with 20 points, while making six three-point baskets.  Taylor Koenig added ten points while Delaney Finn scored nine (three three-point baskets).

The first 15 minutes of action saw seven lead changes with Pink holding a slim 20-18 lead with 5:20 left in the second quarter.

Pink then ran off ten straight points to close out a 13-0 run to take a 30-18 lead.

Arnold’s three-ball with 1:50 left in the period broke the run.

Finn followed with her second three-point basket of the game to cut the deficit to six 30-24 before Pink scored the final five points of the quarter to lead 35-24 at halftime.

Gilroy opened the third quarter with a three-point basket to increase her team’s lead to 38-24.

A 10-3 run by Jade, fueled by Finn and Arnold cut the deficit in half 41-34 with just under four minutes left in the quarter before Pink pushed the lead back to 11 at 47-36 heading into the final ten minutes of action.

Arnold’s fifth three-ball of the game pulled Jade within nine, 50-41with just three minutes into the fourth quarter.

Pink, however, exploded with a 15-4 run, capped by a three-point basket from Diami Diallo (Goldey-Beacom) to lead by 20, 65-45 with just 2:34 left.

Pink outscored Jade 7-2 in the final two minutes to make the final margin 23 points,72-49.
