The Guru’s Philly Summer League Report: Starts of 2-0 Propel Aquatic/Holy Family and BlackStar/Jefferson to Standings Leaders

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – In a quirk of night two Wednesday in the completion of the first week of this season’s Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League at its new home of Plymouth Whitemarsh High, the four unbeatens from opening night met each other and BlackStar (D2-Jefferson) and Aquatic (D2-Holy Family) quickly went to the top of the standings.

The duo are two of the winter powers in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

Sunburst (D3-Ursinus), which served the first of the nightly byes in the nine-team league on Tuesday, made its debut winning narrowly in the closest game of the night 49-45 over Royal Crown (D3-Immaculata), which has dropped its first two.

BlackStar won 80-47 over Electric Pink (Goldey-Beacom), which fell to 1-1 and to clear a record from the first report of the summer is not new this season having played recently.

Aquatic won 55-33 over Purple/D2 West Chester (1-1).

Jade (D3-Arcadia) won big 92-60 over Citrine Orange (0-2) to be the third unbeaten in the group, beating the opposition alums of D3 Rowan and Ursinus.

Electric Green (D3-Gwynedd Mercy) had the bye for the evening.

Thus, the early standings have Aquatic and BlackStar at the top followed by Sunburst a half game behind and then a 1-1 three-way tie among Electric Pink, Purple and Jade.

Then comes Electric Green with the one loss and Cintrine Orange and Royal Crown.

Three players hit the 20+ performances of the night listings with Jade’s Taylor Koenig hitting five from deep and scoring 36 points, one of the highest efforts in league history, while teammate Jocelyn Goldstein scored 24.

BlackStar’s Gabrielle Recinto scored 20 in the win over Electric Pink.

Next week due to a conflict on the front gym, each team, except Aquatic with the bye, will play one game, the schedule split over Tuesday and Wednesday in the rear gym near the pool.

On Tuesday, Citrine Orange plays Sunburst at 6:30 p.m. followed by BlackStar meeting Royal Crown at 7:45 p.m.

On Wednesday, Electric Green plays Purple Haze at 6:30 p.m., followed by Electric Pink and Jade at 7:45 p.m.

Things then return to normal the rest of the way and this year due to the way the calendar falls there is no idle week for the July 4th Holiday.

Incidentally, the seed tracker is now added at the bottom of the post but teams will be listed alphabetically until standings solidify in a few weeks if not sooner to employ the real tie-breakers when needed.

Recaps

Aquatic Blue 55, Purple Haze 33

A 17-0 run to open the third quarter broke a 17-17 halftime tie as Aquatic Blue (Holy Family University +) won their second game of the season with a 55-33 win over Purple Haze (West Chester University +) in the Court 2 early game at the Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School gymnasium.

Ella Brown led blue with 15 points while Kara Meredith added 14. Lola Ibarrondo chipped in ten points. Sa’ni Savage (Chowan University) led purple with nine points.

Meredith scored the first five points of the third quarter as Brown followed with by scoring eight of Blue’s next ten points. Brooke Evans (Stevens Tech) added a basket with 4:35 left in the third quarter to give Blue a 34-17 lead.

Purple’s Erin Daley sank a jumper with 4:17 left to break the run. Blue went on to outscore Purple 24-5 in the quarter to lead 41-22 heading into the final ten minutes of action.

Blue continued their double-digit lead in the final period and increased the margin to 22 by in the final minute of play. Meredith scored nine of Blue’s 14 points in the period to help seal the win.

BlackStar 80, Electric Pink 47

Three players reached double figures and a total of nine different players scored as Blackstar (Jefferson University+) won their second game of the season, defeating a shorthanded Electric Pink squad (Goldey-Beacom College/Univ. of Scranton+) 80-47 in the Court One early game Wednesday evening.

Gabby Recinto led all players with 20 points while Emily Spratt and Ana Pellecchia contributed 15 and 12 points respectively to pace Blackstar.

Pink, who had only six players suited for the game, was led by Bridget Archbold’s (Catholic University) with 16 points (four three-point baskets). Bridget Malloy (Scranton) added 13 while Bailey Balkir (Gettysburg) chipped in nine.

Spratt scored the first eight points of the game and Recinto added seven in the first quarter as the two upper class players combined for 15 of BlackStar’s 18 points, jumping out to an 18-11 lead.

BlackStar closed out the quarter on a 10-4 run to take control of the contest.

The winners outscored Pink 23-8 in the second quarter with Pellecchia leading the way with eight points as they took a 41-21 lead by halftime.

The lead jumped to as many as 27 in the third quarter with the score settling a 58-35 when the buzzer sounded for the period.

Both teams scored 22 points apiece in the final period as BlackStar closed out the game with the 80-47 win, their second win by 20 or more points in as many nights.

Sunburst 49  Royal Crown 45

In what was the closest game of the night, Sunburst (Ursinus College) used a 10-0 third quarter run to overcome a single-digit Royal Crown (Immaculata University+) lead and hung on to earn a 49-45 win in the late game on court 2, handing Royal their second loss in as many nights.

 Sunburst was playing their first game of the season having drawn the opening night bye.

Ruth O’Keeffe led a balanced Sunburst offense with 12 points while Erin Glanz added seven points.

Ten different Sunburst players scored. Royal got 17 points from Liliana Metrick (Widener University) and 11 points from Sofia Kourisdakis.

Trailing by two 33-31 with 6:35 left in the third period, O’Keefe tied the score at 33-33 then Glanz followed with a three-point basket to put Sunburst on top 36-33.

Anna Chimento added a basket and Emerson Gunther (Salisbury University) sank a three-pointer to cap the run and give Sunburst a 41-33 lead.

 Kouridakis sank a three-ball in the final seconds of the period to cut the Sunburst lead to 41-36 heading into the final quarter.

The lead oscillated between three and five points before Bridget Grant’s three pointer gave Sunburst a 46-40 lead with 3:38 left.

Five straight Royal points (all from Metrick) pulled the team within one at 46-45 with 2:23 left in regulation.

Neither team scored over the next two minutes when Royal put Sunburst on the line to keep them from running out the clock. Reyanna Jamison missed the second of two free throws with 16 seconds left but Delaney McCaffrey snagged the offensive rebound, was fouled, and added another point with a 1-for-2 effort at the charity stripe with 11 seconds left. Jamison made one more free throw with two seconds left to seal the four-point win.

Jade 92, Citrine Orange 60

Team Jade (Arcadia University+) dominated wire-to-wire as they cruised to a 32-point win, 92-60 over Citrine Orange (Ursinus/Rowan alumni) in the court one late game.

Jade got 36 points (five three-point baskets) from Taylor Koenig while Jocelyn Goldstein (Johns Hopkins) added 24. Patricia Monroe (Lancaster Bible) added 12 points.

Lily Bross (Rowan) led Orange with 19 points while Grace McShane (Rowan) and Natalie Mehl (Ursinus) chipped in 12 points apiece.

Koenig and Goldstein combined for 25 of Jade’s 29 first quarter points as they took a 29-13 lead after the opening period.

A quiet second quarter was had by both teams as Jade slowly added to their lead, pulling ahead 44-25 by halftime.

Koenig had a big third quarter, scoring 15 of her team’s 29 points in the period as they extended the lead to 73-39 heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Orange outscored Jade in the period 21-19. McShane, Mehl and Bross combined to score 18 of their team’s 21 fourth quarter points.
