The Guru’s Philly Summer League Report: Those D2-CACC Rivals 1-Seed Black (Jefferson 8-0) and 2-Seed Sky (Holy Family 6-2) Advance to Championship

HATBORO, Pa. – The major rivals last winter in the Division II Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) have made it all the way through past Thursday night’s semifinals to next Tuesday’s championship of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

It’s the same seed numbers they held in last winter’s tournament after 1-seed Black (Jefferson) this summer stayed perfect finishing 8-0 in the standings and blitzing 6-seed Lemon Gold 59-36 in Game 1 followed by 2-seed Sky (Holy Family) fending off 4-seed Purple (D2-West Chester) 60-51 after a 6-2 finish.

There’s a chance for revenge or maybe the same outcome will occur as in the CACC championship when Bernadette Laukaitis’ Holy Family squad upset Tom Shirley’s Jefferson group.

Black has had a similar unbeaten run in the past but fallen short when playoff time arrived.

In their July 17 meeting Black won 67-60 over Sky.

The league leaders got a break heading into the semifinals because in the quarterfinals Lemon Gold (D2-Kutztown) upset three-time defending champion Cyber Pink, an alumni group from the former University of Sciences of Philadelphia, which closed business several seasons ago merging with Division I Saint Joseph’s.

In the win by Black, Emily Spratt, who twice earlier made the nightly performance 20+ honor roll, turned in the season’s top performance scoring 29 points.

#2 Sky 60 #4 Purple 51

Second seed Team Sky (Holy Family University) held off a second half comeback attempt from Team Purple (West Chester University +) as they advanced to the Philadelphia/Suburban women’s Basketball League Championship game with a 60-51 victory.

Sky will face top seed Team Black (Jefferson University) next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. on court 1 at Kelly Bolish Gym.

Three players reached double figures for Sky led by Amy Ngo’s (HFU ’28) 16 points. Taylor Hinkle (HFU ’26) and Dani Brusha (HFU ’29) chipped in 12 points apiece.

Sabria Mann (Chestnut Hill’29) led Purple, which was 4-4, with 14 points while Sa’ni Savage (Chowan University ’27) added 13. Raynah Rattliff (Wilmington University ’29) joined Mann and Savage in double figures with ten points.

Sky jumped out to a huge 36-16 lead by halftime, led by Hinkle’s eight points and Ngo’s seven. The winners broke a 4-4 tie in the first quarter with a 17-2 explosion to lead 21-6 and then outscored Purple 15-10 in the second quarter.

Purple opened the third quarter with a 10-1 spurt highlighted by three-point baskets from Brianna Seltzer(West Chester ’23), and Savage, cutting the lead to 11, 37-26.

After a pair of free throws by Carolyn Prevost (HFU ’24) to boost Sky’s lead back up to 13, Purple began to chip away at the lead as the quarter wore on, stepping of the defense and forcing shots, pulling within eight, 45-37 heading into the final period.

Aaliyah Solliday (West Chester ’29) opened the fourth quarter with a three-point basket from the right corner to pull Purple within five 45-40.

Sky followed with seven straight points to again take a double-digit lead, 52-40.

Two free throws from Savage with 6:31 left cut Sky’s lead to single digits again.

Sky, however, had enough left in their offense to hold off the surging Purple squad, not letting them get any closer than seven the rest of the way as they hung on for the ten-point win.

#1 Black 59 #6 Lemon Gold 36

Team Black (Jefferson University) exploded in the fourth quarter to shift momentum away from sixth-seed Lemon Gold (Kutztown University +) and advance to Tuesday’s championship game with a 59-36 win.

The championship game next Tuesday will feature the league’s top two teams from the regular season, undefeated and top seed Black and second-seed Team Sky.

Black was led by Emily Spratt’s (Jefferson ’27) 29 points, including 12 in Black’s explosive fourth quarter run.

Alexa Windish (Kutztown ’28) and Liliana Metrick (Widener ’29) led Lemon Gold with ten points apiece. Fiona Reckner (Franklin & Marshall ’29) scored nine points.

A 14-3 run by Black broke an early 4-4 tie as Black jumped to an 18-7 lead after one quarter and a 36-16 lead by halftime.

Black increased their lead to 21 at 43-22 with 4:46 left in the third quarter when Lemon Gold exploded with a 14-2 uprising to cut the lead to single digits.

 Reckner’s basket started the run and Windish followed with a field goal of her own.

After a basket from Spratt, Lemon Gold scored the next ten points, highlighted by two three-point baskets from Metrick followed by another basket from Windish to make the score 45-36 heading into the final period.

Spratt scored 12 of Black’s 14 fourth-quarter points as they pulled away for the twenty-three-point win.
