The Guru’s Philly Summer League Report: Black (D2-Jefferson) Cruises Over Royal (D2-Goldey Beacom)to Head to the Playoffs Unbeaten at 8-0
By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru
HATBORO, Pa. — Team Black, the unit from D2-Jefferson University, completed a perfect regular season run at 8-0 Thursday night beating Royal 78-48 Thursday night at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, to set up a quick rematch with the D2-Goldey-Beacom unit in a 1-8 quarterfinal opener Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1.
Off the standings as they existed and then were completed, only one flip of positions occurred to set up the playoff pairings.
Purple (D2-West Chester) grabbed an easy 72-45 win over Maroon (D3-Arcadia) while two-seed Sky (D2-Holy Family) had little difficulty likewise winning 58-42 over Kelly (D2 East Stroudsburg) enabling Purple (4-4) to take the four-seed and meet five-seed Kelly (3-5) at 7:45 p.m. on Court 2.
Sky (6-2) will meet 7-seed Maroon (D3 Arcadia), at 7:45 p.m. on Court 1.
The Alums from former University of Sciences Philadelphia, who compete as Cyber Pink (5-3) in the three slot will meet 6-seed Lemon Gold (2-6) at 6:30 p.m. on Court 2.
Ironically, the two were to meet Thursday but Lemon Gold (D2-Kutztown) took a 2-0 forfeit for lack of players.
Black’s Caleigh Sperling, one of the high scorers across the two months of action, was the sole player to reach the 20+ points performance again to help Black gain a perfect navigation of the schedule.
However, as seen in the past, games are not necessarily all safe bets for playoff outcomes as Black can testify, having entered several seasons ago as the top seed with a perfect record only to fall short of the championship round being upset in the semifinals by Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), Southern Division, rival Chestnut Hill, which the following winter had one of its best runs in CACC history.
There was one tie at the finish which held from Tuesday with Maroon and Lemon Gold both 2-6 at sixth. The two split their two games, each team played one other team twice so the eight teams could have eight games, but Lemon Gold had a better win topping Kelly.
The semifinals will be played on Thursday, July 31 on Court 1 at 6:30 p.m. with the championship the following Tuesday, August 5, at 7 p.m. and streaming for the third straight season on Ari Bluestein’s Sports Fan Based Network (SFBN).
Now here’s Bob’s recaps of the three games played and the data.

An 11-3 run by Purple to open the second quarter increased their lead to 35-14, later increasing the lead to 23, at 42-19 following Jordan Tate’s two free throws.
Purple settled in for a 44-24 halftime lead.
Three-point baskets from Rhoades and Bell fueled an 8-2 run to open the third quarter, cutting Purple’s lead to 46-32 at just 4:05 into the third period.
Purple then blew the game wide open with a 16-2 uprising to take a 62-34 advantage before Abby Arnold sank a three-point basket to close out the period with the score 62-37.
Purple used an 8-3 run to increase their lead to thirty 70-40.
Maroon closed the game out with a 5-2 effort to make the final score 72-45.
Black 78 Royal 48
Team Black (Jefferson University) jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 78-48 win over Team Royal (Goldey-Beacom College+) to complete an undefeated regular season.
Black finished the regular season with an 8-0 record and will hold the #1 seed when the league playoffs open next week.
Royal finished with a 1-7 mark and the eighth seed. The two teams will meet again in the quarterfinals next Tuesday.
Four players reached double figures for Black, led by Caleigh sperling’s 26 points. Gabby Racinto added 13 while Ana Pellecchia and Tori Nigro chipped in 12 apiece.
Katherine Lange (Goldey-Beacom ’29) led Royal with 12 points while Reagan Chrencik (Gettysburg ’27) chipped in ten.
Black jumped out to an 11-2 lead and following a Chrencik three pointer that cut the lead to 11-6, Black closed out the quarter with a 10-2 spurt to lead 21-8 after one period.
A Sperling three-point basket late in the second quarter increased Black’s lead to 36-11.
Royal scored the final eight points of the quarter with a Lange three-ball, two baskets from Janie Cross (Goldey-Beacom ’28) and a free throw from Jocelyn Goldstein (Johns Hopkins’29) to cut the lead to 36-19 at the half.
A 10-2 run from Black opened the third quarter and increased their lead to 46-21 and kept going to widen the advantage to 54-28 heading into the final period.
Royal would get no closer than 23 points in the final period as Black extended the lead to as high as 33 before Talia Battavio’s (Goldey-Beacom ’29) three-point bucket made the final score 78-48.
