The Guru’s Philly Summer League Report: Unbeaten Black (D-2 Jefferson) Tops Sky (D2-Holy Family) to Clinch Top Seed and Tie for First

Guru Note: Revised to reflect that with a big lead and two minutes left in one of the suspended opening night games Maroon was declared the winner.

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, PA -Staying unbeaten (6-0) and winning the battle of the 1-2 teams Thursday night in the standings of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, Black (D2-Jefferson) through it’s 67-60 win over Sky (D2-Holy Family) clinched a tie for the regular season title and top seed in the playoffs, which begin a week from Tuesday.

Cyber Pink (D-2 USP Alumni) topped Maroon (D3-Arcadia) 85-59 to climb into a second-place deadlock with Sky, which, when snapped, also for the moment gets the second seed through its earlier win over Sky, which is third.

Kelly (D2-East Stroudsburg+) pulled a 66-58 upset of Purple (D2-West Chester), which is still alone in fourth place at 3-3.

In a rarity, not enough players showed up on either side for the match between Royal Blue (D2-Golden Beacon) and Lemon Gold (D2-Kutztown) so for the moment a no-game was ruled, which caused a perfect seed order if the standings were final.

Kelly (2-4) and Lemon Gold (2-4) are now tied for fifth with Lemon Gold by virtue of its win over Kelly in the fifth seed slot.

Maroon (2-5) by its declared win of the suspended game moves to seventh followed by Royal Blue (1-4).

Looking Ahead

Next Tuesday and Thursday are the catchup games that were either suspended or postponed last month on opening week because of floor editions affected by the weather.

After Tuesday’s games other than Black, which is separated by two games from the rest of the standings teams, the blog will look over the gridlock to note what’s necessary to get the best seed possible.

Sky (4-2) meets Purple (3-3) at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1 with second place on the line, the game at the moment having been suspended at the half with Sky in front 33-32.

Cyber Pink (4-2) meets first-place Black on Court 1 at 7:45 p.m.

Maroon (2-5) no longer meets Lemon Gold (2-4), Maroon declared the winner by virtue of a 56-47 lead with 2:02 left when the game was halted.

Kelly (2-4) plays Royal (1-4) on Court 2 at 7:45 p.m.

Performers

Taylor Hamm, one of the USP alums on Cyber Pink, had the summer’s best performance scoring 28 points, one better than Black’s Caleigh Sperling.

Her Cyber Pink teammate Rylee Derr scored 21 in the win over Maroon.

Emily Chmiel on Kelly had 22 points in the win over Purple, while Black’s Emily Spratt scored 24 points beating Sky Blue.

Now, here’s Bob with the game details.

Recaps
Black 67 Sky 60

Team Black (Jefferson University) remained undefeated, rallying from a five-point fourth quarter deficit to defeat second place Team Sky (Holy Family University) 67-60 in the late game on Court 1.

Black improves to 6-0 and remains in sole possession of first place.  Sky falls to 4-2 and falls into a tie for second place with Cyber Pink who on earlier in the evening beat Maroon.

Emily Spratt scored 20 of her game high 24 points in the second half to pace Black. Caleigh Sperling added 19 points while Kaci Mikulski chipped in 12.

Amy Ngo led Sky 15 points and was joined by Taylor Hinkle and Claire Dougherty who added 14 and ten points respectively.

Sky held a 35-30 lead midway through the third quarter when Black started chipping away.

Spratt scored her team’s final nine points of the period as Black closed within two 43-41 heading into the final period.

Sky’s Ella Brown put her team back up by five 50-45 just two minutes into the final period.

Black followed with an 11-2 run to retake the lead 56-52 with 5:17 left.

Ngo’s free throws pulled Sky within two 56-54 but Black put together an 8-2 run with Spratt scoring the final four points to lead by eight 64-46 with 46 seconds left before settling in for the seven-point win.

Black had controlled the tempo early in the game until Sky took their first lead as the buzzer sounded ending the first quarter as Hinkle nailed a three-point basket.

Black retook the lead on a Sperling basket in the second quarter but found themselves trailing 25-21 at halftime.

Kelly 66 Purple 58

Team Kelly (East Stroudsburg University+) opened a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they handed Purple (West Chester University+) a 66-58 loss to earn their second win of the summer league.

Kelly is now 2-4 on the season and falls to the sixth seed off a tie and Purple falls to 3-3 and holds sole possession of fourth place.

Recent ESU grad Emily Chmiel led all scorers with 22 points. Kaitlyn McGeary and Avery White added 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Alainna Hopta led Purple with 12 points while Alli Kamulda (Chestnut Hill ’29) added 11 points.

White opened the scoring for Kelly with a three-point basket and her team quickly jumped out to a 7-1 lead.

Ahead by seven 15-8 Kelly closed out the quarter with an 8-2 spurt to lead by double digits 23-10.

Kelly increased their lead to 16 at 33-17 before Purple rallied to pull within eight by halftime 36-28 with an 11-3 run. Hopta sank two three-point baskets in the run.

A traditional three-point play by Purple’s Sa’ni Savage (Chowan) closed the gap to seven 40-33.

Kelly then outscored Purple 15-6 as the quarter progressed to lead 55-39 heading into the final ten minutes of action.

A basket from White opened the fourth quarter and gave Kelly their biggest lead at 57-39. Purple again pushed back going on a 12-2 uprising to cut the Kelly lead to 59-51 but would get no closer than seven the rest of the way as Chmiel scored twice in the final minute to seal the 66-58 win.

Cyber Pink 85 Maroon 59

Cyber Pink (Alumni team+) used a 51-point second half to pull away from Maroon (Arcadia University) to earn an 85-59 win.

Pink improves to 4-2 on the season and moves into a tie for second place with an upcoming game next Tuesday against first place Black. Maroon falls to 2-5 with the loss.

Both teams placed five players in double figures with Pink’s Taylor Hamm (USciences ’22) leading all players with a season high 28 points.

Hamm was supported by Rylee Derr’s (Kutztown ’21) 21 points and 13 points apiece from Leah Johnson (West Chester ‘24) and Delaney McCaffrey (Ursinus ’28).

Holly Gohl (Millersville’ 28) added ten points.

Kara Quigley (Scranton’25) led Maroon with 13 points.  Lizzie Halligan (Scranton’28) added 12 points. Hanna Rhoades and Taylor Koenig had 11 points apiece while Delaney Finn chipped in ten.

Finn opened the scoring for Maroon with a three-point basket for the early lead.

Pink later tied the game at 4-4 before Maroon countered with a 13-4 run to lead 17-8 before settling in for a 19-12 lead after one quarter.

Pink opened the second quarter with an 11-3 run to take the leads back at 23-22 and then extended the run to 18-3 with seven straight points to lead 30-22.

Koenig broke the run with a three-ball with just under three minutes left to pull her team within five.

Pink scored four of the final six points in the quarter to lead 34-27 at halftime.

The group expanded the lead in third quarter with an 18-9 run after Maroon cut the lead to five 39-34.

Gohl and Derr had six points apiece in the quarter while Hamm added five as they opened a 57-43 lead heading into the final period.

Koenig’s three-pointer just three minutes into the final quarter narrowed Pink’s lead to ten 62-52.

Pink then scored 15 straight points to put the game out of reach 77-52 before settling in for the 85-59 win.
