The Guru’s Philly Summer League Report: Black (D2-Jefferson) Stays Unbeaten at 4-0; Purple (D2-West Chester) Narrow Win Over Cyber Pink (USP Alums) Creates 2nd Place Tie With Sky (D2-Holy Family)

HATBORO, Pa. – The key matchup Thursday night in the Philadelphia/Suburban women’s summer basketball league at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, saw the Purple (D2-West Chester) group edge Cyber Pink (D2-USP Alums) 61-57 to move into a second-place tie at 3-1 with Sky (D2-Holy Family), which cruised to a 67-47 win over Lemon Gold (D2-Kutztown).

The Cyber Pink loss dropped the Alums alone in fourth at 2-2.

Black (D2-Jefferson) remained in first a game in front and unbeaten at 4-0 in the eight-team league after an 87-44 rout of Kelly (D2-East Stroudsburg), which became part of a four-way tie three games back at the bottom at 1-3 with Lemon Gold, and as a result of a win, Maroon (D3-Arcadia) winning 75-46 over Royal (D2-Goldey Beacom) put both those teams in the lower gridlock.

Maroon was the last team to gain a triumph as the schedule hit the halfway mark meaning no one will be winless this summer.

Looking Ahead

Off the standings when action resumes Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. on Court 1 Purple (3-1) will get a chance to move into a tie at the top by beating Black (4-0).

The two openers at 6:30 p.m. have Lemon Gold (1-3) meet Kelly (1-3) on Court 1while Sky (3-1) meets Maroon (1-3) on Court 2.

The other nightcap at 7:45 p.m. being played on Court 2 has Cyber Pink (2-2) meeting Royal (1-3).

High Scoring Performances

Five players reached 20 or more points and for the third time in three nights the top score was also the season best – Black’s Caleigh Sperling exploding for 27 points.

Hanna Rhoades scored 23 in Maroon’s victory.

Three others each scored 20 – two in the same game as Sa’ni Savage led Purple while Taylor Hamm scored for the losing Cyber Pink. Claire Dougherty did the deed for the winning Sky bunch.

Sowing the Playoff Seeds

It so turned out the standings in this edition so worked out that the 1-8 alignment is how the teams would stack up if the playoffs began right now.

Unbeaten Black is alone in first at 4-0, Sky (3-1) and Purple (3-1) are tied for second but Sky’s win over Purple earns the second seed. Cyber Pink (2-2) is alone in fourth.

As far as the four-way tie for fifth goes in their games against each other Lemon Gold is fifth at 1-0 having beaten Maroon; Kelly and Royal are both 1-1 but in their head-to-head meeting, Royal’s forfeit win over Kelly Tuesday lines them up in sixth place and seventh respectfully while Maroon’s 1-2 in the mini comparisons ships them to eighth.

Purple 61, Cyber Pink 57

A game that could have gone either way Purple’s Sa’ni Savage scored 20, as mentioned while Aaliyah Solliday fired three from deep and finished with 17 points.

Cyber Pink’s Taylor Hamm matched Purple’s Savage with 20, while Rylee Derr scored 14 and Delaney McCaffrey scored 10.

Black 87, Kelly 44

Caleigh Sperling for the winners had a season best 27 for the league, including 3-3from the line; Tori Nigro was also perfect from the line (4-4) on the way to 18 points, while Kaci Mikulski scored 14 points, and Gabby Recinto scored 10.

Kelly’s Emily Chmiel scored 12, Avery White had 11 points, and Keara McCaffrey scored 8 points.

Maroon 75, Royal 46

Hanna Rhoades, who has been hot all season, finally had her play lead to a win, scoring 23 points with five shots made from deep to lead Maroon’s triumph, while Lizzie Halligan and Delaney Bell each scored 18 points.

Royal’s Talia Battavio had a pair of 3-pointers and 12 points, while Katherine Lang and Eva Wallker each scored 12, and Janie Cross scored 10 points.

Sky 67, Lemon Gold 47

 As mentioned earlier, Claire Dougherty scored 20 in Sky’s rout, Ella Brown scored 14, Maya Hill scored 9, while Dani Brusha and Amy Ngo each scored eight.

Lemon Gold got three 3-pointers and 12 points overall from Fiona Reckner, while Lily Bross scored 10, and Liliana Metrick scored eight.
