The Guru’s Philly Summer League Report: Unbeaten Black (D2-Jefferson) Takes Sole Possession of First One Game Up on a Three-Way Tie at Second

HATBORO, Pa. – Give Commissioner Deuce credit as a handicapping man of vision.

On the original schedule of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball League here at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, to get everyone an eighth game, Tuesday night was supposed to be a repeat of last month’s opening night that ended up getting delayed as did night two due to weather affecting the floor.

He matched teams against each other likely to be of the same caliber and after action resumed Tuesday following the week off for the July 4th holiday, the outcomes were closer in more games than in the first two nights before the break.

The actual night of postponement that included two suspended games will be played Tuesday, July 22, while the postponed night of June 19 will be played Thursday July 24 and then the playoffs of quarterfinals, semifinals, and championships – the revised schedule below is updated – will start Tuesday, July 29.

Weather Tuesday still had one affect because the downpour that occurred on the front end of the night made Kelly, the D2 East Stroudsburg+ squad, unable to field enough players, even after allowing an extended grace period, and so had to forfeit 2-0 to Royal, the D2 Goldey-Beacom squad, making both teams 1-2.

 Of the three games played, Black, the D2-Jefferson group has risen to a place of familiarity, all alone in first place and the last unbeaten group at 3-0 following an exciting 54-48 win over Cyber Pink (2-1), the predominate alums group from the former University of Sciences of Philadelphia that merged into D-1 Saint Joseph’s several years ago.

In another thriller, Sky (2-1), the D2- Holy Family team, claimed a narrow 60-56 win over Purple (2-1), the D2-West Chester+ squad.

The fourth game of the night saw Lemon Gold (1-2), the D2 Kutztown team, take a 74-62 win over Maroon (0-3), the D3-Arcadia+ team, now the only one still chasing its first triumph.

Just two players reached the 20+ points breakout performances, both in losses as Hannah Rhoades on Maroon topped the earlier best summer night by a point scoring 26, while Purple’s Alainna Hopta scored 20.

Looking Ahead

For now, not enough games have been played to break ties in the standings, which resemble the current WNBA sections of logjams.

Following Black (3-0), three teams are a game back all at 2-1 in Sky, Purple, and Cyber Pink.

Incidentally, the + with the color teams’ real names indicate other players beyond the dominate group are on those squads.

Tied two games back at 1-2 are Lemon Gold, Royal, and Kelly in fifth with Maroon (0-3) in eighth trailing by three from the top but close enough to the rest to move up with a couple of wins.

On Thursday, the top game of the night will be at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1 when Cyber Pink (2-1) and Purple (2-1) meet.

The other early game on Court 2 has Black (3-0) facing Kelly (1-2).

The 7:45 p.m. nightcaps on Court 1 have Sky (2-1) facing Lemon Gold (1-2) while on Court 2 Royal (1-2) meets Maroon (0-3)

In staying unbeaten in a narrow win Emily Spratt scored 18 with a perfect 4-4 from the line, while Jordyn Thomas and Kaci Mikulski each scored eight points and five others also scored.

Cyber Pink got 16 from Holly Grohl, while Taylor Hamm scored 12, half coming on a perfect 6-6 at the line, and Gabby Bowes made two from deep on the way to 10 points.

Sky 60, Purple 56

In another narrow outcome Sky’s balanced attack featured Claire Dougherty with 13 points, Dani Brusha scored 11, Ella Brown, Amy Ngo, and Carolyn Prevost each scored 8 points, while Camryn Gregory collected 7 and Monee More scored 5.

Purple’s Alainna Hopt fired six 3-pointers and a perfect 2-2 on the line for 20 points, Aaliyah Holliday scored 11, while Sabria Mann scored 9 and Jordin Tate 8.

Lemon Gold 74, Maroon 62

Fiona Reckner scored two from beyond the arc and was 4-4 from the line on the way to lead the winners with 16 points, Brooke McFadden scored 15, Madelyn Bernhardt got all 12 of her points from four 3-pointers while Kathryn Randa scored 10 and Lily Bross scored eight.

Maroon in the loss produced the top performance of the night and season as Hannah Rhoades got 21 of her 26 points from seven makes from deep. Kyra Quigley added 15 points to the attack while Madelyn Weaver scored 9 points and Delaney Finn scored 5.

Royal 2, Kelly 0, forfeit

Kelly was unable to field the minimal number of players thus giving Royal its first win via forfeit.
