Red-Chestnut Hill, Purple-West Chester, and Black-Jefferson Go To 2-0 in Philly Women’s Summer League

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. — Team Black (D2-Jefferson), Team Red (D2-Chestnut Hill), and Team Purple (D2-West Chester) quickly moved front and center with wins to stay unbeaten at 2-0 Thursday night to conclude week one of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

The results set up a key contest Tuesday night at 7:45 p.m. when Red and Purple will meet on Court 2 in one of the nightcaps whose result will reduce the number of unbeaten squads in the nine-team league to just two.

Team Black (Jefferson) will be the designated bye group for the evening after pulling a second narrow triumph, this time 64-61 over Royal Blue (D3-Cabrini) following Tuesday night’s opener in which the Rams rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to beat Sky Blue (D2-Holy Family), their winter CACC rival 71-68 in overtime.

Jefferson’s Cassie Murphy followed her 20-point performance in the opener with 29 Thursday night.

Red played one of the three draft squads in the league (teams not dominated by one affiliation), handing Kelly Green its first loss 76-54 while Purple had another lopsided result, this one a 94-58 win over Maroon (D3-Arcadia).

Purple had two players hit the individual performance citations with Michelle Kozicki scoring 23 points and Valerie McGriff scoring 20.

Pink, another draft team, had the bye, while Sun, the third draft team came out of its opening night falling 57-44 to Sky Blue, which bounced back from the Jefferson loss to get to .500.

In Tuesday’s early 6:30 p.m. games someone on Court 2 will get to the winner column with Pink (0-1) meeting Royal Blue (0-2).

Sun (0-1) and Kelly Green (1-1) will meet on Court 1 at 6:30 p.m. while the other late game has Maroon (0-2) playing Sky Blue.

Incidentally, the commissioner reported an error on the rosters, Chestnut Hill’s Briana Rider, who had 19 points Thursday in the Red win, is a junior with the class of ’25, not a freshman, class of ’27.

Now 2here’s Bob with the recaps followed by the nightly running scoreboard.

Recaps

Red 76   Kelly Green 54

Team Red (Chestnut Hill) remained undefeated as they showed off their outside game, connecting on 11 three-point baskets as they defeated Team Kelly Green 76-54 Thursday night.

Red placed four players in double figures led by Bri Rider’s 19 points (3 three’s).  Sara Tamoun added 13 points (3 three’s) while Bridie McCann and Lindsay Lane chipped in 11 and ten respectively.

Dana Bandurick led Kelly Green with 13 points.  Anna Hansson added 12 while Regan Chrencik chipped in ten.

Five different Red players scored in the opening quarter as the two teams exchanged leads early on before a Rider bucket and a Kait Carter three-ball put the red squad ahead 9-5.

Siobhan Boylan and Lane took charge in the second quarter as Red expanded their lead to 27-20 at the half.  Boylan and Lane combined for 12 of Red’s 13 points in the quarter with Boylan hitting a pair of three point buckets and lane two field goals and a pair of free throws.

In the third quarter, Tamoun took over, scoring ten of her 13 points with a pair of three-point baskets, a layup and a long jumper as Red pushed their lead to 49-37 heading into the final period.

It was Rider’s turn in the fourth quarter as Red outscored Kelly 27-17.  She had five field goals, including all three of her three-balls in the period to finish with 11 points in the closeout.

Rider’s second three-ball of the quarter pushed Red’s lead to 20 at 65-45 while McCann’s lone three-ball late in the quarter gave red their biggest lead at 76-51.

Chrencik sank a three-pointer in the final seconds to provide the final margin of 22 points.

Black 64 Royal Blue 61

For the second night in a row, Team black (Jefferson University) needed a strong fourth quarter to eke out a close victory, defeating Team Royal Blue (Cabrini University) 61-58 to remain among the ranks of the unbeaten.

The shorthanded Black team had just six players with three of them, Cassie Murphy, Emily Spratt and Jordyn Thomas combined for 54 of their team’s 61 points.

Murphy turned in the high scoring performance of the night with 29 points.  Spratt added 15 while Thomas chipped in ten.

Royal Blue was led by Miranda Liebtag’s 18 points (three three’s) while Tamia Wessels added 16.

The game saw eight lead changes and eight ties, most of which came in the second half as neither team led by more than two possessions.

Liebtag’s three-point basket midway through the third quarter gave Royal a six-point lead 41-35 before Black closed out the quarter with a 12-4 run to lead 47-45 heading into the final quarter.

Katie Rodriguez tied the game with a basket to open the fourth quarter and Emma Stanfield followed with a three-point basket to put Red ahead 50-47.

Black followed with six straight points to retake the lead 53-50.  Liebtag tied the game again with another three-point basket before Spratt put Black back ahead 55-53 with 4:55 left.

A traditional three-point play from Spratt with just 1:15 left gave Black their biggest lead of the game at 62-56.

Royal pulled within three on Wessel’s basket in the final seconds, 84-61 and had one last chance to tie the game but Liebtag’s three-point shot was deflected as time expired.

Sky Blue 57 Sun 44

Sky Blue (Holy Family University) used a dominant fourth quarter to pull away from Team Sun and even their record at 1-1 with a 57-44 win in the late session Thursday night.

Carolyn Prevost led Sky with 16 points.  Jessica Riepe added 11.

Taylor Gurysh had 13 points while Danae Ellzy chipped in eight to pace the Sun squad.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first two quarters with the lead changing hands six times and neither team leading by more than five points at any given time over the first 20 minutes.

After Sun took a three-point lead 23-21, Sky ran off five straight points, a basket from Claire Dougherty followed by a three-pointer from Riepe to retake the lead.

Sun countered with a 10-5 run to close out the half and lead 33-32.

Sun scored the first three points of the third quarter to lead 36-31 before Sky rallied to tie the game and started to pull away, outscoring Sun 18-6 over the final seven minutes of action to lead 49-42 heading into the final period.

Gurysh brought Sun within five 49-44 after about three minutes of play in the fourth quarter.  Sky scored the final eight points of the period to pull away and seal the win 57-44.

Purple 94 Maroon 58

Team Purple (West Chester university) cruised to its second straight blowout win, defeating team Maroon (Arcadia University) 94-58 in the opening game on night two of summer league action and remained unbeaten through the first week.

Michelle Kozicki led four purple players in double figures with 23 points.  Valerie McGriff joined Kozicki as 20-point scorers with an even 20 points on the night.  Anna McTammney added 19 points while Leah Johnson scored 14.

Maroon had three players reach double figures with Hanna Rhoads scoring 18 points to lead the maroon offense.  Scarlett Glasser-Nehls added 14 points while Delaney Bell chipped in ten.

The first 15 minutes of action saw neither team gaining a solid advantage with the score knotted up at 25-25 midway through the second quarter.

Purple then took control, finishing out the quarter on a 15-2 run to lead 40-27 at halftime.

They continued to expand their lead in the third quarter, doubling their advantage with 28 third quarter points to 68-42.   The victors added another 26 points in the final quarter to finish with 54 in the half and secure the 36-point victory 94-58.
