The Guru Report: Black/D-2 Jefferson and Maroon/D2-USciences Undergrads Advance But Three-Seed Kelly/D2-Kutztown and Four-Seed Sky Blue/Holy Family Upset in Philly/Suburban WBB Summer League Quarterfinals

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. - Technically it will be an all-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Final Four in next week’s semifinals of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League following wins by the top two seeds and upsets by the 6th-seed Pink/D2-USciences Alumnae and 5th-seed Orange/D2-Chestnut Hill in Thursday night’s opening quarterfinals at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Black, which is on an unbeaten run had an easy time with 8th-seed Red/D3-Arcadia winning 94-34 to go to 8-0 while Arcadia (0-8) finished without a victory.

Two-seed Maroon/D2-USciences Undergrads felled 7th seed Royal Blue/D3-Ursinus 48-29 to move to 7-1, the only loss a lopsided one to Black, while Royal finished 1-8, the sole win over Red.

As for the upsets, after only losing to the top two seeds during the seven-game schedule, three-seed Kelly Green/D2-Kutztown was upended 45-33 by sixth-seed Pink/D2-USciences (4-4), which was better than the record indicated.

The other game was an upset by seed but really was an even match going in with five-seed Orange/Chestnut Hill downing four-seed Sky Blue/Holy Family 72-64 to get to 4-4 while the Tigers finished 3-5.

The Black game saw the top individual performance of the season as Sabia Lytes had 28 points and the Rams got another 20-plus effort from Haley Meinel, who scored 24.

A third 20-plus game was recorded by Emily Chmiel, who scored 20 exactly for the winning Orange team.

In next week’s semifinals on Wednesday. 1-seed Black meets 6-seed Pink on Court 1 at 6:30 p.m. followed on the same court at 7:45 p.m. by 5-seed Orange facing 2-seed Maroon.

The winners will turn right around and return Thursday night to play for the championship at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1.

Interestingly Black may have to go through both USciences squads to take the title or it’s possible it could be an all-Devils final for the program that will dissolve st the end  of spring of 2022 with the approaching merger of the school with D-1 Saint Joseph’s University.

Now here’s Bob with all the details of the quarterfinals.

QUARTERFINALS RECAPS

#1 Black   94     #8 Red    34

Top Seed Team Black (Jefferson University) opened their 2021 Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League playoff run with 94-34 quarterfinals win over Team Red (Arcadia University).

The win marks the third consecutive season that black has made the semi-finals.

Black placed four players in double figures led by Sabria Lytes 28 points, the most scored by a player in summer league game this season.  Haley Meinel added 24 points while Sam Yencha and Bridget Arcidiacono chipped in 17 and 15 points respectively.

Scarlett Glasser-Nehls scored 12 points to lead Red, who suited just five players for the game.

Led by Meinel’s 11 first quarter points, Black jumped out to a 31-8 lead after one quarter.

Black opened the second quarter with an 11-0 spurt, expanding their lead to 42-18.

The black squad pushed their lead up to 45 points by halftime 60-45.

Lytes scored 14 of her 28 points in the third quarter as Black continued to expand their lead, closing out the quarter up 77-25.

In the fourth quarter, Black outscored Red 17-9 to finish the game with the 60-point win.

#6 Pink   45   #3 Kelly Green 33

In the lone upset of the evening, sixth seed Team Pink (USciences Alumnae) avenged their 56-52 regular season loss to third seed Team Kelly Green (Kutztown University) holding the Kelly squad to a season-low 33 points en route to a 45-33 victory.

Jen Kremp (a Dickinson college senior) led Pink with 12 points while Laura Trisch added ten.

Leah Johnson (a West Chester University junior) led Kelly Green with 13 points.

Irisa Ye opened the scoring for Pink as her squad jumped out to an 11-6 lead after one quarter.

Pink’s defense then went to work, holding Kelly to just one field goal in the second quarter (a layup from Johnson) as they expanded their lead to 21-8.

Kremp’s four free throws along with a three-ball from Trisch and a traditional three-point play from Jordan Vitelli provided the Pink offense in the second quarter.

Three-point baskets from Kremp and Trisch in the third quarter increased Pink’s lead to its largest margin at 34-17.

Following Trisch’s bucket Kelly closed out the quarter with an 8-4 spurt to close within 13, 38-25 as the third quarter ended.

Neither team scored in the first 6:37 of the fourth quarter.

Johnson’s layup at the 3:23 mark pulled Kelly within 11, 38-27.

Vitelli followed with a basket and Shannon May then stole the ball and was promptly fouled making one free throw to push the lead to 12 and starting a string of trips to the free throw line that lasted for the remainder of the game.

Pink made four free throws in the final 2:17 to push the lead to 15 before Kelly tacked on three points in the final 18 seconds to round out the scoring.

#5 Orange 72   #4 Sky Blue 64

An explosive third quarter propelled fifth seed Team Orange (Chestnut Hill College) to a 72-64 win over fourth seed and defending league champion Team Sky Blue (Holy Family University) in the final quarter final game of the evening to advance to next week’s semi-final games.

Emily Chmiel led Orange with 20 points while Morgan sterner added ten.

Lindsay Tretter led Sky Blue with 14 points while Carolyn Prevost chipped in 11.

Leading 30-29 entering the third quarter, Orange scored the first nine points of the third quarter to take a double-digit lead, 39-29 and held the lead for the remainder of the game.

In the first quarter, Cassie Sebold scored the first six points for Orange as they jumped out to an early 6-4 lead.

Sky Blue countered with a 12-5 uprising to take a seven-point lead as the quarter was winding down.

Two Orange baskets closed the gap to 18-15 as the quarter ended.

Three lead changes and a tie highlighted the second quarter as neither team led by more than four throughout the second quarter.

Chmiel’s basket capped an 8-4 run to give Orange a slim 23-22 lead only to be outscored by Sky blue 7-2 as the Tiger squad took a 29-25 lead.

A Brianna Hewlett bucket and a three-pointer by Megan Orloski as time was expiring gave Orange a 30-29 halftime lead.

Orange’s 9-0 outburst to open the third led to a 12-2 run and their biggest lead of the game at 42-31.

Sky rebounded with an 11-4 run to pull within four 46-42 as Prevost provided the spark.

Two baskets from Chmiel and a three-pointer from Lauren Crim pushed the Chestnut Hill group’s lead back to nine 51-42 and later back to double-digits 55-45 as the quarter ended.

The Orange lead oscillated between six and 12 points for much of the final quarter and still led by ten 65-55 with 2:40 remaining.

Sky Blue mad one last run, closing within five 67-62 with 1:14 left.  Four free throws by Orange in the last 32 seconds sealed the 72-64 win.
