Philly Summer League: White, Gold and Maroon Join Hunter Green as Playoff Qualifiers

By Mel Greenberg

HATBORO, Pa. --
While the top of the standings in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA Women's Basketball Summer League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, remained the same after Thursday, shakeups occurred elsewhere.

Second-place White (7-1) and third-place Gold (8-2) joined Hunter Green (9-1) as official playoff qualifiers to the eight team field on records while Maroon (6-4), dominated by Division II University of the Sciences of Philadelphia, jumped into fourth place and clinched a playoff spot because it has tiebreakers off head-to-head wins over the four teams locked into the eighth-place battle.

Orange got its first win of the summer by taking down the team ahead and moving into a 12th place tie with a lopsided 666-33 win over Royal Blue (1-8).

Two things that did not occur were additional injuries added to the recent breakout of mishaps and for the first time this season no one hit the 20 points or more nightly performance standard.

Saint Joseph's junior Erin Shields, who has hit the category a league-leading five times this summer, hads the night's top performance but it was only for just 18 points, still good enough to help first-place Hunter Green (9-1) to maintain it's half-game lead over White while grabbing a 60-51 competitive victory over Sky Blue (5-4), which fell into a three-way tie with Red and Purple for fifth place.

Shields hit four 3-pointers while Hunter Green player-coach and former Hawks star Katie Kuester scored 11 points, Erin's sister and recent Boston College graduate Kerri Shields eighth, and that total was matched by Jessica Pongonis, an incoming Hawks freshman.

Sky Blue, which is dominated by Division II West Chester, got 15 points from Golden Rams sophomore Brittany Sicinski, one of the league-leading scorers. Emily Torrance, an incoming WC freshman, scored 10 points, Golden Rams junior Tiffany Johnson scored nine points and her classmate Junaid Serifat scored seven points.

White stayed a half-game behind Hunter Green with an easy 75-45 win over Navy Blue (3-6) though the league leaders have the head-to-head tiebreaker if both teams win out, which could happen. Hunter Green has two games left and White has three. The remaining schedule through the playoffs is down below.

In the White win, Jasmine Elum, a recent Bethune-Cookman graduate, had 13 points, Villanova junior Emily Leer scored 12, Wildcats sophomore Caroline Coyer scorred 11, and Courtney Jade Hinnant, a Division II Millersville incoming freshman, scored 10 points.

Amina Affini, a Lehigh sophomore, scored 14 points for Navy Blue, highlighted by four 3-pointers, while Ciara Andrews, a Saint Joseph's sophomore, scored 11 points, and Kelsey Berger, a Hawks senior, scored nine points.

Gold (8-2) stayed in third a game back and capable at this hour of being part of a three-way tie at the finish after collecting a 54-49 win over Kelly Green (3-6), which fell into a four-way tie for eighth but the predominately Division II Holy Family group may have the best shot at the playoffs.

Sarah Fairbanks, a Saint Joseph's sophomore, scored nine points for Gold while her Hawks classmate Natasha Cloud, a junior, scored eighth points, and Madeline Ross, a recent Division III Swarthmore graduate, scored seven points.

Carolyne Heston, a Holy Family senior, scored nine points for Kelly Green, a total matched by Tigers senior Maggie Serratelli, while Brittany Wood, a Division III Delaware Valley junior, scored eight points.

Maroon, the USP group, took a 70-59 win over Black, the Philadelphia University group, as Devils star Brianne Traub scored 13 points, 2017 graduate Camille McPherson scored 13, Shannon Evans, a Devils sophomore, scored 10 points, which 2017 graduate Jessica Sylvester matched.

Najah Jacobs, a Phila. U. junior, scored 16 points for Black, while Bria Young, a Rams junior, scored 13, and junior Monica Schacker scored 11 points.

Black and Kelly Green have a key game Tuesday night, which is addressed in the looking ahead section on the schedule down below.

Red (5-4) moved into a three-way tie for fifth with Sky Blue and Purple by beating Purple 58-52 as the predominately Division III Scranton group got 11 points each from incoming Royals freshman Sarah Payonk and Scranton junior Lia DiSciascio, while Alison Sweeney, a Royals senior, scored eight points, Lafayette junior Emily Homan, scored seven points, and Kate Sherry, a Scranton senior, scored six points, as did Royals junior Lindsay Fluehr, getting all her points with a 6-for-6 performance from the free throw line.

Liz Sharlow, a Lehigh sophomore, scored 12 points for Purple, while Christine Verrelle, a Dowling College junior, scored 10 points, as did Kiernan McCloskey, a Lehigh freshman, and Meg Gallagher, a Division III DeSales junior.

The remaining game is detailed down below in the Thursday recaps.

Tuesday's Remaining Overall Recap

Orange 66, Royal Blue 33: Shea Wassel, a York College junior, scored 13 points to give Orange its first win of the season after a recent tough loss to Gold while Devin Gold, a Shippensburg freshman, scored 11 points, and Danielle Derr, a recent Division II Bloomsburg graduate, scored 10 points.

Alyssa Bonenberger of Division II Kutztown scored 14 points for Royal Blue and Kelsey Watson, a Kutztown freshman, scored nine points.

Hitting the Milestone

On Thursday night as mentioned above while Hunter Green's Erin Shields had the night's top performance with 18 points that fell two short of hitting the 20 points or more standard.

She is the season leader, however, with five times scoring 20 points or more.

Injury Report

After suffering a string of mishaps, at signoff following Thursday's action there were no reports of any new injuries.

Explaining the Standings

Once again this time around the standings are still in their natural tiebreaking state for the moment in terms of seeding order if regular season play ended today, though not everybody has yet to play the same number of games because of the nightly byes.

For those who have already taken their byes three games remain while the others have just two left on the 12-game regular-season schedule heading into the playoffs.

Right now Hunter Green, White, Gold, and now Maroon hold the first four spots all alone because of records and all have clinched playoff berths as mentioned above.

Red caught Purple and Sky Blue to cause a three-way tie for fifth and for the moment the placement works like this factoring records against each other.

Red is fifth at 1-0, Purple is sixth at 1-1, and Sky Blue is seventh at 0-1 with all having three games remaining and for now they have a two-game lead on the four-way logjam at eighth, which is where the final playoff spot will be attained.

At the moment in that group, Kelly Green is 2-0, which would be good enough if the regular season ended right now.

Navy Blue is ninth at 2-1, Black is 10th at 1-1, and Heather Grey, which had Thursday night's bye, is 0-2.

Orange's first win of the summer, which was against Royal Blue, moved the previous winless group into a tie for 12th with Royal blue and the 12th spot because of the head-to-head triumph.

White and Gold off records joined Hunter Green as official playoffs teams and Maroon earned the distinction because they have head-to-head wins against all the teams that could still mathematically catch them -- which are the group in the four-way tie for eighth.

Technically, everyone is still alive for a playoff berth but that will most likely diminish by the time next Tuesday's action is in the scorebooks.

The Guru will do more after Tuesday night but here are the remaining games left for the teams in the four-way tie for eighth..

K.G. vs. Black, 7/23; vs. R.B., 7/25; vs. Orange, 7/30
N.B. vs. Red, 7/23; vs. Orange, 7/25; vs. Sky Blue, 7/30
Black vs vs. K.G., 7/23; vs. Gold, 7/25; vs. White, 7/30
Heath G. vs. Hunt G., 7/23; vs. White, 7/25; vs. Purple, 7/30

The running grid is now in proper order to look at tiebreakers for seeding and making the eight-team field, though while the big gridlocks have been reduced to small knots, enough games are left to either create some headaches at the pre-playoff finish or everything may be resolved without much angst caused to the commissioner and the Guru, his standings consulting officer.

Also, continued special thanks to Tom Utescher for providing pictures that will enable this report to switch over to being housed in PhilahoopsW and a duplicate of last Thursday's report here is now over at http://philahoopsw.com to see what the future of coverage may be.

The Guru will tweet @womhoopsguru when photos and coverage at philahoopsw are in play.
