Philly WBB Summer League: Red and Black Head to 1-2 Showdown

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. — Call Tuesday’s action and outcomes in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Summer Basketball League “Status Quo” Night at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

In a rarity, if not a first, for this late in the season, the standings remained exactly the same at the conclusion of play as they were at the outset as the top five teams swept the bottom five teams.

Furthermore, with colleague Bob Heller away for his second of two separate weeks this summer tending other duties, the recaps will have less meat but as it evolved that’s no problem because four of the five games involving the league’s ten teams were lopsided blowouts.

Only Purple’s 61-59 win over Lime Green was undecided down the stretch.

And while there was no movement in seed positions, the results did lead to the start of clarifying the seeds for the playoffs which begin with an opening round doubleheader a week from Thursday.

A second regular-season showdown at the top was also set up for Thursday at 7 p.m. on Court 2 when unbeaten Red (7-0), built primarily from D2-West Chester and D3-Gettysburg, will meet Black, which is primarily D2-Jefferson (6-1), last summer’s runner up.

A Red win will clinch the top seed since the squad will be two games in front with one night left.

However, a Black win moves the Rams into a tie and off the head-to-head win in position for the top spot if both are deadlock after Red meets Lime Green, primarily D2-Chestnut Hill, and Black plays Royal Blue, primarily D2-Kutztown/D3-Salisbury, on Tuesday.

A year ago, Black ran the table straight to the title game, only to be felled by Maroon, Black’s D2-USciences’ winter rival from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).

Black had been unbeaten this summer but was upset by the Devils, which had been struggling early on the schedule, last Tuesday.

Red and Black both have tie-break advantages off Sky Blue, also known as D2-Holy Family, dealing the Tigers their only losses.

Maroon’s other loss came early to Sky Blue, though several wins last month came at the wire.

In terms of all the results, Red did its part to enter Thursday’s clash by beating Kelly Green, also known as the combination of D2-Millersville/D3-Moravian 103-53, the second straight game Kelly Green gave up 100 or more points.

Black handled Orange (2-5), also known as D3-Ursinus. 96-42.

Meanwhile Maroon (5-2) topped winless Golden Sun (0-7), also known as D3-Arcadia, 83-36, while Sky Blue (5-2) cruised over Royal Blue (D2-Kutztown/D3-Salisbury) 74-49.

Individual Performances

After much of the summer saw a meager amount of players hit the nightly 20-or-more points individual performance milestone, a second straight night of season high totals showed scoring prowess with seven players this time edging the six from Thursday.

The night’s best performance came from Royal Blue’s Alyssa Bondi, who had 29 points in the loss to Sky Blue, fueled by seven three-balls.

Incidentally, longtime commissioner David Kessler updated Bondi’s listing, she is not a sophomore at Misericordia but rather an incoming student from East Brunswick High in central New Jersey who will be taking an accelerated course load allowing her to graduate in three years.

She will go on to pursue a doctorate.

Right behind Bondi, Red’s Avery Bennett, a West Chester sophomore, scored 28, while Red also got 20 off West Chester freshman Leah Johnson, who fired four treys along the way for her third time to reach the standard.

It was Bennett’s first time gaining the milestone this summer while Maroon got another big night from Jess Huber with 26 points off six three-pointers and Devils teammate Taylor Hamm also scored 26 in making her debut in the highlight circle.

Black’s Alexandra Warren, another East Brunswick grad who is a senior at Jefferson, scored 21 off thee shots from beyond the arc, while Sky Blue’s Dana Dockery of Holy Family made her debut with 21 points, firing a trio of three-balls.

Looking Ahead

As mentioned, the big game of the night Thursday occurs on Court 3 at 7 p.m. with unbeaten Red hosting Black, which can move into a tie for first with a win as well as a tentative claim on the top seed.

Purple (4-3) can move up a spot through a tie-break by upsetting Maroon (5-2) at 7 p.m. on Court 1, though the 4-5 seeds become the same quarterfinal matchup.

Sky Blue (5-2), likely destined for the third seed, will look to not slip down when it plays Golden Sun (0-7) at 8:15 p.m. on Court 1.

Orange (2-5) and Lime Green (2-5) are likely headed for opening round play but the head-to-head game at 8:15 p.m. on Court 2 will snap a tie when they meet.

Royal Blue (3-4) in the other remaining game, will be looking to clinch a quarterfinal bye when it meets Kelly Green (1-6) at 7 p.m.

Breaking Ties

At the moment, Red is alone unbeaten in first as mentioned playing Black, which is alone in second, on Thursday night.

Sky Blue and Maroon are tied for third at 5-2 but Sky Blue has the third seed off a head-to-head win early in the season.

These first four have clinched byes into the quarterfinals.

Purple has also clinched a quarterfinal final bye through head-to-head wins with everyone below them in the standings.

Royal Blue is alone in sixth but mathematically right now could drop into the first-round opening doubleheader.

It has tie breaks with three below and yet to play Kelly Green but off the math needs one more win to hold tiebreaks into the quarterfinals.

Though the seven-through 10 seeds are likely to be the opening round teams, the pairings are still open ended though could be resolved after Thursday.

To repeat the basics, this is the section that will house how seeds are determined each night leading to the playoffs in which all 10 teams qualify but the top six get byes to the quarterfinals while the opening round will match seeds seven and ten besides sees eight and nine in a doubleheader to advance the other two.

Two-way ties are determined by head-to-head results. Along the way if teams haven’t met yet, then best win becomes the deal maker.

Three or more teams involved in a deadlock are determined through common records against each other.

In some situations before getting near the final standings the criteria hasn’t been met and teams will just be arbitrarily placed and when that is done it will be reported in this place.

The quick way to look at how seeds are shaping is the tie-tracker grid at the bottom of this report but in front of the rosters.

Meanwhile, details of the wins this week are lacking with Bob’s temporary departure but they are a moot point except in the Purple/Lime Green outcome.

Nevertheless here’s the breakdown with high scorers, as provided by the commissioner.

Re-Caps

Black 96, Orange 42

After scoring over 100 points Thursday in the win over Kelly Green, the Orange/D3-Ursinus group were shut down by the Black/Jefferson group contending for the top seed.

Black’s Alexandra Warren’s 21 was  already mentioned.

Alynna Williams also had a big night for the winners with 17 points off a trio of dimes. Also in double figures for the Rams, Sabria Lytes had 14 points and Haley Meinel scored 13.

Alana Davidson, one of the few D-1 players on rosters this summer,  out of New Hope Solebury and A-10’s Davidson scored 14 for Orange while Alyssa Martin had eight points and Gabby Downs scored seven points.

Purple 61, Lime Green 59

In the one close game of the night, helping the D2-East Stroudsburg Alums edge their way to a win, Brady Wassel, actually an Albright sophomore out of Lansdale Catholic, had 17 points, Sydney Blum, an incoming freshman to the College of New Jersey out of Council Rock North, scored nine, and Dana Bandurick, an incoming D3-Swarthmore student also out of Council Rock North, scored eight points.

Brianna Cullen, a D3-Widener 2018 grad out of North Penn, scored 14 for Lime Green, while Alana Cardona, an Indiana U. Of Pa. student out of Souderton, scored 12, and Cassie Sebold, a Chestnut Hill junior out of Archbishop Wood, scored 10 for Lime Green.

Red 103, Kelly Green 53

Joining Avery Bennett and Leah Johnson, who has already been mentioned on the Red team, Mary DeSimone, an incoming West Chester freshman from Archbishop Carroll, scored 16 off three from beyond the arc, while Becca Margolis, a Golden Rams sophomore from Council Rock North, scored 14, as did Gabby Troisi, a West Chester senior out of Pope John Paul II. Katie Fisher, a West Chester incoming frosh from Notre Dame, scored 11.

Samantha Brusha, a D3-Millersville junior out of Abington, almost hit the mark again, scoring 19 for Kelly Green, shooting 4-for-4 from the line. Kate Seeman, a Rochester student out of Lenape, scored 12, all from four three-pointers, while Jessica McKenzie, a Centenary sophomore out of North Penn, scored 11.

Sky Blue 74, Royal Blue 49

Behind Dana Dockery’s 21 mentioned for the Sky Blue/D2-Holy Family group, Liz Radley, a Tigers senior out of Bishop Eustace in South Jersey, scored 18, and Monee Moore, an incoming freshman from Archbishop Ryan, scored 12.

Alyssa Bondi’s 29 for Royal Blue was already noted.

Maroon 83, Golden Sun 36

Taylor Hamm’s and Jess Huber’s 26 each for winning Maroon was previously mentoned while Juliana Gura, a Devils sophomore out of St. Basil, scored 10, and Kendall Keyes, a future 2025 work/study USciences out of Lenape Regional, scored nine.

Taylor Dunn, an Arcadia senior out of Central Bucks South, scored 10 for Golden Sun, while seven other players also made the scorebook for Golden Sun.

Directions to Kelly Bolish Gym

The gym is located on 2950 Turnpike Drive in Willow Grove Industrial Commons business park, which runs alongside the Pennsylvania Turnpike and a few miles from the Willow Grove exit for Route 611.

The drive begins off Davisville Road near the intersection of Byberry and Davisville Roads. If you driving north (Davisville begins by the way in Willow Grove off 611 near the Septa Willow Grove rail stop,) right before the  turnpike, you make a left at the traffic light and go all the way down till you see a sign for the business park, and the gym is on the left halfway down with a big sign on the building.

If you are coming from Davisville and Byberry heading south, as soon as you cross the turnpike, you turn right and follow the last leg directions above.

Public Transit: You can take the Warminster Line and get off at Willow Grove and then it’s a short five-minute ride share to the gym.

Or from the Broadstreet Subway Olney stop and transit center, take the 55 going north up 611 and get off at Davisville Road. The bus also stops at Willow Grove Mall. Then ride share the final leg.

Admission is free.

There is a cheap snack bar offering hot dogs, water ice, sodas, hamburgers, chips and other items if you are heading straight from work and need something to hold you over.

For a fuller meal, there are plenty of good eateries within a few miles of the gym.
