HATBORO, Pa. — There will be no undefeated teams entering the playoffs next Thursday when the second phase of the 10-team Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League gets under way here at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.
Team Black, also known as D2-Jefferson University, one of the powers in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference in the winter, made sure of that Thursday night by taking down 67-62 in overtime previously unbeaten Team Red, also known as the primarily combo of D2-West Chester and D3-Gettysburg.
The two squads ended regulation knotted 60-60.
The result for now has a tie at the top of the standings with both teams 7-1, Black’s lone loss an upset to Maroon, its key CACC winter rival also known as USciences, which last summer ruined Jefferson’s perfect run by avenging the regular season loss in the title game.
Thus, Black (7-1), with one night of the regular season left on Tuesday, can claim the top seed again by beating Royal Blue (4-4) at 8:15 p.m. on Court 1.
Red meets Lime Green (3-5) at 7 p.m. on Court 1.
However, once the postseason begins, unlike some previous summers, the run from the quarterfinals on July 30, through the semis on Aug. 1 and to the championship on Aug. 6 could be more than a one or two-team affair.
Incidentally, while yours truly on Tuesday dodged a bullet this week single-handedly doing the whole report while colleague Bob Heller is away tending to other duties — all but one of the games were wipeouts — the action was more competitive on Thursday, highlighted by the Black-Red game.
One game became a non-game when Royal Blue (4-4), also known as the combination of D2-Kutztown and D3-Salisbury, gained a 2-0 forfeit win when Kelly Green (1-7), the primary combination of D2-Millersville/D3-Moravian was unable to field enough players by the end of the 15-minute grace period on 7 p.m. scheduled starts, per league rules.
That 2-0 score given to Royal Blue enabled the squad to clinch the last quarterfinal bye spot of the six teams who won’t have to play next Thursday in the round one opening doubleheader.
In an oddity, though one night of the regular season remains, the seven through 10 seed designations are set no matter what the outcomes are on Tuesday night.
Not so, the 1-6 spots, and many ties mathematically loom, though the odds are long for occurring considering the matchups.
Furthermore, even if they do occur most of the tie-breaks are already in place, which will be discussed below in the seeds section.
As far as the other three games played, Lime Green (D2-Chestnut Hill) and Orange (D3-Ursinus) went head-to-head to break their deadlock of several weeks with Lime Green a narrow 61-59 winner.
Sky Blue (D2-Holy Family) got a bit of a challenge before keeping Golden Sun (0-7) out of the win column with a 56-46 triumph.
Maroon stayed tied with Sky Blue at 6-2 by beating Purple (D2-East Stroudsburg Alums) 63-59 gaining final control late in the fourth quarter.
Individual Performances
Though it was one of the more competitive nights across the board, in terms of hitting the individual highs of 20 or more points, despite the weather heat, things simmered down to the way it had gone most of the season until last Thursday and this past Tuesday when six and seven individuals, respectively, gained the milestone.
Just two secured the barrier on Thursday with Erin Doherty, an incoming freshman to Catholic U. Out of Havertown High hitting he mark for the second time this season, scoring 21 to help Lime Green to its narrow win over team Orange, scoring three three-balls in the process against the D3-Ursinus group.
Jess Huber, the USciences junior out of North Penn High who has been one of the leading multi-performers reaching the nightly highlights with now four appearances, had 20 fueled from five shots from beyond the arc, to help Maroon in its narrow win over Purple, the predominantly D2-East Stroudsburg alumni group.
Looking Ahead
We’ll get into more ahead detail in the next section but as far as the matchups mentioned already, Red will be looking to stay alive and get back its top seed by beating Lime Green (3-5) at 7 p.m. on Court 1 and then hoping Black will get upset at the same site in the 8:15 p.m. contest when it meets Royal Blue (4-4).
Sky Blue (6-2) is a strong favorite to top Kelly Green (1-7) in the 7 p.m. game on Court 2 while Maroon (6-2) will be looking to keep pace on the same site in it’s 8:15 p.m. matchup meeting Orange (2-6).
In the last game on Court 3 for the summer, played at 7 p.m., Purple (4-4) will try to avoid being the sole victim of Golden Sun (0-8).
Breaking Ties And Setting Playoff Seeds
Other then the who did what — Bob is back Tuesday to tell you how the rest of the way moving forward — in the next section, here’s all the meat as stretch time has arrived.
First, let’s just deal Thursday night as the next in line in terms of how the current standings came to be.
The Black win as mentioned over Red places Jefferson in first despite the tie using the head-to-head criteria while Red is in a first place tie but in the second seed slot.
A game behind, a tie for third exists but like the method above, the early Sky Blue (6-2) upset of Maroon (6-2) makes Holy Family for now the three seed and USciences fourth.
With a two-game edge, as a group over the next teams, they will be the 1-4 seeds, how to be determined by Tuesday before the playoffs begin.
Purple (4-4) and Royal Blue (4-4) are tied for fifth but Purple has the five seed off its narrow win against sixth seed Royal Blue.
They are obviously, however, each a game up on seventh-seed Lime Green, the only team that can catch them, but be it if the final standings make it a three-way for fifth, or a two-way with Lime Green being locked with either one, Purple and Royal Blue win every tie break involving Lime Green off head-to-head wins so that clears the duo as the last arrivals for quarterfinals byes.
The only thing undetermined is a split Tuesday that could jump Royal Blue over Purple but considering the matchups, it’s not likely to happen.
If anything, Royal Blue could end up tied with Lime Green, but considering Red is the opponent, that’s not likely to happen either.
Now finishing the standings but also explaining why the opening round is set, none of the bottom four teams can get to the quarterfinals.
Right now Lime Green is seventh, a game ahead of eighth place Orange, which is a game ahead of seventh place Kelly Green, leaving Golden Sun tenth.
The worst Lime could do is drop to a tie with Orange, but Thursday’s win thus clinches the seventh seed, with no other movement available.
Likewise, Orange is a game ahead of Kelly Green, but if they tie for eighth, Kelly Green has the head-to-head advantage.
And should Golden Sun catch Kelly Green with its sole win on the schedule, Kelly Green still owns ninth off its only win, which came opening night against Golden Sun.
Thus the first round playoff doubleheader is set for next Thursday with seventh seed Lime Green facing 10th-seed Golden Sun at 7 on Court 1 followed by eighth-seed Orange meeting ninth-seed Kelly Green at 8:15 at the same site.
Now at this hour a Red win and a Black loss would flip the top two seeds as they exist, but each could not drop to three because each has beaten Sky Blue and Maroon.
Mathematically there could be a four-way first-place tie but unlike some previous Einstein actions needed to break past ties, this is already handled because when measuring common records within the group, Black and Red are 1-2 and then Black takes the head to head, leaving Sky Blue to take the head-to-head to third seed.
So that’s it until we see the final scores from Tuesday to see who actually is 1-6 in order but all the outcomes for all situations are already calculated.
Meanwhile, details of the wins this week are lacking with Bob’s temporary departure.
Nevertheless here’s the breakdown with high scorers, as provided by the commissioner.
Re-Caps
Black 67, Red 62, overtime
The 1-2 teams lived up to the billing with Red (7-2) unable to clinch the top seed after finishing regulation tied at 60-60 against last season’s league runners up.
Both teams are 7-1 and Red has one last shot if it wins Tuesday and Black loses.
Alynna Williams, a Rams senior out of Plymouth Whitemarsh High, led Black’s cause with 19 points, just missing the milestone honor, while sister senior classmate Caitlyn Cunningham out of Mount St. Joseph’s scored 17, and Bridget Arcidiacono, a sophomore out of Archbishop Wood, scored 12.
Leah Johnson, an incoming West Chester frosh, led Red with 17 points, Golden Rams senior Gabby Troisi out of Pope John II, scored 14, and Becca Margolis, a sophomore out of Council Rock North, scored 12.
Maroon 63, Purple 59
The USciences defending champs from a year ago stayed in the hunt for possibly a move to the third seed at 6-2 by edging the East Stroudsburg Alums contingent in a hard-fought wire-to-wire battle.
Behind the 20 from Jess Huber off five treys, Irisa Ye, a junior out of North Penn, scored 10, while Brigit Coleman, a senior out of Gynedd Mercy, scored nine, and Taylor Hamm, a sophomore out of Perkiomen Valley, scored eight.
Purple dropped to 4-4, but holding the tie break at fifth, as Dana Bandurick, a Swarthmore freshman out of Council Rock North, scored 17, Brady Wassel, an Albright sophomore out of Lansdale Catholic, scored nine, and eight others from the squad got points to gain the scorebook.
Sky Blue 56, Golden Sun 46
As the Holy Family group (6-2) moved within a game of taking the third seed off either standing alone or a head-to-head early win over Maroon, Liz Radley, a senior out of Bishop Eustace, scored 19, Meghan O’Connell, a sophomore out of St. Hubert, scored eighth, and five other Tigers made the scorebook.
For Golden Sun, Taylor Fritz had 13 points, while Taylor Dunn and Sammi Falencki each scored 10 with Dunn nailing a trio of shots from beyond the arc.
Lime Green 61, Orange 59
After being tied for several weeks, the Lime Green/Chestnut Hill squad (3-5) claimed a narrow win and seventh playoff seed behind previously mentioned Erin Doherty’s 21 points, the top performance of the night in the league, while Cassie Sebold, a junior out of Archbishop Wood, scored 13, and Bri Hewlett, a sophomore out of North Penn, scored 12.
Orange, the D3-Ursinus squad (2-6), which dropped to eighth seed for the playoffs, in another tough loss, got 18 points fueled by four three-balls from Courtney Hardy, an incoming Montclair freshman in North Jersey, while Alana Davidson, the New Hope-Solebury D 1 player out of the Atlantic 10’s Davidson University, had another nice showing with 17 points.
Royal Blue 2, Kelly Green 0, forfeit
As mentioned, the lone forfeit of the season, one of the longer ones before such has occurred, gave Royal Blue (4-4) a tied four fifth with the sixth seed and a chance to move up to fifth if Purple loses Tuesday.
The loss by Kelly Green (1-7) dropped it into the ninth seed for the opening round of playoffs next Thursday playing eighth seed Orange in the second game.
Directions to Kelly Bolish Gym
The gym is located on 2950 Turnpike Drive in Willow Grove Industrial Commons business park, which runs alongside the Pennsylvania Turnpike and a few miles from the Willow Grove exit for Route 611.
The drive begins off Davisville Road near the intersection of Byberry and Davisville Roads. If you driving north (Davisville begins by the way in Willow Grove off 611 near the Septa Willow Grove rail stop,) right before the turnpike, you make a left at the traffic light and go all the way down till you see a sign for the business park, and the gym is on the left halfway down with a big sign on the building.
If you are coming from Davisville and Byberry Roads heading south, as soon as you cross the turnpike, you turn right and follow the last leg directions above.
Public Transit: You can take the Warminster Line and get off at Willow Grove and then it’s a short five-minute ride share to the gym.
Or from the Broadstreet Subway Olney stop and transit center, take the 55 going north up 611 and get off at Davisville Road. The bus also stops at Willow Grove Mall. Then ride share the final leg.
Admission is free.
There is a cheap snack bar offering hot dogs, water ice, sodas, hamburgers, chips and other items if you are heading straight from work and need something to hold you over.
For a fuller meal, there are plenty of good eateries within a few miles of the gym.
