The Guru Report: Temple Becomes a Tri-Champion in the AAC; Patriot League Field Set; Daily Results and Schedule Thru Next Monday
By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru
PHILADELPHIA — On a day in which No. 14 Rutgers in the Big Ten and No. 12 La Salle in the Atlantic 10 were quickly dispatched from their respective conference tournaments, Temple got to enjoy a thrill Wednesday night not enjoyed in over a decade.
While the competition in the American Athletic Conference finished their regular season business on Tuesday, the Owls once again dominated an opponent with a similar mascot at home in the Liacouras Center, beating new member Florida Atlantic 74-53 and joined Tulsa and North Texas as tri-champions.
In breaking the deadlock for seeding in the tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, which begins Saturday, Tulsa will be No. 1, North Texas will be No. 2, and Temple will be third, a spot the Owls would have held had they lost.
Like the other top three finishers, Temple was already holding the reward of a double bye, playing Monday in Dickey’s Arena at 9 p.m. against the survivor of the first two rounds among No. 11 SMU, No. 14 Tulane, who meet on Saturday, or No. 6 Charlotte, which will meet the winner of the opener on Sunday.
But for the moment, it was senior night delight beginning with second-year coach Diane Richardson, whose first season was an 11-win struggle on a shortened roster caused by injuries and departures.
If Temple (19-11, 13-5), picked ninth in the AAC preseason coaches' poll, takes their quarterfinal game they will tie the the program record for best turnaround.
The last time the Owls were on the summit of a conference was 2012 when they competed in the Atlantic 10.
The conference office was not expecting an expanded budget for hardware back in the fall when South Florida was the coaches’ choice, the Bulls having replaced UConn as the most feared opponent when the Huskies returned to the Big East.
However, the Bulls were hit with some injuries along the way and some of the new membership kids showed showed that they could cause rough days at the office for their opponents.
But from late January into Wednesday night Temple forged itself as a fearsome bunch, especially on defense, launching a 9-2 run through the conference, one of the losses in double overtime at Charlotte.
“I don’t pay attention to preseason polls, or otherwise you’ll end up performing that way,” said Richardson, who several years ago took Towson to the NCAA tournament capturing the then-named Colonial Athletic Association tourney at Delaware, rallying over Drexel. In the closing minutes.
Though outrebounded, the Owls’ pressure for FAU (11-18, 6-12) into 28 turnovers giving them a 23-8 advantage in transition.
“We’ve got to continue to play tough defense,” Richardson said. “That defense against some teams turns them over. We’ve got to continue to harp on defense and turn people over.”
Senior Rayne Tucker, who followed Richardson from Towson, did her part with 10 points, seven boards, four steals and three blocked shots.
The Owls were not without fire, however.
Reserve Tarriyonna Gary was 7-for-10 from the field, including 6-of-7 makes from deep.
“Every time she shoots the ball, we think it’s going in,” Richardson said. “She spends lots of hours in the gym working on her shot. She’s been confident and knocking them down.”
Tiarra East off the bench scored 17 and had six steals while senior Aleah Nelson, who also transferred from Towson, dealt nine assists.
Midway through the fourth, it was clear the Owls were on the way to grab the win they coveted for senior night and when the game ended, the celebration broke out equal to if they had just won the NCAA.
“We’re champions,” Richardson beamed, bringing the trophy into the media room and the squad attired in shirts also saying as such.
Even if Temple falls short of the automatic qualifier that comes with the conference title for access to the NCAA field of 68, the Owls likely could land in the new NCAA-organized 32-team WBIT or the longstanding 48-team WNIT.
The four teams that just miss the NCAA field will be top seeds in the WBIT but the teams that lose in the first four opening round will not then move on to the new event, contrary to a report suggesting such action.
Incidentally, the Ivy League, who applauded Columbia making a run to the WNIT title round last season, has approved the new event but is not allowing members access to the WNIT.
Patriot League Field Set
Wednesday night was also the end of the regular season in the Patriot League, which also had a bunch of deadlocks to be broken with a three-way tie for first among them.
But that resolved itself, with Holy Cross, the preseason favorite, downing visiting Lafayette, 77-69, in Worcester, Mass., while Colgate (17-12, 10-8) slammed visiting Boston U. 77-40 and American edging host Loyola, Md., 73-70.
In the Holy Cross game, Bronagh Power-Cassidy from Dublin, Ireland, scored 30 points for the Crusaders (17-12, 11-7) while Lafayette (10-19, 5-13), one of two local teams in the league, got 18 points and eight boards from Abby Antognoli, while Makayla Andrews had 13 points, and Emma Shields scored 12.
Lehigh (17-12, 9-9), the other local, was also on the road and won at Army 64-51 in West Point, N.Y., as Ella Stemmer scored 17 points against the Black Knights (12-16, 9-9).
The Patriot League conducts all rounds on home courts, the higher seeds doing the hosting.
Lafayette, the tenth seed, will open Saturday at No. 7 Navy in Annapolis, Md., at 1 p.m. while No. 9 American U. will visit No. 8 Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa., at 7 p.m.
In quarterfinal action on Monday, the 9–8 winner visits No. 1 Holy Cross at 7 p.m., the Lafayette 10-7 winner goes to No. 2 Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y., at 6 p.m., No. 6 Army visits No. 3 Boston at 6:10 p.m., and No. 5 Lehigh visits No. 4 Loyola, Md., in suburban Baltimore, at 7:10 p.m.
The semifinals are on Thursday, March 14, at a time to be determined, all games on ESPN+ while the championship on March 17 will air at noon on CBSSN.
Rutgers and La Salle Ousted on Day One
Dual seasons of struggles, they even met each other back in November, ended quickly for Rutgers in the Big Ten Tournament in Minneapolis, Minn., at the Target Center, while La Salle fell in the first day of action in the Atlantic 10 in the new Henrico Sports & Events Center in the suburbs of Richmond, Va.
In the Big 10, the Scarlet Knights (8-24, 2-16) suffered a 77-69 loss to Minnesota (16-14, 5-13) wasting a spectacular performance from Destiny Adams, who scored 31 points and grabbed a career-high 24 rebounds, setting a single-game Big Ten record on the boards.
Erica Lafayette added 16 points.
Elsewhere on the opening day for the Big Ten, which is a sellout for the whole tourney, another residual from Caitlyn Clark playing for Iowa, No.12 Purdue edged No.13 Northwestern 78-72 as Abbey Ellis scored 25 points for the Boilermakers (13-17).
In the Atlantic 10, La Salle’s year of adjustment with 10 new players came to an end at the hands of Massachusetts 54-49 in the tourney opener.
“We knew this year was about growth, about maturing,” said Explorers coach Mountain MacGillivray. “We knew we were going to be taking our lumps.”
Massachusetts (5-26), two seasons removed from winning the A-10 tourney, and one from winning the regular season, had its struggles also.
Freshman Nicole Melious had 17 points for La Salle (8-22), while Molly Masciantonio in her final game had 10 points, three assists, and four steals.
On Thursday in the second round, Dayton, which beat St. Bonaventure, 66-52, meets Rhode Island (18-13) at 7:30 p.m.
The Rams were the preseason favorite, but dropped to a six seed, and beating the Flyers will create a quarterfinal meeting at 7:30 p.m. with Saint Joseph’s, which had its best season ever at 26-4 and landed the third seed out of a tie for second with VCU and George Mason.
The Hawks swept Rhode Island during the season.
The No. 1 team for the first time became Richmond, which meets Thursday’s winner between Loyola Chicago and Fordham.
Tough Day for Washington Duo in the Pac-12
In the loaded Pac-12, which will exist in name only other than for Washington State and Oregon State for football, the two Washington schools, said to be on the bubble, failed to advance in the tournament in Las Vegas, Washington State falling to California 65-44 while Washington lost to Arizona 58-50.
The two ranked teams having to play in openers advanced, No. 18 Colorado cruising over Oregon, 79-30, while No. 22 Utah beat Arizona State 71-60.
On Thursday in the quarterfinals, No. 13 Oregon State and Colorado meet at 3 p.m., followed by top-seed and AP No. 2 Stanford meeting Bay Area rival California at 5:30 p.m., AP No. 5 Southern Cal meets Arizona at 9 p.m., and No. 22 Utah and No. 7 UCLA collide at 11:30 p.m.
