The Guru Report: Temple Chasing a Co-First Place Finish in AAC; Schedules For All Conference Tourneys With Starts Thru Sunday

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

A women’s basketball season that has brought a new all-time winningest college coach (Stanford - Tara VanDerveer) with a second (UConn - Geno Auriemma) right on her heels, a new all-time collegiate scorer (Iowa - Caitlin Clark), both categories without regard to gender, upsets galore unless your favorite is No. 1 South Carolina coached by Dawn Staley that went undefeated into conference tournament time again, but with a brand new starting five, is thundering toward a grand finale.

Selection Sunday (March 17) revealing the 68-team NCAA women’s field (8 p.m., ESPN) may be 12 days away but here’s a dirty open secret — it starts today with 19 of 32 conferences holding tourneys contesting for automatic bids to be claimed by early next week with the rest being decided into the following weekend.

But first a quick timeout shout out to the Southern Division of the CACC led by top seed Jefferson (28-1), the No. 3 team in NCAA Division II that won all four quarterfinal games in the conference setting up Holy Family and the Rams in one semifinal with the other being Chestnut Hill and Goldey-Beacom on Saturday at Caldwell with the championship on Sunday.

Except for Goldey-Beacon, the other three all play as units in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League in Hatboro, Pa.

For all things considered, jt was comeback city last weekend, Saint Joseph’s recovering from the midweek home loss to Fordham, winning at Duquesne, finishing in a tie for second and taking the third seed in the Atlantic 10 tourney that gets under way Wednesday in suburban Richmond, the Hawks with a double-bye into Friday’s quarterfinals.

Two weeks ago in the fourth quarter at Cornell Penn was minutes away from a looming end to the Quakers’ Ivy season. But they rallied and then last weekend back-to-back at home in The Palestra they handled Dartmouth and then in a thriller edged Harvard to land the fourth and final seed in the Ivy Madness tourney at Columbia in New York City next Friday and Saturday.

Not to be outdone, Villanova on senior day at home in Finneran Pavilion, in the final day of the regular season, began the fourth quarter down 14 to DePaul.

But in the closing seconds, Lucy Olsen, who finished with 31 points, tied it with a pair of foul shots and then DePaul was called for a travel.

On the ensuing possession, Olsen took a pass from Bella Runyon and beat the clock for a win heading to the Big East tourney.

“It keeps us in the conversation,” Denise Dillon said in terms of life on the NCAA bubble.

La Salle beat Fordham on the road on its last regular season game while Drexel, whose tourney is not till next week, won its last home game.

To avoid overloading since daily recapping will also be necessary, we’ll just address what’s immediately ahead.

Temple Playing for Co-First Place Finish

For the second time in recent games Temple gets to meet another new American Athletic Conference member whose mascot is also an Owl when Florida Atlantic Wednesday visits the Liacouras Center at 7 p.m. (ESPN+).

Who would believe in early January, first place would be on the line but that’s where things are.

The rest of the AAC finished Tuesday night and since nothing would change either way when the tourney gets under way in Fort Worth, Texas, Saturday, the conference released the bracket Tuesday night.

Temple will be a favorite in Wednesday’s game.

In the second season under Diane Richardson, after struggling on a short roster hit by injuries and departures, Temple has one of the top turnarounds in the nation.

If the Owls win, they will finish in a three-way tie for first with Tulsa, which has the one seed, and North Texas, which has the second.

Should they lose, they’re third, so either way they have a three seed and double bye into Monday’s quarterfinals against who emerges from a trio of (6) Charlotte, (11) SMU, or (14) Tulane.

Winning it all, which they must do, earns the NCAA automatic bid. Otherwise they will be in either the new 32-team WBIT run by the NCAA, or the 48-team WNIT.
