The Guru Report: Richmond Wins First A-10 Crown; USC Upsets Stanford in PAC-12 Final; South Carolina Wins SEC to Stay Unbeaten; Hidalgo Leads Notre Dame to ACC Crown

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HENRICO, Va. — It’s a new era for the Atlantic 10 in terms of success in the women’s programs without regard to whether the NCAA committee will apply a stamp on it by extending an at-large or two invite Sunday when the 68-team field and road to Cleveland and the national championship is revealed at 8 p.m. on ESPN.

The newness will be represented by first-time Atlantic Ten champion participant Richmond, which defeated Rhode Island 65-51 here Sunday afternoon in the Henrico Sports & Events Center.

A packed house of 3,089 energized the arena with the local Spiders (29-5) performing like a well-tuned machine that got off to a fast start and never let up.

“The level of confidence that was coming from this group today was unbelievable,” said Richmond coach Aaron Roussell. “It was a combination of us watching film seeing them a little bit and everything to do with how well our team moves and synergy the group plays with.

“I probably shouldn’t share this, maybe regret it later but there was a point in the game I was going to lose it crying just watching them play basketball,” he said.

“The style of basketball those first three or four minutes coming out was like a proud parent, you’re just letting them go.”

Those of us who got to enjoy coming to the area in the heyday of the University of Virginia powerhouse in nearby Charlottesville when Dawn Staley and Tammi Reiss were the best backcourt combo in America were often entertained when Reiss took her turn at the podium during the players part of the postgame pressers.

Now running her own program after being hired several years ago from the staff of Syracuse, Reiss has built the Rams (21-14) into a force like Roussell, but was stop short of themselves becoming first time A-10 champs.

“I thought they were the best team all year, they had championship habits and I thought they were the best team in the tournament, and they were the better team today,” Reiss said.

“I thought we fought in the second half, but I didn’t think we were ready for the first 20 minutes of the ballgame, and that’s where the game was won, especially in the first quarter.

“I was proud of the team, they put up a fight and they didn’t quit.”

Sophomore Maggie Doogan, a graduate of Cardinal O’Hara, whose mom Chrissie coaches that team and starred at La Salle, had 18 points, forward Addie Budnik, named the tournament MVP, had 14 fueled by four-of-eight makes from deep, Siobhan Ryan also scored 14, while Grace Townsend had 13, shooting 6-for-12 while dealing five assists.

Rhode Island’s Tiesha Hyman was 5-for-10 from the field with six rebounds while Dee Dee Davis, a transfer from Manhattan College, scored 11 with eight boards and Maye Toure also had eight boards.

While Saint Joseph’s was unable to complete the goal of a title in the A-10 after an historic season, Richmond has strong dose of Philly individuals besides having landed Doogan away from her home team.

Assistant coach Alex Louin is a former Villanova star, while assistant coach Janine Radice, was a long-time aide at Delaware and was part of the Blue Hens CAA champions during the Elena Delle Donne era.

When you’re on the bubble and don’t win a title in conferences whose events are the first of the two-week run up to the annual Selection Sunday, the longer wait can be nerve wracking as bracketologists pick your team apart showing either why you should get a bid or don’t deserve one.

Richmond will be free from such scrutiny or then what the Spiders seed might be considering that deep runs in the field are all about the matchups.

Underdogs Have Their Day

Almost all of the Power Five conferences finished their tournaments Sunday, with the Big 12 to be concluded by Tuesday.

Southern Cal (2-65), which began the season ranked 21 but upset then-No. 7 Ohio State on opening day, finished in the same manner stunning top-seed and second-ranked Stanford (28-5) in the championship of the soon-to-be dismantled Pac-12.

The defeat likely cost Stanford one of the four overall No. 1 seeds, a fate that also probably be-felled Ohio State, which was also ejected early in the Big Ten tournament, losing to Maryland.

It was the second time the fifth-ranked Trojans (26-5) beat the Cardinal (28-5) but unlike the first time when freshman sensation JuJu Watkins scored 51 on Stanford’s court in Maples Pavilion, she struggled in the game at Las Vegas Sunday.

Not to worry about a group nicknamed by Coach Lindsay Gottlieb, who was an NBA assistant and before that guided Cal to a Final Four, JuJu and the Nerds.

Well, the Nerds made up for Watkins, Harvard transfer McKenzie Forbes scoring 26, while Penn transfer Kayla Padilla scored 13 and non-Ivy player Rayah Marshall had 18 rebounds.

Southern Cal is now considered to replace Stanford with an NCAA No. 1 seed.

The Cardinal’s Cameron Brink had 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Kiki Iriafen scored 18.

It would be ironic if Stanford and Princeton crossed paths in the tournament.

In the Big Ten in Indianapolis, it looked like Nebraska might upset second seed and No. 3 ranked Iowa again but scoring sensation Caitlin Clark had 30 of her 34 points in the second half and the Hawkeyes (29-4) won 94-89 in overtime and now seem poised to also land a No. 1 seed.

The overall No. 1 will be going to Top-ranked and unbeaten South Carolina (32-0), which beat second-seeded and No. 8 LSU (28-5), the defending national champion, 79-72 a day after Kamilla Cardoso took her second three-point shot in her career — the other as a freshman at Syracuse— and turned back Tennessee at the buzzer in the SEC semifinal game.

The title contest with the Tigers was marred with both benches mixing it up near the finish.

Freshman MiLaysia Fulwiley had a career-high 24 points for the Gamecocks.

Cardoso was one of the players ejected from the game by the officials.

Dawn Staley’s squad has beaten LSU16 straight times and won the SEC title eight of the past 10 seasons.

DePaul transfer Aneesah Morrow had 19 points for the Tigers, while Angel Reese had 15 points and 13 rebounds.

In the Big East semifinals, No. 9 UConn (28-5) got 27 points from Paige Bueckers and 12 rebounds in a 58-29 win over Marquette in which Aaliyah Edwards was sidelined with a broken nose.

Sixth-seeded Georgetown (22-10) in the other semifinal at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., upset No. 21 Creighton 55-46 on a day that was the birthday of former Hoyas coach Tasha Butts, who was hired in the offseason but then succumbed to breast cancer in October.

The Hoyas and Huskies will meet Monday night for the title.

In the American, third-seeded Temple, which shared the regular season title with Tulsa and North Texas, will meet No. 14 Tulane (12-19) in a quarterfinal game Monday night in Fort Worth Texas, the Green Wave upsetting 11th seed SMU and sixth-seed Charlotte in early rounds over the weekend.

South Jersey’s Hannah Hidalgo had 22 points and fourth seed and 14th-ranked Notre Dame (26-6) upset No. 10 North Carolina State 55-51 to win the Atlantic Coast Conference in Greensboro, N.C. over the second seed.

Hidalgo was named the MVP.
