Sun/Draft Team-3 Gets First Season Win Upsetting Maroon/D-3 Arcadia in Play-In Round to Set-Up Quarterfinals Field in Philly/Suburban Women’s Summer League

By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. — After going winless during the regular season at 0-8, Sun (Draft Team-3), the 9th seed, upset No. 8 Maroon (D3-Arcadia) 57-49 Thursday night in the single-game, play-in, opening round of the playoffs in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Summer Basketball League, earning the final spot in Tuesday’s quarterfinals at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

Sun, one of three draft teams, those without a majority roster from a D-2 or D-3 winter team, had a few narrow losses in recent weeks. The team does have a large representation from Division Two Kutztown.

The winners will meet top seed and unbeaten Black/D2-Jefferson at 6:30 p.m. on Court 1.

Ironically, the two did not meet during the nine-week season, Sun being one of two teams across the schedule forced to forfeit due to lack of players at tip time.

When Thursday’s playoff foes met during the season in late June before the league went dark for the July 4th holiday week, Maroon pulled out a narrow 58-55 win, it’s sole triumph.

The rest of Tuesday’s slate has 3-seed Purple (D2-West Chester) (6-2) meeting 6-seed Kelly Green (Draft Team-1) (3-5) in the other 6:30 p.m. game on Court 2.

The two teams just met this week during Tuesday’s regular season final four-game slate, Purple pulling out a narrow 67-66 victory.

The 7:45 p.m. doubleheader nightcaps Tuesday has 2-seed Sky Blue (D2-Holy Family) (7-1) playing 7-seed Royal Blue (D-3 Cabrini) (2-6) on Court 1, while 4-seed Red (D2-Chestnut Hill) (5-3) will meet 5-seed Pink (Draft Team-2) (4-4) on Court 2.

Sky Blue narrowly lost on opening night in overtime in mid-June to Black, it’s winter rival in the South Division of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), and then went on to win the rest of the way and was the last of the nine teams to have a bye Tuesday.

In their season meeting, Sky Blue easily won 80-45.

In terms of Cabrini, the quarterfinal game on Tuesday night is notable because the school recently announced it is closing shop next spring, the campus being bought by Villanova.

However, with players entering the portal, Cabrini may not be able to field a team this winter, so a loss could be the last togetherness as undergrads.

During the season in their other meeting, Red beat Pink 67-51.

Winners Tuesday advance to next Thursday’s semifinals doubleheader on Court 1 at 6:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m., pairings potentially subject to a re-seed pending the four outcomes.

The championship is Tuesday, August 1, at 7 p.m., on Court 1 being live streamed by Ari Bluestein’s Sports Fan Base Network, the link will appear here next week.

Here’s Bob with the Sun/Maroon details and per tradition right under that we’ll have the previously posted details of the season matchups of the Tuesday quarterfinals opponents.

9  Sun  57   #8  Maroon 49

Casey Remolde scored half of her team’s 20 points in the fourth quarter as the ninth-seeded Team Sun pulled away in the final period to earn a 57-49 win over eighth-seed Team Maroon (D3-Arcadia University) in the play-in game Thursday night at Kelly Bolish Gym.

Sun will advance to the quarterfinal round on Tuesday, July 25 where they will face top seed Black (D2-Jefferson University.)

Mia Stock (Bloomsburg ’27) led Sun with 17 points.  Casey Remolde (Kutztown ’25) added 14 while Allie Sillo (Illinois Tech ’25) chipped in ten.

Hannah Rhoads led Maroon with 17 points and was joined in double figures by Scarlett Glasser-Nehls who chipped in 13.  Rhoads and Glasser-Nehls are both entering their senior year at Arcadia.

Sun led by five entering the final period but a small min-rally from Maroon via baskets from Glasser-Nehls, Rhoads and Dayna Balasa, an Arcadia junior, closed the gap to two, 40-38.

Casey Remolde then started a string of nine straight points for the Sun squad with three straight layups.  Shannon Remolde (Kutztown ’25) added a free throw and Stock scored on a layup to give Sun a 49-38 lead with around 5:30 remaining.

Rhoads scored Maroon’s next five points as they twice pulled within eight at 51-43.

Stock had a layup with three minutes left and Casey Remolde followed with her fourth basket of the quarter, giving Sun their biggest lead at 55-43 with 2:30 left.  Maroon again cut the lead to eight in the final 90 seconds but that would be as close as they would get.

Sun had opened the game with seven straight points and Maroon countered with seven of their own to even the score.

A Shannon Remolde three-ball broke the deadlock as Sun took the three-point advantage into the second quarter.

Maroon opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 15-12.

Sun battled back with a 7-3 spurt to retake the lead at 19-18, but Maroon scored four of the next six points to reclaim a one-point advantage.

Abigail Marino (Illinois Institute ’27) sank a long three-pointer and Sillo added another two to give Sun back the lead 26-22 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Sun held Maroon scoreless for the first 4:38 and extended their lead to 31-22.

Maroon followed with a 10-3 run to pull back within two 34-32 with Rhoads scoring six of the ten points.

Sillo sank a three-pointer in the final minute to push Sun’s lead to five 37-32, setting the stage for the final period.

Quarterfinals Foes’ Season’s Meetings

Black 2, Sun 0 – Forfeit

Sun was unable to field a team, thus losing instantly to the eventual regular season unbeaten champs.

Purple 67 Kelly Green 66

Leah Johnson’s basket with just under 30 seconds left allowed team Purple (D2-West Chester University) to clinch the #3 seed for the upcoming Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer league playoffs as they held off Team Kelly Green with a 67-66 win.

Purple finishes the regular season with a 6-2 record.  Kelly Green finishes with a 3-5 mark and will be the #6 seed in the upcoming playoffs.  The two teams will face each other again next week in the quarterfinal round.

Alexa Abbonizio led Purple with 24 points while Johnson had 13 points.  Rachel Conran chipped in 12 for the victors.

Kelly Green placed five players in double figures led by Sydney Blum’s (College of New Jersey ’23) 16 points.  Dana Bandurick (Swarthmore ’24) added 14 while Ally Trebelev (Franklin and Marshall ’25) scored 11.  Natalie Kolb (Franklin and Marshall ’24) and Reagan Chrencik (Gettysburg ’27) chipped in ten apiece.

A back and forth first quarter saw five lead changes before Purple closed out the period with a 7-3 run to take a 15-12 lead.

Baskets from Kyla Glasser-Hyman and Abbonizio increased Purple’s lead to 19-12 before Kelly Green came roaring back, exploding with a 22-5 run to take 34-24 lead late in the quarter and maintaining the double-digit advantage to hold a 39-29 lead at halftime.

Abbonizio put the burden of the deficit her team faced on her shoulders in the third quarter, scoring 14 of her team’s 20 points as Purple rallied to tie the game at 49-49 heading into the final period.

Morgan Warley pulled Purple within two 46-44 before Blum sank a three-point basket to extend her team’s lead back to five.

Conran added a basket and Abbonizio sank a three-ball in the final seconds to tie the game.

Bandurick opened the fourth quarter with a layup to break the tie before Conran sank a three-point to give Purple their first lead 52-51 since midway through the second quarter Johnson then took over, scoring five of Purple’s next seven points as they extended their lead to 59-53.

Kelly continued to stay close as the quarter wore on, and used a 6-0 run, capped by a Kolb basket to tie the game at 63-63.

Conran broke the tie with a pair of free throws with just over a minute left before Blum sank her fourth three pointer of the game with 40 seconds left to put Kelly on top 66-65.

Johnson then drove to the hoop and scored again, her 11th point of the quarter with just under 30 seconds left to give Purple the lead.

Purple then held off three attempts by Kelly Green to score the game winner as they hung on for a one point win.

Sky Blue 80 Royal Blue 45

In the only lopsided scoring game of the night, Sky Blue (D2-holy Family University) kept place with league leading Black with an 80-45 win over Team Royal Blue (D3-Cabrini University).

Sky Blue improves to 6-1 and remains ½ game behind first place black, the only team to defeat them. Royal Blue falls to 1-6 on the season and sits in eighth place.

Kara Meredith (17 points), Lindsay Tretter (14 points) and Carolyn Prevost (12 points) led Sky Blue.  Miranda Liebtag was the only Royal Blue player in double figures with 15 points.

Sky led virtually the entire game except for a brief 2-2 tie early in the opening quarter.    The score remained close for much of the first five minutes before Sky took control of the contest with a 16-3 run to close out the quarter and take a 24-9 lead.

A basket from Dakota Schultice to open the second quarter increased Sky’s lead to 26-9.  Liebtag’s three-ball closed the gap to 13 at 30-17 but Sky followed with a 10-2 spurt to lead 40-19 at the half.

Royal opened the third quarter with an 11-5 run highlighted with a three-point basket from Tamia Wessels and a solid two pointer form Katie Rodriguez to pull within 15, 45-30.  The two teams exchanged three point baskets before Sky closed out the quarter on a 9-2 run to lead 57-35.

Sky outscored Royal 23-10 in the fourth quarter as they cruised to the win.

Red 67   Pink 51

Team Red (D2-Chestnut Hill College) put three players in double figures and had all seven team members score at least six points as they defeated team Pink (alumni players) 67-51 in the early game Thursday night on court one.

Red improves to 3-1 and sits just ½ game behind league leaders Purple, who was idle on Thursday and Black, who earned a forfeit win over Team Sun when Sun could not field five players.

Pink drops to 1-2 and sits in sixth place at the midway point of the regular season.

Lindsey Lane led the Red team with 14 points while Siobhan Boylan and Bridie McCann scored 11 and ten respectively.

Pink’s Jen Kremp (USciences grad) led all players with 18 points while Kate Connolly (Drexel grad) added 13.

Three lead changes in the first five minutes saw Pink take an early 8-6 lead.

Bri Rider (eight points) then hit the first of nine three-point baskets by the Red squad, starting a 14-0 flourish that carried into the second quarter, giving Red a 20-8 lead.

Lane had six of the 14 points and McCann capped the run with a three-pointer.

Pink then ran off 11 straight points to pull within one, 20-19.

Kremp and Vanessa Amsinger (Colorado College grad) capped the run with three point buckets. Avery White’s (nine points) basket stopped the run as Red followed White’s bucket with an 11-2 spurt to lead 33-22 at the half.

Lauren Crim (Chestnut Hill grad) and Kremp opened the third quarter scoring and Pink added two more three-point baskets to close within three 36-33.

Another run by Red, this one a 10-2 spurt, again gave the Red team a double digit lead 46-35.

A basket from Kremp and a traditional three-point play from Connolly brought Pink within six 46-40 heading into the final quarter.

Eleven straight points by Red in the fourth quarter, highlighted by two straight three-balls from Kait Carter (nine points) and two more baskets from Lane produced their biggest lead of the game at 62-42.

Pink would get no closer than 14 points the rest of the way as Red secured their third win of the summer league.
