Forfeit Enables Team Black (Jefferson) to Move to First Place Tie With Purple (West Chester) in Philly Women’s Summer League
By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru
HATBORO, Pa. – One night after being dropped a half-game off the pace serving a bye while Team Purple (D2-West Chester) moved in front, winning the battle of the other two unbeatens over Team Red (D2-Chestnut Hill), Team Black (D2-Jefferson) erased that standings deficit in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’ Summer Basketball League Thursday without seeing action at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.
Scheduled to play decided underdog Team Sun (Draft Team-3) in one of the two late games in the nine-team league, Team Black moved into the winner’s circle, courtesy of a 2-0 forfeit when the opposition only had four players appear.
Purple, meanwhile, was idle, serving its bye.
Despite the early pecking order, the standings suggest it’s going to take a while before the upper seeding slots for the playoffs late next month are determined.
Meanwhile among the other three games that were played, a battle of two winless teams enabled Royal Blue (D3-Cabrini) to moved up to seventh place at 1-3 off a 61-48 triumph over Team Maroon (D3-Arcadia).
Team Red and Sky Blue (D2-Holy Family) were able to stay on the heels of the leaders a half-game behind tied for third at 3-1 winning their games.
Red beat the Pink/Draft Team-3 group 67-51, although Jen Kremp, a ’22 grad of the former USciences squad fired five 3-pointers on the way to 18 for Pink, registering the night’s top performance.
Sky Blue bested Kelly Green (Draft Team 1) 50-41, dropping the opponents to fifth at 2-2 prior to next serving a bye this Tuesday.
The rest of the standings off the results has Pink (1-2) in sixth place in front of Royal Blue (1-2) followed by Sun (0-3) and Maroon (0-4).
Moving over the halfway point on Tuesday, week three before going idle July 4th week, the highlight game has Purple (3-0) meeting Sky Blue (3-1) in one of the two early games at 6:30 p.m. on Court 2.
Black meets Maroon at 6:30 p.m. in the other early game.
The 7:45 p.m. nightcaps have Sun (0-3) meeting Pink (1-2) on Court 1 while Red (3-1) plays Royal Blue (1-3) on Court 2.
Now here’s Bob with the detailed recaps followed by the scoreboard.
Recaps
Royal Blue 61 Maroon 48
Team Royal Blue (D3-Cabrini University) earned their first win of the summer league season in the late game Thursday night on court one, defeating Team Maroon (D3-Arcadia University) 61-44.
Royal is now 1-3 on the season while Arcadia drops to 0-4.
The Royal squad placed three players in double figures led by Miranda Liebtag’s 14 points. Camryn Lexow and Tamia Wessels added 12 points apiece.
Maroon was paced by Hanna Rhoads who finished the game with 14 points and Tyra Roberts who had ten.
Royal never trailed in the contest and after two ties in the opening minutes, ran off 12 straight points to take a 16-4 lead, with Lexow and Emma Stanfield scoring four points apiece during the run.
A Rhoads’ three-ball cut the lead to 16-9 before Wessels scored the final basket of the quarter.
The second quarter opened with an 8-0 run by Royal to increase their lead to 26-9. Maroon countered with an 11-2 run of their own to cut the Royal lead back to nine 28-19 late in the quarter.
Dayna Balasa’s three-point basket closed the gap to seven 30-23 by halftime.
Royal held Maroon to just two field goals and a free throw in the third quarter, outscoring their opponent 12-5 to take a 42-28 lead heading into the final quarter.
Baskets by Rhoads and Scarlett Glasser-Nehls cut the Royal lead to 11, 44-33 early in the fourth quarter, but Maroon could not put together a substantial run to cut into the lead as the Royal squad expanded the advantage over the next six+ minutes with a 15-8 uprising to lead 59-41.
Liebtag had eight of her team-high 14 points in the final spurt by the Royal squad.
Rhoads and Glasser-Nehls would again score back-to-back baskets in the final minute to make the final result 61-48.
Red 67 Pink 51
Team Red (D2-Chestnut Hill College) put three players in double figures and had all seven team members score at least six points as they defeated team Pink (alumni players) 67-51 in the early game Thursday night on court one.
Red improves to 3-1 and sits just ½ game behind league leaders Purple, who was idle on Thursday and Black, who earned a forfeit win over Team Sun when Sun could not field five players.
Pink drops to 1-2 and sits in sixth place at the midway point of the regular season.
Lindsey Lane led the Red team with 14 points while Siobhan Boylan and Bridie McCann scored 11 and ten respectively.
Pink’s Jen Kremp (USciences grad) led all players with 18 points while Kate Connolly (Drexel grad) added 13.
Three lead changes in the first five minutes saw Pink take an early 8-6 lead.
Bri Rider (eight points) then hit the first of nine three-point baskets by the Red squad, starting a 14-0 flourish that carried into the second quarter, giving Red a 20-8 lead.
Lane had six of the 14 points and McCann capped the run with a three-pointer.
Pink then ran off 11 straight points to pull within one, 20-19.
Kremp and Vanessa Amsinger (Colorado College grad) capped the run with three point buckets. Avery White’s (nine points) basket stopped the run as Red followed White’s bucket with an 11-2 spurt to lead 33-22 at the half.
Lauren Crim (Chestnut Hill grad) and Kremp opened the third quarter scoring and Pink added two more three-point baskets to close within three 36-33.
Another run by Red, this one a 10-2 spurt, again gave the Red team a double digit lead 46-35.
A basket from Kremp and a traditional three-point play from Connolly brought Pink within six 46-40 heading into the final quarter.
Eleven straight points by Red in the fourth quarter, highlighted by two straight three-balls from Kait Carter (nine points) and two more baskets from Lane produced their biggest lead of the game at 62-42.
Pink would get no closer than 14 points the rest of the way as Red secured their third win of the summer league.
Sky Blue 50 Kelly Green 41
Team Sky Blue (D2-Holy Family University) used a dominant third quarter, overcoming a halftime deficit as they kept pace with the league leaders with a 50-41 win over team Kelly Green in the second early game on Court two.
Sky Blue improves to 3-1 and sits in a tie for third place with Team Red, ½ game behind league leaders Purple and Black (both 3-0).
Kelly Green falls to 2-2 and currently sits in fifth place.
Lindsey Tretter led Sky Blue with ten points while Taylor Hinkle and Carolyn Prevost chipped in eight apiece. Dana Bandurick led Kelly Green with 11.
Kelly Green held a slim 18-16 lead after the first two quarters before Sky Blue took command of the game in the third quarter.
Tretter opened the third quarter with a three-point basket, giving Sky blue their first lead of the game at 19-18.
Following Tretter’s score, Sky went on a 15-0 run to forge ahead 34-19.
Hinkle scored six of her eight points during the run while Jessica Riepe (seven points) had four. Kelly Green was held without a field goal until Sydney Blum (nine points) scored in the final minute of the quarter as Sky took a 34-21 lead into the final period.
Sabrina Vlahovic scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter with three three-point baskets as Kelly Green closed within eight points twice during the period and got as close as seven at 39-32.
Sky blue used an 11-5 run to take a 50-37 lead late in the quarter before Kelly scored the final four points to pull within single digits as the final buzzer sounded, 50-41.
Black defeats Sun via forfeit
