The Guru Report: Washington Scores 32 As Drexel Snaps Losing Streak Triumphing at Dartmouth

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

There was only one game, a local listing, on the Guru radar schedule, such as the occurrence during finals and if one wants to call it a pre-Penn State court prepare, Drexel passed it easily Tuesday afternoon with a 64-49 win at Dartmouth in the Big Green’s Ledee Arena in Hanover, N.H.

The non-conference outcome earned a split on a two-game road trip through Ivy country that began with a narrow loss in overtime at Yale Sunday. It also stopped a two-game slid for the Dragons (6-3) that previously included a wider setback at Saint Joseph’s.

Keishana Washington was the only person in double figures but that was plenty scoring 32 points shooting 13-for-25 from the field while she and Maura Hendrixson each dealt five assists.

Freshman Kylie Lavelle remained sidelined with an injury, her situation being called day to day.

Victoria Page scored 22 for Dartmouth (2-8) while Mia Curtis scored 13 and the duo each connected on three shots from beyond the arc.

Washington finished with 1,758 career points moving into third place on the all-time Drexel list past Bailey Greenberg and her production made her the first Dragon to score 30 or more points five times before the seasonal schedule moves into the New Year.

Next up is Sunday’s visit from Penn State at 2 p.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, the first local visit in quite a while from the Lady Lions, who always drew big crowds back in the day when they were in the Atlantic Ten. The squad is currently 8-3.

Drexel is giving Pepsi/Drexel beanies away to the first 500 fans.

As for the rest of the week among the local group, Princeton goes up the road to Rutgers Thursday at 7 p.m.; Temple Friday night at 7 hosts Duquesne, a team from Pittsburgh the Owls played regularly when both were A-10 schools.

On Saturday La Salle at 2 p.m. visits South Florida, the American Athletic Conference favorite, while Rider at 1 p.m. begins Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Canisius.

Besides Sunday’s Drexel game, No. 25 Villanova plays No. 14 Iowa State at 3:30 p.m. (ESPN2) at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., on a Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase Doubleheader with No. 9 Connecticut meeting Florida State at 1 p.m. (ESPN); Delaware will be at Lehigh at 2 p.m., while at the same time Rutgers hosts New Orleans.
