Womhoops Guru

Mel Greenberg covered college and professional women’s basketball for the Philadelphia Inquirer, where he worked for 40 plus years. Greenberg pioneered national coverage of the game, including the original Top 25 women's college poll. His knowledge has earned him nicknames such as "The Guru" and "The Godfather," as well as induction into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007.

3 p.m. ESPN2 No. 1 North Carolina State vs. No.8 South Florida. The Wolfpack continue their season of history with their No. 1 seed playing  South Florida with their first conference title now that Connecticut is no longer in the American Athletic Conference.

3:30 p.m. ESPNU No. 4 Kentucky vs. No. 5 Iowa. It’s one of the nation’s top players in Rhyne Howard on the Wildcats of the SEC vs one of the nation’s top freshmen in Caitlin Clark of the Hawkeyes of the Big Ten.

5 p.m. ESPN2 No. 3 Tennessee vs. No. 6 Michigan. Two rebuilders in Kellie Harper with the Lady Vols at her alma mater going against Kim Barnes Arico with the Wolverines.

5:30 p.m. ESPNU No. 4 West Virginia vs. No. 5 Georgia Tech. The Mountaineers, runnersup in the Big 12, got off to an easy start playing Lehigh of the Patriot League but the Yellow Jackets had to go into overtime to put away Stephen F. Austin of the Southland.

Early Evening

7 p.m. ESPN No. 1 South Carolina vs. No. 8 Oregon State. The Gamecocks with Aliyah Boston under Dawn Staley are flying high. In day one with this entire group, no one suffered upsets. Oregon State took down a few coming down the stretch of the PAC-12 race.

7 p.m. ESPN2 No. 2 Baylor vs. No. 7 Virginia Tech. Another chance to look at the tehcnical defending champions of Baylor under Kim Mulkey, who in 2019 edged then-defending champions Notre Dame. Will they make a second rapid start out of the gate? Virginia Tech had a breakthrough year and upset North Carolina State.

Late Evening

9 p.m. ESPN No. 1 Connecticut vs. No. 8 Syracuse. Not a team Geno Auriemma, who celebrates his 67th birthday today was interested in playing, though he’ll still be at home one more day of quarantine off a positive test of the coronavirus. Longtime associate head coach Chris Dailey is 11-0 as a fill-in for her boss. Another of the nation’s top freshman in Paige Bueckers. 

9 p.m. ESPN2 No. 1 Stanford vs. No. 8 Oklahoma State. Channel switching may be in order for a while with two No. 1 seeds playing at the same time. The Cardinal are a balanced outfit. Also in Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer (1,120) , the all-time winningest coach among Division I women with Auriemma running a close second at 1,116.
