Guru's Ivy WBB Overniter: These Are The Ties That Will Unbind And Then Some

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

As we come down the stretch with Penn two lengths in front of Princeton and three in front of Harvard, all owning three of the four berths in the New Ivy tournament for men and women, and Cornell, Yale and Brown fighting for the last spot in the women's event, here's all you have to know for the last weekend and a day as sent to the Guru from the league office.

But first at the top the Guru will list current standings and the schedule before gtting into the thick of it.

Determining the Seeds and the Fourth Qualifier

Top Seed

Penn controls its destiny to win the title; if Quakers win both games this weekend, they clinch.

If Quakers go 0-2, and Princeton goes 2-0, then both Quakers and Tigers would be 10-3, and the title would come down to the last game of the season.

If Penn goes 1-1, and Princeton goes 2-0, then Quakers would be 11-2 and Tigers would be 10-3, and the top seed would come down to the last game of the season. If Princeton wins that game to make both teams 11-3, we would have to wait to see which team Penn beats this weekend to determine the tiebreaker (since it could come down to record vs. Harvard).

If Penn goes 1-1, and Princeton goes 1-1, then Quakers would be 11-2 and Tigers would be 9-4, giving the outright title to Penn.

If Penn goes 0-2, and Princeton goes 1-1, then the Quakers would be 10-3 and Princeton would be 9-4, with the top seed coming down to the last game of the season. If Princeton wins that game to make both teams 10-4, we would have to wait to see which team Princeton beats this weekend to determine the tiebreaker (since it could come down to record vs. Harvard).

If both Penn and Princeton go 0-2, then Penn would be 10-3, Princeton would be 8-5, and Quakers would clinch outright title. At that point it could set up potentially a three-way tie for second place with Princeton, Harvard and Cornell.

Fourth Qualifier

If Cornell goes 2-0 it clinches fourth spot.

If Cornell goes 1-1 with a win over Brown and loss to Yale, and Yale beats Columbia to go 2-0 on the week, both Cornell and Yale would be 7-7 overall and 1-1 against each other. Tiebreaker would go to record against teams outside of the tie starting with the top of the standings. Yale is 1-1 against Penn, while Cornell is 0-2, so Yale would get the tiebreaker. If Princeton is in first-place, then Cornell would get the tiebreaker thanks to its win over the Tigers.

If Cornell goes 1-1 with a win over Brown and loss to Yale, and Columbia beats Yale, Cornell would go (Cornell 7-7, Brown 6-8, Yale 6-8).

If Cornell goes 1-1 with a win over Yale and loss to Brown, and Brown beats Columbia to go 2-0 on the week, both Cornell and Brown would be 7-7 overall and 1-1 against each other. Tiebreaker would go to record against teams outside of the tie starting with the top of the standings and going to the bottom. Both teams are 0-2 against Penn and 1-1 against Princeton. The tiebreaker would be Harvard, as Cornell is 1-1 against the Crimson and Brown is 0-2. Harvard would be the tiebreaker in this scenario no matter what happens in the standings between Penn and Princeton.

If Cornell goes 1-1 with a win over Yale and loss to Brown, and Columbia beats Brown, Cornell would go (Cornell 7-7, Brown 6-8, Yale 6-8).

If Cornell loses both games to finish 6-8, and Brown and Yale both sweep the weekend to finish 7-7, then first tiebreaker between Brown and Yale is head-to-head, which is split. Next tiebreaker is record against teams outside the tie starting with the top of the standings and going to the bottom. Yale is 1-1 against Penn and Brown is 0-2, so if Penn is in first place Yale gets the edge. If Princeton is in first place, Brown would get the edge thanks to its wins over the Tigers.

If Cornell loses both games AND Brown wins both games AND Yale splits, Bears get fourth spot (Brown 7-7, Cornell 6-8, Yale 6-8).

If Cornell loses both games AND Yale wins both games AND Brown splits, Bulldogs get fourth spot (Yale 7-7, Cornell 6-8, Brown 6-8).

If Cornell loses both games, and Brown and Yale are both swept at Columbia, then all three teams would finish at 6-8. Brown would get the fourth spot thanks to its 3-1 record against Cornell and Yale (Yale 2-2, Cornell 1-3).
