Guru College Report: First USBWA Weekly Awards Coming Tuesday
By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru
Either late morning or early afternoon as soon as the links from central control are ready the first Anne Meyers-Drysdale women's national player of the week will be announced from the United States Basketball Writers Association.
Eligible players for consideration must first be a conference player of the week selection.
Additionally, this season will see the launch of the national freshman of the week award. A little wrinkle here on criteria. Being a conference freshman of the week like the national player of the week will merit strong consideration.
However, the Guru noticed when underrgoing deliberations on Monday that not every conference makes a freshman/rookie pick. So to be all inclusive the Guru says if such conference does not -partake in that exercise the women's media rep or any media reps of subsequent member schools are invited to recommend a candidate upon the conclusion of the schedule through Sundays.

Local Honors
Speaking of weekly tributes, Princeton's Blake Dietrick, as forecasted in the Guru's blog chronicling the Tigers' win over Georgetown, was named the Ivy player of the week giving Princeton a 4-for-4 domination in having four straight honors out of the Ivies.
Also as thought likely through Sunday's game, La Salle's current win streak paid off again for the Explorers with Alicia Cropper being named the Big Five women's player of the week.
Meanwhile, having exrtra blossomed through last Thursday's tough double overtime loss to North Carolina, senior Yolanda Laney of Rutgers was named the Big Ten player of the week, the first Scarlet Knight to capture the honor in Rutgers' initial season in the conference.
And from elsewhere but with a local makes good claim, DePaul's Brittany Hrynko was named the Big East player of the week.
So How Is Your RPI
This is the time the Guru begins sneaking a look at the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) rankings that become part of the mix used by the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Committee to pick the at-large teams and seed the 64-team field.
It is early and because of that the numbers are still very volatile but they are shaping up to where they will land on the non-conference portion of the index since at the moment because of scheduling they are basically one and the same.
So in terms of the local 10-team PhilahoopsW group here is the daily NCAA report -- this season is the first time the NCAA is going daily in public -- and the Monday readout of RPIratings.com, which also indicates the strength of schedule.

Looking Ahead
Surving with another narrow Big Five win Sunday over Villanova to go with the overtime win over Temple last month, the defending City Series champion Saint Joseph's Hawks get right back in the caldron at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at The Palestra where they visit Penn on the front part of a doubleheader prior to the Quakers men's game.
A win makes Saint Joseph's 3-0 and the Hawks would clinch a tie for first since everyone else already has at least one loss and the only game left woiuld be one of the La Salle Atlantic 10 games later down the road.
However, if Penn wins, it throws things wide open and the Quakers who were only several points away from an unprecedented title last season before going on to Ivy glory would have a chance to either win outright or tie for the crown.
Meanwhile in the only other game on the card Tuesday involving locals, Princeton with the past start ever among Ivy schools will visit Michigan in Ann Arbor.
On Wednesday, Rutgers visits Temple at 6 p.m. in McGonigle Hall in what is now back to a nonconference game with the Scarlet Knights having left The American foir the Big Ten.
Penn State seeking a second straight win is at Hartford the same night.
With finals week having everyone in the classroom, there are no local D-1 games in the area until Saturday so if any of you D-2 or D-3 folks want a Guru visit and are reading this, flick the awareness button.
Saturday Bighamton visits Princeton.
On Sunday Tennessee is at Rutgers, Florida State is at Temple, Rider is at Penn State, Drexel is at Pittsburgh, and, home in the Pavilion at last, Villanova at 7:30 p.m. hosts La Salle and because of the time start offers a chance for local fans to plan a day-night doubleheader.
OK That's it for now. The Guru will be tweeting from The Palestra and will tweet out the USBWA award winners when the links come down.
