Philly Summer League: Kelly Green Upsets Orange and Survives 6-Way Tie to Make Playoffs

By Mel Greenberg

HATBORO, Pa. --
Down to the final seconds for the entire slate of the regular season, Kelly Green slipped past Orange in a 54-50 upset Tuesday night that helped force a six-way tie for fifth and a two-way tie for third in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women's NCAA Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades in Lower Bucks County.

Two forfeits also occurred, Royal Blue, which went winless during the 12-game schedule that each team play, gave favored Hunter Blue (7-5) a slot in the upper part of the standings because players from Stevens Tech on Royal Blue are spending the week in St. John's Island, S.C. volunteering for Habitat for Humanity.

And when the required amount of players fell short for Purple, then Pink (6-6), also known as Division II University of the Sciences of Philadelphia, had itself an upset through a forfeit win to get into the big logjam, only to lose out with Purple (6-6) after the tiebreaking procedure was done.

Seven forfeit games occured across the summer.

On the other hand Kelly Green's win which got them into the mix also took them into the mix and a No. 7 seed after everything was determined to complete a comeback from early season adversity when they had to forfeit two games since the Division I players in the league had yet to become eligible due to a snafu involving the NCAA certifying process.

Orange (6-6) survived the upset to become the last of the eight-team field to qualify.

Kelly Green wasn't the only team that rallied.

Longtime commissioner David Kessler, who was sidelined at the outset due to hip replacement surgery when play got under way in late June made it to the gym for the first time this season without needing anyone to drive him from his recently acquired new home in North Wales.

Black, also known as Division II Philadelphia University, dropped into the big gridlock when it fell to favored White (10-2), also known as Division II West Chester 67-53, which had previously wrapped up the second seed.

Earlier in the day, longtime West Chester coach Diedre Kane announced her retirement at a press conference after a career that spanned 27 years.

Black, meanwhile, survived the math to make the field.

Sky Blue (7-5) held up its favorite role in Tuesday's action and eliminated Navy Blue (5-7) from playoff contention to gain the third seed, dropping Hunter Green to fourth off a head-to-head win during the season.

In the only game that reduced to an exhibition of sorts, Gold (11-1), which had already clinched the top seed, easily defeated Red, 82-44, to gain the top of the standings all alone.

Red (2-10) had been previously eliminated.

Three players during the night reached the 20-or-more points plateau, with Gold's Ashley Wood of Division II Kutztown scoring 33 points in her first 20-plus effort to land just behind the 35 points Saint Joseph's junior Sarah Fairbanks scored in a win over Orange on July 17.

Two players returned to the honor roll with incoming freshman Chelsea Woods scoring 22 points for Navy Blue in its loss to Sky Blue to mark a league-best six-time appearance on the list.

And it was also another return for Philadelphia University senior Najah Jacobs, a Central High graduate, as she scored 23 points for Black in its loss to White.

Setting the Seeds

Here is the way the seeds quickly got determined despite the complexity of the finish and now you know why the Guru keeps that running team vs. opposition grid all summer.

As mentioned Gold with a league-best 11-1, being upset along the way by Pink, got the top seed, while White at 9-2 was second.

And to also repeat, Sky Blue and Hunter Green each finished with the next best marks at 7-5 and Sky Blue got the third seed off its head-to-head win over Hunter Green, which was placed fourth.

Then came the great tie-up with six teams: Orange, Kelly Green, Black, Purple, Maroon, and Pink tied at 6-6.

So the first move was to see how they did against each other within their group over five games.

Black was 4-1 to quickly get the fifth seed and Maroon was 3-2 to land sixth.

That left four teams, Orange, Kelly Green, Purple, and Pink, two of which needing to be eliminated, knotted at 2-3.

So the four were placed together to see how each of them did within their own three-game round-robin.

Kelly Green and Orange emerged at 2-1 to fill the remaining playoff spots with Kelly Green seventh and Orange eighth off the Tuesday result.

To complete the rest of the standings among the also-rans, Pink and Purple were 1-2 and the Pink win Tuesday by the forfeit gave it ninth over 10th place Purple.

Then Navy Blue (5-7) after its loss Tuesday was all alone in 11th while Red (2-10) was alone in 12th, and Royal Blue in 13th.

Setting The Quarterfinals

Though the schedule is listed way below, here are the matchups for Thursday's quarterfinals from which four will move to Tuesday's semifinals and then the survivors will play a week from Thursday for the championship.

At 7 p.m. on Court 1, Gold, the top seed, meets No. 8 Orange for the second time after Gold produced a 79-68 win in their earlier meeting.

At the same time on Court 2, Sky Blue, the third seed, will meet No. 6 Maroon. In their earlier meeting Sky Blue came through with a narrow 52-47 victory.

At 8 p.m., on Court 1, No. 2 White meets No. 7 Kelly Green after a romp in their earlier meeting by White, which won 99-44.

Wrapping up the round at the same time on Court 2, No. 5 Black and No. 4 Hunter Green meet with Hunter Green having taken the first confrontation 51-43.

Tuesday Recaps

Pink 2, Purple 0 -- Pink wins forfeit when a shortage of Purple players occurred by the early games deadline.

Hunter Green 2, Royal Blue 0 -- Likewise Royal Blue had already declared itself to be the loser due to lack of players, making it the second straight forfeit setback.

Gold 82, Red 44 -- In the game that was a mere formality, though an upset would have caused the regular season title to be shared with White, Gold got ready for the postseaon as Ashley Wood, as mentioned, the graduate of Spring-Ford High, scored 33 points, while Darby Festa, a Division III Haverford sophomore out of Cherry Hill East in South Jersey, and Delaware sophomore Stephanie Leon each scored 15 points.

Red got 15 points each from Tuga Goff, a Division III Rosemont sophomore out of Upper Dublin, and Calypso Carty, a Utica College sophomore from CentraL Bucks West, who got all her points off five 3-pointers.

White 67, Black 53 -- Leading the way for the West Chester bunch was Dallas Ely, a junior, who scored 15 points, Victoria Smick, a sophomore who scored 14, Mariah Powell, a senior from Rustin High near the university who scored 13, and Jasmen Clark, a junior, who scored 12.

As mentioned, Najah Jacobs poured down 23 points, helpedby three treys and 4-for-4 from the line, while Jeas Kamninski, an incoming freshman from Archbishop Wood, scored nine points.

Kelly Green 54, Orange 50 -- In the big win, Maureen Leahy for coach Ted Hagedorn's group scored 14 points by the product of Cardinal O'Hara who is a junior at Bryant, while Vicki Tumasz, who is heading from North Penn to Shippesnburg, again starred as a late roster arrival with 12 pointa off four three-pointers.

On the scene to watch Kelly Green was Mount St. Joseph's coach John Miller, whose formore player Alex Louin will be an incoming freshman on the Main Line, playing for Miller's longtime friend Harry Perretta at Villanova.

Orange was paced by Penn senior Kara Bonenberger of the defending Ivy League champions, who scored 14 points, though she will be heading to Italy with Penn next week, as will senior Kathleen Roche, who scored 12 points. Amanda Fioravanti, a sophomore at Saint Joseph's, had another stellar night, scoring 12 points to match Roche's total.

Sky Blue 82, Navy Blue 54 -- In one of the few games that held up and with no forfeit involved, Saint Joseph's sophomore Jessica Pongonis scored 19 points and had three 3-pointers, while Stephanie Schultz, a Colgate senior from the Hill School, scored 13 points.

As mentioned, Chelsea Woods was back in the 20s for Navy Blue, scoring 22 points aided by 7-for-8 from the line, while Navy Blue also got 14 points from Janaiah Elum, a Penn State Abington junior from Northeast High.
