Philly Summer League: Gold and White Stay Unbeaten at 3-0 To Top Standings

( Guru's note: In the Guru's effort to quickly write information from Tuesday's games so the commissioner's associates can leave quickly he did not get the actual score of the Gold win over Maroon, which will be added soon and the points for and against for each team will be rectified. Some adjustments have been made from the past reports due to a difference of scores though wins and losses were not affected.)

HATBORO --
in two battles of unbeaten teams in the early part of the season of the Philadelphia/Suburban Women's NCAA Summer Basketball League Gold prevailed over Maroon, while White, which is also the Division II West Chester squad, topped Purple 54-45, Tuesday night at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades in lower Bucks County.

Black, which is also Division II Philadelphia University, and Hunter Green, got their first wins of the season, while Gold's Jamine Elum, a 2012 Bethune-Cookman graduate out of Bodine High, had the season's top performance with 31 points.

Three other players also hit the special 20 or more points plateau with Alexis Smith, a recent Holy Cross graduate out of the Peddie School, adding 24 points to Gold's total, while Division II University of the Sciences of Philadelphia's Brianne Traub, a sophomore on the Pink squad out of northern New Jersey, scored 22 points in a loss to Sky Blue, and Erin Fenningham, a junior at Division II Holy Family out of St. Basil, scored 24 for Hunter Green.

Because of the Fourth of July falling on Friday this year and this week, the next games will be held in back-to-back style Wednesday night causing a quick turnaround.

White, holding a half-game lead over its opponent, will meet Sky Blue at 7 p.m. on court 2 in a battle of unbeatens while Kelly Green, coming off a bye Tuesday and a forfeit last Thursday, will be looking for its first win when it meets Black at 8:15 p.m. on Court 1 and Royal Blue will be doing likewise after a first win in a game on Court 2 against Maroon.

White can take over soul possession of first place since it is Gold's turn to take a bye Wednesday night in the 13-team league, following Kelly Green's night off on Tuesday.

Commissioner on the Mend

Longtime commissioner David B. Kessler, who had replacement hip surgery last week and is missing the front part of the season, was doing well when the Guru talked to him Sunday and he was set to do a week of rehab at Holy Redeemer.

Return of the Division I Players

As mentioned in earlier blogs on the summer league (see for further details), Division I players have been sidelined due to a problem with the NCAA getting certification as easily in the past.

As a result, the league started a week later and the D-I players were held out until next week, missing three or four games, depending on whether their respective team had a bye.

The commiasioner, who took a bit of a financial hit in all this, pro-rated the participation fee for the players affected.

Additionally, a new NCAA rule now counts incoming freshmen as active D-I players in they are already enrolled or attending classes.

In the past, for example, Saint Joseph's could have more than two of its players on the same squad if they were incoming freshman, but that is no longer true.

Prior to his surgery, the commissioner worked some trades of D-I players to satisfy the rule and the Guru will note those switches and re-post the rosters over the weekend.

Odds and Ends

The league newsletter reports that 161 players are in the league this summer representing over 60 collegiate programs along with those who have since graduated.

The Guru is heading to Washington for a WNBA game Wednesday night so the next report may be delayed since the Guru will have to wait for the email update from Stephen Michielli, who is running the league in Kessler's absence.

It' no real problem because the next games following Wednesday won't be played until Tuesday.
