Guru's Roundup: Saint Joseph's Repulses George Washington Rally

By Mel Greenberg

Saint Joseph's almost let one get away Wednesday morning when the Hawks squandered all of a 16-point lead before righting themselves for a 75-69 win over host George Washington in an Atlantic 10 game played in the nation's capital at the Colonials' Smith Center.

Erin Shields led the Saint Joseph's attack with 21 points but only two of them occurred after the half when George Washington rallied.

The win by the Hawks (15-4, 4-2 Atlantic 10) avenged the loss to the Colonials (13-6, 4-2) earlier this month at Hagan Arena in Philadelphia.

Sarah Fairbanks added 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Saint Joseph's, while Ilze Gotfrida scored 12 points, and Kelsey Berger scored 10. Additionally, Natasha Cloud had nine points, seven rebounds and dealt nine assists.

George Washington's Danni Jackson scored 18 points, Caira Washington had 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, and Brooke Wilson had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Though the Colonials dominated the inside, 38-22, and 26-4 on second chance points, the Hawks bench offered more production with a 26-9 advantaqge.

Saint Joseph's, in a logjam with a bunch of teams, take on the defending regular-season A-10 champion Dayton at Hagan Arena on Sunday at 6 p.m. with telecasting provided by the NBC Sports Network.

A year ago the Hawks lost to the Flyers during the regular season but then upset them in the conference semifinals on Hawk Hill before going on to edge Fordham in Brooklyn a week later for the A-10 title.

George Washington will host La Salle on Saturday.

Villanova Clipped by Saint John's

A pair of Big East streakers moving in opposite directions met Wednesday night and continued on their paths with conference frontrunner Saint John's topping the host Wildcats 59-52 on the Main Line at The Pavilion.

It was the fift straight win for the Red Storm (13-5, 6-1 Big East), while Villanova (13-5, 3-4) dropped its third straight conference game that would be more overall but for the one-point escape of Penn ast week in Big 5 action.

Amber Thompson had a team-high 14 points for the visitors.

"Going on the road in our conference is always difficult so I'm and I'm extremely happy to come away with this win," Saint John's coach Joe Tartamella said. "I thought our group did a great job of settling in after we struggled in the first part of the first half.

Kavunaa Edwards had 13 points and 10 rebounds while Devone Kane scored 10 and the Wildcats were held to 4-for-16 from the field.

Villanova stays home Saturday to greet Xavier, a former member of the Atlantic 10 conference.

Looking Ahead

Drexel is the only one of the 10-team PhilahoopsW group of local Division I coverage by the Guru in play Thursday night and it's a big game with the Dragons traveling to James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va.

Both teams are still unbeaten in early Colonial Athletic Association action with the host Duchesses picked as preseason favorites and Drexel picked second by the conference coaches.

On Saturday, Bentley coach Barb Stevens of the top-ranked Dvision II powerhouse gets her first chance to become the sixth women's coach in any of the NCAA Divisions to reach 900 career victories.

Jacqui Brugliera had 26 points Wednesday night as Bentley grabbed an easy 87-65 win over host New Haven in Connecticut in a Northeast 10 conference game.

Stevens is now at 899-246 going into Saturday's visit to the Falcons(17-0, 12-0 NE10-) by Saint Anselm College.

And that's the report until the next 24 hours.
