Guru's Report: Rutgers Cruises While Temple Falls in American Road Stops

By Mel Greenberg

Only two of the 10-team PhilahoopsW group in the Guru's local Division I coverage area played Tuesday night and came away with a split outcome in road stops involving competition in The American Conference.

Rutgers dominated Cincinnati 78-58 for the Scarlet Knight's eighth straight win while Temple lost to South Florida 64-51 in Tampa.

In the Rutgers game, Kahleah Copper had another strong showing in Rutgers' offense, scoring 21 points for Hall of Fame coach C. Vivian Stringer's squad (12-2, 3-0 American).

Betnijah Laney, looking more and more each time out like the player she was projected to be several years ago as a top blue chip recruit, had another double double with 16 points and 10 rebound.

Tyler Scaife matched her career high, scoring 18 points against the Bearcats (7-8, 0-4). Though this was the first meeting between the two under the new conference banner, Rutgers and Cincinnati met regularly in the old Big East, with the Bearcats pulling an upset last year down the stretch that proved costly to the Scarlet Knights' failed attempt to return to the NCAA tournament.

Rutgers next hosts SMU on Saturday.

Temple, meanwhile, was in Tampa for a first-ever meeting with South Florida and the Owls couldn't sustain the win over a previous Florida school in UCF and fell 64-51 to the Bulls (8-7, 3-1 American).

Feyonda Fitzgerald had 17 points for the Owls (8-6, 2-2), while Sha-Heria Shipp scored 10 points and Natasha Thames had another double double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Temple stays on the road for a Saturday noon visit to Bridgeport, Conn, where the Owls meet the top-ranked, unbeaten and defending NCAA champion Huskies in a second reunion between Tonya Cardoza and Hall of Famer Geno Auriemma since Cardoza left a 14-year stint to succeed Dawn Staley at Temple in July, 2008.

Several years ago they meet in Norfolk, Va., in a second-round NCAA matchup and as probably the same on Saturday the get-together offered pre-game hugs and handshakes and that's probably all the way UConn has been rolling.

The game, which will be televised on SNY-TV from Webster Bank Arena, is the first regular-season hosting appearance for UConn away from eitther the campus Gampel Pavilion or Hartford's XL Arena

The Huskies has played at the site before in NCAA postseason competition, most recently beating Kentucky in March in the Elite Eight to get to the Final Four and an eventual record-tying eighth NCAA championship.

On Wednesday, Saint Joseph's will try to bunce back from Sunday's upset home loss to George Washington when the Hawks play the annual school kids game at 11:30 a.m.in Hagan Arena, hosting Rhode Island in an Atlantic 10 matchup.

Laurie Dougherty will be shooting another galllery photo collection from the game for the Guru and she will also be at Thursday's Drexel game.

Villanova is on the road in the Big East, traveling to Butler, one of the emigres from the Atlantic 10. Laa Salle hosts the streaking VCU Rams Wednesday night at Tom Gola Arena and the Guru will be there as well as at Saint Joseph's before heading up to Penn State for the funeral of former Women's Basketball sports information director Mary Jo Haverbeck. (See coverage in posts above this).

Penn, meanwhile, will be in Baltimore to play a second straight MEAC school, meeting Morgan State looking for a record eighth-straight nonconference win before opening the Ivy League season Satuurday in The Palestra against four-time defending champion and preseason favorite Princeton.

Though the following links have been previously been posted on the Guru's twitter accunt @womhoopsguru, here are the connections to all of Laurie's photo works so far.

Honors

The PhiiahoopsW cleaned up again, as well as a few local players elsewhere, in terms of the weekly handouts from their connected conferences.

Technically, not counted as part of the cleanup since a local will always win the Big 5 honor, that recipient this week is La Salle's Leeza Burdgess.

Penn's Katy Allen and Princeton's Michelle Miller got the Ivy's player of the week award together while the Quakers' Sydney Stipanovich grabbed the rookie of the week award.

Delaware's Kelsey Buchanan is the player of the week in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Over in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the weekly honor went to Rider's MyNeshia McKenzie.

That's it for now. Other than being at Wednesday's games, paying tribute to Mary Jo now takes precedence over the next 48 hours.
