Guru Local catch-up: Kane Surge Carries Villanova Over Sacred Heart
By Mel Greenberg
Over the years we've seen veteran Villanova coach Harry Perretta raise cane imploring his unique strategy.
Well, on Wednesday night there was a case of Kane raising the Wildcats.
In this instance it was Devon Kane scoring the last 19 points to carry Villanova to a comeback and 62-59 nonconference win in overtime over Sacred Heart (1-2) in Fairfield, Conn. to stay unbeaten at 4-0 heading into Sunday's home opener against Lafayette.
It was the second straight game the Wildcats rallied and in this one Kane, who had scored just two points prior to her explosion, got Villanova to the extra period with a shot with 3.4seconds left in regulation.
"It was one of the top five performances I've seen," said Perretta, who is now in his fourth decade coaching coaching on the Main Line. "I mean how many people score 19 points in a row? It's not something easy to do."
Ironically, Villanova edged Sacred Heart at the finish in their last meeting, also in Fairfield in 2009.
Because the Guru inadvertently left the game out of his composite and failed to look for it, thus omitting it in the Thursday roundup, he tried to get this posted from NewYork while attending the Lapchick Character Awards yesterday but ran into issues of technology working by remote.
For the full Villanova game report go to the Wildcats website. Later today the Guru will post Theresa Grentz's acceptance speech along with the presentation remarks by Temple senior associate athletic directory Kristen Foley, who played for Grentz at Rutgers.
Speaking of the Scarlet Knights, the Guru will be on the scene tonight for the game against Howard.
