Philly Summer League: Hunter Green Avoids Upset As Top Two Seeds Reach Final

By Mel Greenberg

HATBORO, Pa. --
Former Saint Joseph's star Katie Kuester is one win away from a third straight championship but first as a player-coach after Tuesday's narrow 60-54 Hunter Green escape as the top seed from fourth-seeded Maroon in the first of two semifinal games at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

"Survive and advance," Kuester smiled using a famed phrase about the NCAA men's tournament one uttered by the late North Carolina State coach Jim Valvano.

The top two seeds made Thursday's final, which tips at 7 p.m. on Court 1, after White rallied in the nightcap for a 70-64 win over third-seed Gold that deprived Gold coach Ted Hagedorn of a third-straight summer crown, though it was with other teams..

Both winners were at disadvantages with Hunter Green missing Kerri Shields, a recent Boston College graduate, and Saint Joseph's incoming freshman Kathleen Fitzpatrick while White was without Villanova junior Emily Leer because of prior commitments, though all are expected back for the title game.

"We don't have any bigs tonight," White coach Keith Wood shrugged before his game. "But it is what it is."

"That means it's launch time," Kuester quipped before her game, which seemed on the way to a repeat of a regular-season 79-62 Hunter Green win over Maroon, whose roster is dominated by Division II University of the Sciences of Philadelphia.

And launch time it was early on as Hunter Green rode a reign of treys to an 18-point lead that was rebuilt after Maroon sliced the advantage to 12 points.

But Maroon would not go quietly and moved within a basket late in the game that was offset by Erin Shields' shooting 6-for-6 from the line in the final minute, her total free throw production for the night for Hunter Green.

Shields, an incoming Saint Joseph's senior, nailed four 3-pointers to finish with 22 points, the sixth time this summer she has scored 20 or more points in a game.

That broke a tie with West Chester's Brittany of Sicinski of Sky Blue, which was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Hunter Green's only loss to date was to Gold to go 11-1 and Kuester's team earned the top seed over White, which also went 11-1, because of a head-to-head 66-60 win in which Shields scored 29 points.

Shields' play last season on Hawk Hill helped Saint Joseph's capture the Atlantic 10 title and return to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2000. Shields earned most improved player accolades from both the conference and Big Five.

White's 11-1, of course, included the loss to Hunter Green.

In addition to Shields' play Tuesday night, Kuester had 13 points and three 3-pointers, while Dana Wieller, a recent graduate from Division II Bloomsburg, also had 13 points and three 3-pointers.

Maroon, which went 8-4 in the regular season, got 14 points from USP's Brianne Traub, eight each from recent Holy Cross graduate Kaitlin Cole and USP's Camille McPherson, and seven from Saint Peter's senior Teresa Corchado.

Meanwhile in the second game, White trailed Gold by eight points in the first half before drawing closer with a five-point spurt before the period ended.

White defeated Gold 67-51 in the regular season and former Division II Holy Family star Catherine Carr again led the way Tuesday night, scoring 20 points and nailing four 3-pointers.

Gold was 9-3 to take the third seed in the final standings.

Jasmine Elum, a 2012 graduate of Bethune-Cookman, added 11 points to White's attack and Meghan Gibson, a 2011 graduate of Holy Family, scored nine points.

Saint Joseph's sophomore Sarah Fairbanks scored 22 points for Gold, while Hawks junior Natasha Cloud scored 16 points, and recent Harvard graduate Elle Hagedorn, the daughter of the Gold coach, scored 10 points.

Championship Preview

Looking ahead to Thursday's one-night winner-take-all championship, remember, there is no best-of-three championship round this year to avoid losing players taking off for final summer vacation days or early returns to collegiate campuses for the 2013-14 season.

Notes longtime commissioner David Kessler: "I actually have a scorebook from back in the day with playoff dates in late August.

"But we can't go that long now because some players return to campus in mid-August or at the same time incoming freshmen are taking off to get to orientation. And others are trying to get their last shot at vacation."

The Hunter Green-White final is a rematch of a Hunter Green 66-60 win over White on July 10 when Erin Shields scored 29 points, hit three 3-pointers and was a perfect 14-for-14 from the line as White suffered it's only defeat of the summer despite 23 points from Catherine Carr and 14 from Jasmine Elum.

Directions

The Gym, which has a big sign on the front, is near the end of Willow Grove Industrial Commons business park at the end of Turnpike Drive, which is off Davisville Road by the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

It is near the intersection of Byberry Road and Davisville Road, which runs from 611 in Willow Grove.

Admission is free and there is a reasonably priced snack bar with drinks, hot dogs, water ice, hamburgers and munchies.

If it is raining and parking isn't right near by the entrances, a Guru secret is to go to the back of the complex, look for the deck, and if the back door is open, the walk will be shorter.

Tidbits From the Commissioner

David B. Kessler, now in his 20th season as commissioner of the league, in the game-day newsletter, notes that this time around there are 156 players representing over 60 collegiate programs and the average player height is 5-foot-9 and the average age is 20.5.

Looking ahead to next season, the 2014 draft will be May 29, the season will open June 17, the entry deadline for registration form, player information sheet, and fee is May 24th,

On a serious note, the commissioner would like to remind players to please remove all jewelry prior to playing in games. He says it's a rule designed for everyone's protection and game officials need to enforce it because of potential liability issues if an injury occurs.

Additionally, in the newsletter for the semifinals, Kessler reported 2012 La Salle grad Michelle McCaughren, who was on Gold this summer, has received a scholarship through the Sports Changes Life Foundation and will attend National University of Ireland in Galway where she will play and go for her masters degree in international management.

McCaughren, who was an assistant at Division III Swarthmore, helping the Garnet to a 23-7 record and firsst ECAC Division III championship this past season, will also coach and mentor at-risk teenage girls. She leaves Sunday and expects to be back in time to play in the league next summer.

Kerri Shields of Hunter Green and a recent grad of Boston College received the same scholarship and will play and study at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland.

Kathryn Stockbower, a 2011 Swarthmore grad who holds the NCAA Division III record for career double doubles and played on Heather Grey, will enter her second year of medical school at Temple University.

Gold's Madeline Ross, a recent Swarthmore grad, reports that after an exhaustive application process, she will be commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the United States Air Force. She is one of nine females accepted and will first undergo OCS training in Montgomery, Ala., and will probably be deployed to an air base in Wyoming, Montana, or North Dakota where one of her duties will be to oversee missile weapons systems.
