Guru's Summer League Report: Lehigh Stars Propel Orange To First

(Guru’s note: The WNBA report is just above this post.)

By Mel Greenberg

HATBORO, Pa. –
Lehigh sophomore Maria Repasch’s 19 points – the top scoring output in five games Thursday night -- and her senior Mountain Hawks’ teammate Aly Borick’s 18 points carried Orange to a narrow 68-63 win over Royal Blue (3-2) and into first place a half-game ahead of Kelly Green and Columbia Blue in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s NCAA Summer Basketball League at Kelly Bolish Gym – home of the AAU Renegades near Willow Grove

Borick nailed five 3-pointers for Orange (4-1) while Royal Blue – in a three-way tie for fourth a game behind Orange – made it a Division II Holy Family affair as sophomore Carolyn Heston scored 12 points, junior transfer Ana Cruz from Harcum College scored 11 points, and Tigers sophomore Maggie Serratelli scored nine points. Christine Verrelle, a freshman at Dowling College, scored 10 points for Royal Blue.

Dowling College, incidentally, is a Division II school in the East Coast Conference and is located in Oakdale, N.Y., in Suffolk County on Long Island near Islip. Also, for first time readers of the summer league report, class designations of active collegians reflect their status when classes resume in September.

Meanwhile Teal (2-2) consisting primarily of former Temple players from the Dawn Staley coaching era in the middle of the last decade had a bye and is 1.5 games out of first in seventh place in the 11-team league.

“Surprisingly for this point in the schedule, no forfeits have occurred, which begins to happen when kids go on vacation, and most of the games have been very close and very competitive,” said longtime league commissioner David Kessler of the tight race to date in the standings.

Kessler, a retired Philadelphia Dept. of Recreation employee, self-admittedly claims his staying power as commissioner is attributed “far more for my administrative skills than any knowledge of the sport.”

Speaking of skills, Cardinal Red (1-3) also benefitted from its own long range shooting efficiency, especially from Holy Cross sophomore Alex Smith and Lafayette junior Alicia Manning, to defeat Gold 74-49 for their first win as the league season completed its fifth night of activity.

Smith had five treys - the same night-best total from Lehigh's Borick on Orange -- while Manning shot four of them. Gold (3-2), whose second straight loss caused a drop to the middle of the pack, got 14 points from Bethune-Cookman senior Jasmine Elum and and 13 from Lehigh junior Becky Guman. However, All-Ivy star Addie Micir, a recent graduate of two-time champion Princeton, and her Tigers teammate Megan Bowen were unable to play for Gold Thursday.

Columbia Blue (3-1), a team consisting entirely of Division II West Chester players as allowed under NCAA sanctioning rules over summer leagues, suffered its first loss, a 59-49 setback, to Kelly Green (3-1), which forced a second-place tie with their opponent as Lehigh junior Kelly Peterson scored 16 points and Villanova junior Megan Pearson scored 15 points.

As a result there are no longer any unbeaten teams in the standings.

West Chester senior Allison Hostetter scored 16 points for Columbia Blue, Golden Rams freshman Steph Keyes scored 12 points, and incoming freshman Kendall Benovy, an All-Star from Hershey High, scored 10.

Purple (2-3) won its second straight after dropping its first three to move into eighth place, which would be the last playoffs position at the end of this month, by dominating Lime Green 65-44 as St. Joseph’s sophomore Erin Shields scored 16 points and recent La Salle grad Ashley Gale scored 14.

Lime Green (1-4), which is composed almost entirely of Division II Philadelphia University players, got 11 points from sophomore Samantha Morris, nine points from junior Kristen Blye, and seven from Rams junior Christine Wooding.

Black (3-2), which gets the rotating bye when play resumes next Thursday, did its part to gain a three-way tie for fourth with a 57-45 win over White (0-4), which is composed primarily of Division II University of the Sciences players.

Recent Division III Swarthmore graduate Kathryn Stockbower had 14 points for Black, while Garnets freshman Elle Larsen scored 11 points, and Division III Haverford junior Calla Miller scored nine.

Ryann Fiascki, an incoming freshman at East Stroudsburg, scored 12 points for White, USP junior Rebecca Ruggear scored nine points, and Brianne Traub, a projected 2017 grad under USP’s academic course arrangement, scored eight points.

No games are scheduled Tuesday due to its immediately following of the July 4th holiday when many players are on vacation.

Based on the next set of games, the standings go either way in terms of tighter or looser.

In terms of teams at the top teams playing each other Orange (4-1) meets Columbia Blue (3-1) on Court 2 at 7 p.m., while Kelly Green (3-1) meets Royal Blue (3-2) on Court 1 at 7 p.m.

In the other three games, Purple (2-3) looking to move up meets Gold (3-2) on Court 3 at 8:15 p.m. That court is only used in the 8:15 games.

In the other two 8:15 p.m. games Lime Green (1-4) meets Cardinal Red (1-3) on Court 1 while Teal (2-2) meets White (0-4) on Court 2.

Incidentally, the Guru would like to note the gym does have a reasonably priced refreshment stand and he gives special thanks to the cashier/waitress for the wifi code that enabled him to watch both WNBA games on his iPad while also keeping track of the league competition.

Enjoy the holiday but before the sign off, here are the latest standings with some adjustments to the points for and against by Commissioner Kessler who claims the postgame outings with the Guru has played havoc afterwards with the Commisioner’s mathematical skills.
