Guru Summer League Report: Three Teams Stay Perfect

(Guru's note: Several WNBA stories are above this post)

By Mel Greenberg

Team Black, Columbia Blue and Gold stayed unbeaten at 2-0 in the second night of competition Tuesday in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s NCAA Summer League at the Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades in Hatboro, Pa.

Unlike opening night on Thursday, several games were competitive most of the way. Teal and Orange got their first wins while Royal Blue and Kelly Green suffered their first losses.

Teal (1-1) was led by former Temple star Ashley Morris with 31 points and former Drexel star Michelle Maslowski with 17 defeated Kelly 75-65 in a game that was close until the closing minutes.

The Guru did not attend having been in Washington for the Mystics’ WNBA game against the Indiana Fever, but he will make his seasonal spectator-interviewing debut on Thursday night.

Kelly (1-1) got 16 points from Lehigh junior Kelly Peterson, while her Mountain Hawks teammate and sister junior Marybeth Egan scored nine points and Villanova junior Megan Pearson also scored nine.

All class designation in these reports involve active collegians and their status for next season.

NBA Detroit Pistons coach John Kuester was in attendance to watch his daughter Katie, who plays on the Kelly Green team and also stars for St. Joseph’s.

Incidentally, the Hawks will be making a major announcement Wednesday involving the athletic department but it is nothing negative.

Columbia Blue (2-0), composed entirely of Division II West Chester players as allowed under NCAA rules for summer leagues, remained perfect with a narrow 61-56 win over Royal Blue (1-1), a team dominated by Division II Holy Family players who dropped their first game.

Freshman Meghan Kerrigan, junior Alexandra Lennon and freshman Kendall Benovy each scored 15 points for Columbia Blue.

Holy Family junior Maggie Serratelli scored 14 points while Dowling freshman Christine Verrelle scored 10 points.

Gold (2-0) remained unbeaten with a 63-49 win over Lime Green (0-2) as Lehigh sophomore Becky Guman scored 16 points, Bethune-Cookman senior Jasmine Elum scored 12, and Princeton junior Megan Bowen scored 11 points.

Philadelphia University sophomore Stephanie Agger scored 14 points for Lime Green and her junior Rams teammate Kristen Blye scored 14.

Team Black (2-0) got 20 points from Lehigh senior Emily Gratch, while recently graduated sophomore Kathryn Stockbower scored 10, and King’s College freshman Alicia Hayes scored nine in a 61-51 victory over Purple (0-2), which got 14 points from recently graduated La Salle star Ashley Gale and 12 from Susquehanna sophomore Amarra Boone.

The three unbeatens could remain as such after Thursday since Columbia has a bye while Black and Gold will not meet each other.

In the other Tuesday result Orange (1-1) got its first win, beating White 68-54 as Lehigh sophomore Marisa Repasch scored 22 points and Villanova junior Rachel Roberts scored 20.

White (0-1), which had a bye on opening night, got 12 points from Villanova junior Jesse Carey, while Stroudsburg freshman Ryann Fiascki scored 10 points and University of Sciences freshman Kate Schmid scored eight.

Cardinal Red (0-1) had a bye.

The standing after two nights:
Columbia Blue 2-0
Gold 2-0
Team Black 2-0
Kelly Green 1-1
Orange 1-1
Royal Blue 1-1
Teal 1-1
Cardinal Red 0-1
White 0-1
Lime Green 0-2
Purple 0-2
