UConn's March To 88 Straight -- The AP Ranking Performance
By Mel Greenberg
Since it is UConn week in the women’s basketball world in terms of going after the UCLA record of 88 straight wins set by John Wooden’s men’s teams in 1971-74, the Guru is marking Wednesday’s installment of celebrating 600 weeks of Associated Press women’s rankings by noting UConn’s lifetime performance.
But first a quick time out to say there is another notable event in Tara VanDerveer at Stanford is going after her 800th win. Coaching performances will run here Thursday.
For this exercise the Guru established a filter that runs from 1990-91 until the current week. UConn actually was ranked the final two polls in 1989-90 when the Huskies made their debut but to keep things from getting messy those were omitted though overall count is not listed here so there’s no effect.
In terms of being No. 1 here is a list of all the teams that have reached the top of what was in the front part a coaches’ vote and in 1994-95 became a media vote but the history stayed a constant.
Interesting had not the Huskies made one little slip in 2007-08 the Huskies would have another eight straight No. 1s at 57.
First here are the teams and their total No. 1 rankings. There are 372 weeks overall in the period but UConn did some sliding in and out between 1991 and were outside the elite just prior to the preseason vote of 1993-94. They have been in the rankings since.
Remember this is a filter list so previous successes prior to the start date from such teams as Old Dominion, Tennessee, Texas and Louisiana Tech are precluded here.

Why start the "UConn Era" in 1990/91? They won once in the 90's and Tennessee won four times. You are giving Tennesee's Era to UConn.
