Summer League Good Omen For St. Joseph's?
By Mel Greenberg
The WNBA was idle Saturday night and all that can be said to date was taken care of in the previous post, which provides a perfect opportunity for a brief update on playoff action, which is under way in the Philadelphia Dept. of Recreation Women's Summer League that's sancitioned by the NCAA.
Several years ago Drexel players seemed to dominate play and sure enough the follow collegiate season the Dragons went on to win their first regular season and conference tournament title in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Now it appears that a similar phenomenon could exist for St. Joseph's, which had a strong second half last season.
The league playoffs have reached the semifinals, which will be played on Tuesday night at the Kelly Bolish Gym, the home of the AAU Renegades, Tuesday night in Hatboro, Pa.
Directions for the site -- the games will be at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. with a best-of-three finals to get under way Thursday night -- are in previous posts here. Basically, get to Byberry Road and Davisville Road and then hit back to the City on Davisville Road. As soon as you cross the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which happens quickly, then make a quick right turn into the business park and follow the road along the turnpike all the way to the back.
Anhow, St. Joseph's players past, present, and future can be found on three of the rosters in the semifinals.
The Lime team, the top seed at 8-2, will play Black at 7 p.m. before Red meets Columbia Blue, a team consistings of entire affiliations with Holy Family, including Catherine Carr.
Lime at 8-2 earned the No. 1 seed and has been paced by St. Joseph's junior Katie Kuester, the daughter of NBA Detroit Pistons coach John Kuester. Recent St. Bonaventure grad Dana Mitchell, a Pennsbury High grad, is also on the squad. Anne Bracaglia is a Lehigh sophomore.
Kuester had 38 points, including 8 treys, while Mitchell scored 14 points in the quarterfinals on Thursday night. The Black team, they'll face, was a seventh seed that upset No. 1 Royal, though several regulars including former Temple stars Khadija Bowens and Ari Moore was unable to make the game.
Black features Michelle Maslowski, who was Drexel's all-time scoring leader until Gabriella Marginean broke her record, the CAA record, and the all-time Philadelphia collegiate women's record last season when she was a senior.
The squad also has Lehigh's Aly Borick, who had 25 points and seven treys, in the quarterfinals -- Maslowski had 29 -- and recent Hawks grad Amie Gillespie.
The Red team has Drexel's Tyler Hale, La Salle's Ashley and Antonia Gale, incoming St. Joseph's freshmen Alexandra Jones and Erin Shields, incoming Drexel freshman Tory Thierolf, who had 16 points in the quarterfinals, while Shields had 15, and Holy Family's Christine McCollum and Kelly Killion, among others on the roster.
With East WNBA teams on the road Tuesday night, the Guru will be in attendance, as will be, according to a rumor, legendry local officials observer Joe McGeever, a former Penn assistant coach.
As always, special thanks to league commissioner David Kessler for the updates.
The Guru will be on the scene Sunday in New York for the showdown between the host Liberty and Connecticut Sun, which is coming in off a worst-ever blowout loss suffered Friday night at the hands of the Atlanta Dream.
Oh yes, the Guru successfully hooked his iPad to the hotel room HD-TV to watch a rented movie as an experience after the game and the visual was quite good.
Until next time, which will be in the next 48 hours, thanks for the visits.
