Guru’s AP WBB Poll Stats: Coach Appearances and Team Streaks

With the preseason women’s poll of the 2019-20 season set to come out Oct. 30, the 769th overall since the first one in Nov. 1976, here is an update at close of business last season breakout of the Guru’s database showing all time coaching appearances, adjusted in the active coaching section ranking,  following five departures, most notably North Carolina’s Sylvia Hatchell from the first ten.

Others gone from the active head coach section with multi-year accumulations for the breakout, were Tennessee’s Holly Warlick, Penn State’s Coquese Washington, and California’s Lindsay Gottlieb. 

Rejoining the list, now at Georgia Tech, is Nell Fortner at 46th place with 30 prior appearance - 29 at Auburn and one at Purdue.

When the new poll is official, launching its 45th season, Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma will move from a tie with retired Georgia coach Andy Landers to sole possession of third place all time behind the late Tennessee coach Pat Summitt and Stanford’s Tara Vanderveer.

Since this poll season becomes the fourth full-decade-closer and fifth overall, if UConn lands in the top five and stays there prior to the first poll of 2020, the Huskies will have gone the entire decade in the top five, having picked up an ongoing appearance streak in the category from the previous decade.

They already have a record-within-decade total of 185, thus inherently all this also applies to top ten appearance, a mark that might be one or two weeks more pending review of the count that began with the first poll of January 2010.

Speaking of streaks, the coach file below is followed by the current team appearance streak after last season’s final poll.

UConn will hit 490 next week and likely in week 11 join Tennessee as the second team with an all-time consecutive week total reaching 500.

The Lady Vols’ run of 565 is listed in the recent departed streak section after the ongoing current teams as of last March.
