By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru and Bob Heller
HATBORO, Pa. — Just under half the nine-game schedule completed the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA Certified Women’s Summer Basketball League following Thursday’s results here at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, and now the action heads into the week-long July fourth holiday break with Team Black, also known as D2-Jefferson U, and Team Red, also known as a combo of D1-West Chester and D3 Gettysburg, still unbeaten at 4-0.
Enough games have now been played that true tie-breaks can be determined each night, though not yet in all cases, the rest of the way.
Bob has the recaps below but the skinny is that Black stayed perfect with a 61-47 win over Lime Green, also known as D2-Chestnut Hill, a team that is a rival of Black in the winter in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).
Red, which won’t meet Black until late next month, stayed tied at the top with an easy 94-48 triumph over winless Golden Sun (0-3), also known as D3-Arcadia.
Sky Blue, also known as D2-Holy Family, also a member of the CACC, took a 51-43 win over Purple, composed of D2-East Stroudsburg to stay all alone in third.
Purple dropped into a three-way deadlock at 2-2 with defending champion Maroon, also known as D2-USciences and Royal Blue, also known as a combination of D2-Kutztown and D3-Salisbury.
Maroon, who meets Black after the break, struggled again but drew even at 2-2 with an 86-69 win over Kelly Green, also known as a combination of D2-Millersville and D3-Moravian.
Royal Blue has lost to both Purple and Maroon but got an 86-51win Thursday night over Yhe Orange roster has a plentiful group of D3-Ursinus players.
The losses by Lime Green and Kelly Green put them into a two-way tie at seventh but Lime Green has a head to-head win over Kelly Green.
Orange (0-3) and Golden Sun (0-3), a team also known as D3-Arcadia, are still looking for their first win, but could get it soon after the break for one when a game last week postponed due to a wet floor from the weather will be played.
The teams will meet in an 8:15 time slot on a night to be determined and the matchup will follow an early game for each listed for courts with 7 p.m. tip times.
Individual Performances
Just two players, both new to the list, hit the nightly top performance citation for 20 or more points and each of them scored 20 in front of several other players who missed by just two or three points.
Lime Green’s Lauren Crim, a Chestnut Hill sophomore out of Lansdale Catholic, hit the mark in her team’s loss to Black while Maroon and USciences freshman freshman Isla Brennan scored 20 in the Devils’ win over Kelly Green.
Breaking Ties
Some of this content has been spoken to above but to put it all in one place, this is the section that will house how seeds are determined each night leading to the playoffs in which all 10 teams qualify but the top six get byes to the quarterfinals while the opening round will match seeds seven and ten besides sees eight and nine in a doubleheader to advance the other two.
Two-way ties are determined by head-to-head results. Along the way if teams haven’t met yet, then best win becomes the deal maker.
Three or more teams involved in a deadlock are determined through common records against each other.
In some situations before getting near the final standings the criteria hasn’t been met and teams will just be arbitrarily placed and when that is done it will be reported in this section.
The quick way to look at how seeds are shaping is the tie-tracker grid at the bottom of this report but in front of the rosters.
So since they won’t meet till near the end, for now Black’s win over third-place Sky Blue gives the Rams the top slot going into the holiday break with Red at No. 2, while Sky Blue is alone in third.
In the three-way tie for fourth, Royal Blue at 0-2 is dropped to sixth and since Purple and Maroon haven’t met they are just arbitrarily dropped in the fourth ad fifth seed positions.
In the two-way for seventh the Lime Green win over Kelly Green earns the sot while the winless duo of Golden Sun and Orange are placed arbitrarily to ninth and 10h.
Looking Ahead
The 2-2 record and early struggles of defending champion Maroon has taken some of the luster off of the matchup a week from Tuesday when play resumes and the two meet at 7 p.m. on Court 1.
A year ago Black went unbeaten all the way to the title game, handing Maroon its only loss but then the Devils avenged the setback to win the championship over the Rams.
Last winter out of the CACC the two gave each other their only loss for a long while Black suffered a narrow second loss before the two would meet in the conference championship.
Black prevailed in topping USP 74-73 in overtime.
Both advanced to the DII East regional at USciences and were eliminated in separate rounds without meeting each other as Jefferson first fell to Stonehill.
In other games after the break, unbeaten Red meets 2-2 Royal Blue at 8:15 on Court 2 while 3-1 Sky Blue meets 0-3 Orange at 7 p.m. on Court 2.
Purple (2-2) meets Kelly Green (1-3) at 8:15 p.m. on Court 1. The other game at 7 p.m. on Court 3 has Golden Sun (0-3) meeting Lime Green (1-3).
That night also marks the arrival of three Division I players in Villanova’s Mackenzie Gardler, the highly touted redshirt freshman of last season out of Cardinal O’Hara, and Raven James on Team Kelly Green, while the other is ironically Alana Davidson from Davidson.
The players themselves committed no violations but some red tape issues caused a delayed start to the certification completion causing a delay when the trio could officially play.
Re-Caps
Black 61, Lime Green 47
Team Black (also known as Jefferson University) survived a second half threat from team Line Green (also known as Chestnut Hill College) to remain undefeated with 61-47 win.
Leading 30-18 at the half, Black scored a quick basket to open the third quarter before Lime Green responded with 13 unanswered points, highlighted by three three-pointers from Lauren Crim to pull within one 32-31 at the 6:51 mark.
After an exchange of baskets Sabria Lytes gave Black a 36-33 lead only to have Lime Green’s Brianna Cullen tie the game at 36-36 with a three-pointer with 4:40 left in the period.
Black responded with and 11-1 uprising, sparked by senior Caitlyn Cunningham who had seven of the 11 points in the run to close out the half and give Black a 47-37 lead.
Cunningham added another basket to open the fourth quarter followed by baskets from Lytes and Bridget Arcidiacono to push the lead to 16.
Black’s lead never dropped below ten points the rest of the way as they cruised to their fourth straight win of the season.
Cunningham led all scorers with 18 points while Arcidiacono chipped in nine.
Crim led Lime Green who dropped to 1-3 with 20 points. Cassie Sebold and Maura Conroy had seven apiece.
Maroon 86, Kelly Green 69
Defending league champion Maroon (also known as USciences) also survived a scare as Kelly Green nearly erased a 17-point halftime deficit to close within four before Maroon pulled away for an 86-67 win.
Maroon was connecting from long range for most of the first half, sinking ten three point field goals, including four by freshman Isla Brennan to take a 54-37 lead at the half.
Kelly Green began to chip away at the lead in the third quarter, with Mia Leonard’s layup cutting the lead to single digits and a three-ball from Lauren Cunningham closing the gap to six 64-58.
Kate Seeman’s basket to open the scoring in the fourth quarter cut Maroon’s lead to four 66-62.
The basket however was the only field goal Kelly Green would muster until the final minute as Maroon kicked their defense up a notch and their offense returned to its first half form, producing a 20-3 run that saw seven different players score.
Kelly Green scored two baskets in the final 35 seconds to make the final 86-69.
Brennan led five Maroon players in double figures with 20 points on the night (four threes). Jordan Vitelli had 13 (two threes) while Kendall Keyes, Irisa Ye and Taylor Hamm scored ten apiece. Keyes had two three-points while Brigit Coleman (8 points) also had a pair of three-balls.
Samantha Brusha led Kelly Green with 17 points.
Meghan Ansel chipped in 13 while Cunningham added 11. Seeman rounded out Kelly’s double figure scorers with ten points.
Sky Blue 51, Purple 43
The early contest between Sky Blue (also known as Holy Family University) and Purple (East Stroudsburg alumni) was the only contest of the night to be decided by less than ten points.
The game had the makings of a blowout as Sky Blue jumped out to a 20-8 lead after the first quarter before Purple started to chip away at deficit.
Tyeca Reviere hit a three-pointer early in the second quarter and added another one late as the Purple squad closed within eight at the half, 31-23.
Purple closed within six three times in the third quarter and trailed 43-35 heading into the final period.
After both teams exchanged baskets, Purple‘s Melissa Poderis had a steal and a layup and Dana Bandurick added a basket to pull Purple within four 45-41 with 4:49 left.
Sky Blue followed with three straight buckets, a baseline jumper from Dana Dockery and two driving layups from Monee Moore to push their lead to ten, 51-41.
Sydney Blum added a basket for Purple to provide the final 51-43 score.
Four players produced all the points for Sky Blue with Dockery leading the way with 17 points. Liz Radley added 13 points while Anjelai Hayes and Moore chipped in 11 and ten respectively.
Reviere had ten points for Purple while Blum and Emma Stanfield chipped in eight apiece.
Red 94, Golden Sun 48
Team Red (West Chester/Gettysburg) also remained unbeaten with a 94-48 blowout of team Golden Sun.
Red had a well balanced scoring effort with five players in double figures led by Sasha Marvel’s 12 points. Gabby Troisi, Becca Margolis and Katie Fisher added 11 points apiece while Leah Johnson chipped in ten.
Taylor Dunn led golden Sun with 12 points while Julia Makowski chipped in eight.
Red scored the first eight points of the game and opened an 18-1 lead and never looked back, leading 26-7 at the end of the first quarter and 42-21 at the half.
A 13-1 run to start the third quarter pushed the Red team’s lead above the point mark at 55-22 and they closed out the third quarter with a 13-5 run and finished the game with a solid fourth quarter to earn their fourth win of the season.
Golden Sun remains winless at 0-3.
Royal Blue 86, Orange 53
Team Royal Blue (Salisbury University/Kutztown University) also had an easy night as they defeated Team Orange (Ursinus College), 88-53, evening their record at 2-2.
Annie Whalen led Royal with 19 points while Rachel Ryan and Kaylee Otlowski had ten points apiece.
Kristin Hamill led Orange with ten points while Courtney Hardy and gabby Downs had nine and eight respectively.
Royal scored the first 11 points of the game and opened up a 28-17 lead at the end of one quarter.
They extended the lead to as many as 20 in the second quarter before ending the period with a 47-29 lead.
A 19-5 run to open the third quarter gave Royal a comfortable 66-34 lead midway through the period and a 75-45 lead entering the final quarter.
Royal outscored Orange 11-6 in the fourth quarter to produce their 35-point win.
Seeman and Leonard had nine points apiece.
