Philly WBB Summer League: Black and Red Quickly Last Unbeatens

By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru

HATBORO, Pa. — An historic postponement, two narrow wins, and a quick reduction to just two unbeaten teams marked the second night and end of the first week of competition Thursday in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA-Certified Women’s Basketball Summer League at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades.

The postponement, a so-called rain-in, we’ll get to further down involving Team Orange and Golden Sun (D3-Arcadia).

Meanwhile, Team Black (D2-Jeffferson), posted a lopsided 70-50 win over Kelly Green (D2-Millersvile/D3-Moravian), while Red (D2-West Chester/D3-Gettysburg) edged Purple (D2-East Stroudsburg alums) 45-44 in one of the two closely fought outcomes to stay unbeaten at 2-0.

Red had beaten defending champion Maroon (D2-USciences) opening night on Tuesday to help create an early scramble.

The other narrow finish saw Maroon avoid an 0-2 start by edging Royal Blue (D2-Kutztown/D3 Salisbury) 59-57.

Royal Blue had come from behind to lead 57-56 when Maroon called time-out with 1:25 remaining.

They missed a shot when play resumed, but as Royal was trying to bring the ball back up the floor, Maroon’s Jess Huber out of North Penn High before joining the Devils stole it and the hit a three-pointer from the right wing.

This put Maroon ahead 59-57 with a minute to go.

When Huber blocked a shot at the other end, Royal was able to maintain possession, but then turned the ball over out-of-bounds with 33 seconds to go.

Maroon’s last offensive possession ended with a missed lay-up on a drive down the lane, but Royal also missed on its final shot of the game.

Huber, who was one of three players to hit the 20 or more points category on opening night, was one of three again Thursday with another round of prolific three-point shooting. She nailed seven from beyond the arc for 27 points.

Maroon also got 12 points from Jordan Vitelli and 10 from Kendall Keyes.

Kutztown’s Karen Lapkiewicz had 11 to lead Royal Blue while Alyssa Bondi of Misericordia had three triplets to fuel her team high-matching 11 points and Erin Lindahl, an Emory senior, scored eight.

With Bob Heller handling duties elsewhere this week we didn’t get a detailed report on how the other close finish occurred in terms of being buzzer-beaters, rallies, or holding off rallies down the stretch.

Special thanks to Tom Utescher of the Chestnut Hill Local for details of the Maroon-Royal Blue Battle.

In the other of four games played, Sky Blue (D2-Holy Family) romped over Lime Green (D2-Chestnut Hill) 71-29. The two teams are winter rivals who compete in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

The winners were led by Elizabeth Radley, who scored 16, while Dana Dockery had 15 points, Meghan O’Connell scored 11 off three dimes, Casey Schweitzer scored 10 and Anjelai Hayes scored nine. All of them are on Holy Family’s squad.

Alana Cardona of Indiana U. of Pa. scored 12 and Lauren Crim of Chestnut Hill scored 11 for the Lime Green squad.

In the Black 70-50 win over Kelly Green, Caitlyn Cunningham nailed six from beyond the arc to propel her 24 points and join repeaters Maroon’s Huber’s and Kelly Green’s Samantha Brusha in the 20 or more points category.

Alynna Williams added 17 points of three treys for Black while Haley Meinel scored 10.

Behind Millersville’s Brusha’s 25 points off five three treys for Black’s opponent, Mia Leonard, also from Millersville, scored 13.

In Red’s narrow 45-44 win over Purple, Leah Johnson, a West Chester freshman, had three treys on the way to 17 points while the rest of the other seven players accounted for the remaining 28 points.

Purple had the same dynamic in the tough setback as Emma Blewett of Albright had three threes and scored 11 and the remaining eight players compiled the other 33 points.

The result of all this saw five teams tied at 1-1 behind the 2-0 Black and Red squads being Kelly Green, Royal Blue, Purple, Maroon, and  Sly Blue, followed by the postponed participants of Golden Sun (0-1) and Orange (0-1), the lone team with no roster dominations by other schools, and Lime Green (0-2) at the bottom.

Unlike seasons when the league had more than 10 teams, everyone will make the playoffs that begin in late July in which the bottom four teams will meet in the opening round advancing two winners to join the other six teams in the quarterfinals.

The championship game will be August 6 at 7 p.m.

As for the category of special individual performances of 20 or more points, as alluded to in the results descriptions, the pattern repeats from Tuesday openers, just three, two of them in one game, and two of the standouts from Thursday also hit the mark on opening night.

As mentioned, Maroon’s Huber, who had 23 points in the loss to Red, fired seven three-pointers on the way to the night’s top performance with 27 points to help her squad avoid a second straight loss in edging Royal Blue.

Black’s Cunningham also was prolific from beyond the arc in nailing six treys on the way to 24 points while Kelly Green’s Brusha, who hit the category on opening night, had five triplets to score 25 for Black’s opponent.

Looking Ahead

On Tuesday night to lead off the second week before the schedule goes idle across the July 4 two-night break Red and Black will be strongly favored to stay on top and unbeaten meeting the two teams that were forced to sit out the action due to the floor condition.

Black (2-0) will meet Golden Sun (0-1) at 8:15 on Court 2 while Red (2-0) will meet Orange (0-1) on Court 1, also at 8:15 p.m.

Two 1-1 teams meet at 7 on Court 1 when Royal Blue hooks up with Purple as both try to stay close to the leaders.

Another 1-1 matchup at the same time will occur on Court 3 as Maroon meets Sky Blue. The two teams on Court 3 are also CACC winter rivals.

In the remaining game, Kelly Green (1-1) meets Lime Green (0-2), which will be looking for its first win, at 7 on Court 2.

Weather Causes Indoor Havoc and First Postponement

As noted at the top of this report, outside downpour caused problems indoor when a wet floor on Court 1 caused Orange and Golden Sun, both 0-1, to not be able to play their nightcap.

The court wasn’t in great condition in the earlier game but the players who slipped on a couple of moves opted to keep the game going though their parents were less than thrilled.

Here’s   how director David Kessler filed the situation to the blog here and he’ll likely say something similar on the league’s facebook page and the Tuesday night edition of his newsletter.

“Game 2 on Court 1 was postponed because of wet, hazardous conditions on the floor.

“Excessive humidity caused condensation to form on the floor and it became much too slippery to continue.

“After conferring with game officials, players, and even some parents chimed, it was simply too dangerous for the players, especially after seeing Game 1 players (Lime-Sky) slipping when they made sharp cuts.

“Court 2 was able to play their 2 games.

“Court 3 only had a 7:00 game and it was played after standing water that had been wind swept under the door in the wake of an earlier violent storm had been mopped up”.

While it’s the first time a postponement has occurred since the recent move to Kelly Bolish Gym from the previous locale of Northeast High, it’s not the first delay in the history of the league, according to the ccommissioner.

Kessler recalled that the last postponement had been in the late 90s when the league played at Textile (currently Jefferson University).

One of the gyms had a leaky roof and because it was scheduled to be razed, the roof was not repaired.

So on Thursday, even though the league was played indoors, a game was postponed because of...…...rain.

Kessler thought something similar had happened in the NBA.

A Google search revealed that a Boston Celtic-Atlanta Hawk game had this problem on Wednesday November 28, 1990.

Unseasonably high temperatures approaching 80 had occurred in the Boston area that day.

And since the parquet floor was situated on the NHL Bruins' ice, condensation had formed on the surface.

The teams made a valiant effort but the game was halted with 10:30 remaining in the 2nd quarter.

The postponed game will be played on one of the 4 dates that Orange and Sun each have regularly scheduled 7:00 games against other teams.

The two teams will then play each other at 8:15 on the vacant Court 3.

The two teams playing a doubleheader will be a first for the league but, as Kessler joked, "The players have all played more than that when they played pick-up ball on the playground."

Directions to Kelly Bolish Gym

The gym is located on 2950 Turnpike Drive in Willow Grove Industrial Commons business park, which runs alongside the Pennsylvania Turnpike and a few miles from the Willow Grove exit for Route 611.

The drive begins off Davisville Road near the intersection of Byberry and Davisville Roads.

If you are driving north (Davisville begins by the way in Willow Grove off 611 near the Septa Willow Grove rail stop,) right before the turnpike after you cross the rail line, you make a left at the traffic light and go all the way down till you see a sign for the business park, and the gym is on the left halfway down with a big sign on the building.

If you are coming from Davisville and Byberry heading south, as soon as you cross the turnpike, you turn right and follow the last leg directions above.

Public Transit: You can take the Warminster Line and get off at Willow Grove and then it’s a short five-minute ride share to the gym.

Or from the Broadstreet Subway Olney stop and transit center, take the 55 going north up 611 and get off at Davisville Road. The bus also stops at Willow Grove Mall. Then ride share the final leg.

Admission is free.

There is a cheap snack bar offering hot dogs, water ice, sodas, hamburgers, chips and other items if you are heading straight from work and need something to hold you over.

For a fuller meal, there are plenty of good eateries within a few miles of the gym.
