The Guru’s NCAAW Weekend Local/National Roundup - II: Princeton upsets host Georgia Tech in Opener while Villanova Routs VCU in Toronto; USC Clips N.C. State
By Mel Greenberg @womhoopsguru
It was a 2-2 split Sunday for the locals, Villanova bouncing back from it’s home loss to Fairfield to blast VCU 74-40 in Toronto, Canada, while Princeton became the last of the 13 to open the season and did it in stunning fashion as the preseason Ivy favorites rallied to beat the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 67-61.
But another sweeps day was marred as Rutgers at home after two wins fell 71-54 to Stony Brook of the Coast Athletic Association 71-54 at Jersey Mike’s Arena in Piscataway, N.J., while Lafayette fell to 0-3 losing its home opener in the Kirby Sports Center in overtime 82-79 to Le Moyne in Easton, Pa.
Nationally, the huge upset came in a battle of Associated Press ranked teams as No. 18 Southern Cal rallied to nip No.9 North Carolina State 69-68 in the Ally Tipoff in Charlotte, N.C. as freshman Jazzy Davidson scored 21 for the Women of Troy (2-0), including the go-ahead basket with 8.2 seconds left.
Because the two opponents were both ranked, the game with the Wolfpack nipped produced the only loss among the 16 ranked teams in action.
No. 1 UConn in the Huskies’ home opener on campus in Storrs hung the 12th NCAA championship banner and then blasted Florida State 99-67.
Villanova Handles VCU and Princeton Upsets Georgia Tech
In the win by the Wildcats (2-1) in Toronto giving sophomore Jasmine Bascoe an enjoyable homecoming, Villanova moved from a slow start trailing 11-10 after one period to erupt on a 27-12 advantage the next ten minutes for a 37-23 lead at the half.
The differential grew further in the third, the Wildcats outscoring VCU 21-10 and even more in the final period with a 16-7 differential.
VCU of the Atlantic 10 fell to 1-1.
Bascoe had 17 points, five rebounds, and four assists, while freshman Brooke Bender off the bench scored 16, and senior forward Denae Carter was 5-of-6 from the field for 12 points.
VCU’s Mary-Anna Asare scored 13 points.
The Wildcats had 11 makes from deep in the contest above the border.
Villanova has little time to celebrate, however, with Princeton coming to Finneran Pavilion to play at 7 p.m. on Wednesday on ESPN+.
The Tigers in their win over Georgia Tech (1-1) in Atlanta were led by second team all-Ivy Fadima Tall, who had a double-double 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Olivia Hutcherson scored 15 points, Madison St. Rose, healed from the injury that cost her most of last season, scored 13 points, and Ashley Chea collected 12 points.
Georgia Tech’s Catherine Alben scored 15, Ines Noguero scored 13 points, and Brianna Turnage grabbed 10 boards.
Rutgers Downed by Stony Brook and Lafayette Nipped by LeMoyne
Both teams are now 2-1, the Seawolves rising, in a game in which there were exchanges and runs with Stony Brook after taking a five-point lead into the final period held on and dominated the rest of the way.
Nene Ndiaye scored 16 for the Scarlet Knights and Imani Lester scored 11 with Janae Walker leading the hosts with six rebounds.
“We just struggled to get stops, we struggled at both ends of the floor,” said Rutgers coach Coquese Washington, whose team hosts the Atlantic 10’s Rhode Island next Friday at 11 a.m. on the B1G+ suscription network out of the Big Ten.
“We couldn’t get in a rhythm on offense and couldn’t hunker down when we needed,” Washington said. “Stony Brook did a good job limiting where we couldn’t get enough good looks, they were tough shots.”
It was Stony Brooks’ third win over a Big Ten opponent as Janay Brantley scored 23 points and Caitlin Frost scored 21 with 10 boards for a double-double. Chloe Oliver scored 10 and Sandra Frau Garcia dealt five assists.
In Easton, Lafayette (0-3) seemed ready to win its first by coming home following opening road losses at Villanova and Rider but freshman guard Haylie Adamski’s 22 points fueled by four makes from beyond the arc and Talia Zurinskas’ 20 points were not enough against the Leopards’ opponents from the Northeast Conference.
Tasha Chudy was also in double figures with 11 points but Le Moyne also scored in high double figures with Eli Clark and Ashley Buragas each scoring 20 points.
Kayden Clark added 17.
Le Moyne dominated the boards 53-32.
