The Guru Report: Villanova and Drexel Rally For Overtime Road Wins

QUEENS, N.Y. – To hear voices on the Villanova women’s basketball team bus Sunday night describe their Big East weekend road trip sweep of Seton Hall down in South Orange, N.J., on Friday afternoon and their comeback 48 hours later to gain a 67-62 overtime triumph here against St. John’s in the Red Storm’s Carnesecca Arena, “it was the weekend of two miracles.”
Wildcats coach Harry Perretta recalling how things were back in November when his largely inexperienced roster struggled with an 0-3 start, he smiled and said, “I would have said zero chances on both of them. Zero. Not even close.”
As it turned out, Perretta’s concerns would have been misplaced, not that he was wrong for harboring them.
Over the years, even the best of Villanova teams as well as other Big East noteworthy squads have had their share of problems trying to at least get a split out of the trip here, one of the toughest stops on the schedule.
And at the outset it seemed it would be more of the same when the Red Storm took an 11-point lead early in the second quarter.
But the Wildcats (8-6,3-1 Big East) fought their way back on the work of redshirt freshman Maddy Siegrist and Mary Gedaka, the daughter of former Big East player of the year Lisa Angelotti.
Siegrist, one of the outstanding newcomers in the conference, is from Poughkeepsie, N.Y, and had her own fan club at the game while another group of Villanova fans consisted of former players and colleagues of Perretta wanting to see him while still on active duty.
As has been the situation at each ‘Nova game to date, Perretta was presented with a gift by the home team prior to the opening tip.
Near the end of the game here in regulation Gedaka went to the line with the Wildcats ahead by four but she missed both and the Red Storm (10-5, 3-1) fought back aided by a pair of consecutive Villanova turnovers to tie the score at 56.
St. John’s then had a chance to win but Tiana England’s shot missed the basket and the game went into overtime.
Bridget Herlihy gave the visitors a chance to take control, putting the Wildcats ahead by four in the overtime on a pair of shots but the Red Storm came back to tie and so it went until with 40 seconds left, Gedaka made up for the earliet missed foul shots by taking a pass from Raven James and hitting a three from the top of the key to break a deadlock.
St. John’s had a chance to tie but Alisha Kebbe was unable to connect with a shot and James grabbed the rebound, was fouled, went to the line and hit both free throw opportunities to clinch the win.
The game was billed as a highlight of two of the Big East top freshmen, but while Siegrist, who has won several conference newcomer of the week honors, had her league-leading fifth double-double of 22 points and 15 rebounds playing in all but three seconds against St. John’s, Leilani Correa in 27 minutes scored just seven for the Red Storm.
Gedaka in 44 minutes had 21 points and six rebounds for Villanova, Herlihy scored 11, James had seven points and dealt six assists, and Cameron Onken grabbed six rebounds.
England had a near double-double for the Red Storm with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Qadashah Hoppe scored 14, and Alissa Alston scored 10.
After the season-opening three losses, Villanova has won eight of 11 games and in the series with the Red Storm, the Wildcats have won 8 of the last 12 and lead 40-28 overall.
Villanova is back home this weekend in Finneran Pavilion playing an 11:30 a.m. game hosting Butler Friday morning and then hosting Xavier Sunday before playing a last non-conference game hosting Penn in a Big Five showdown on January 15.
Drexel Hugh Rally Prevents Lost Weekend But Delaware Comes Up Empty.
It seemed both Drexel and Delaware on Sunday were both headed for an empty showing away from home in season-opening games in the Colonial Athletic Association, but Drexel erased a 15-point deficit it held late and the Dragons then beat UNCW 73-72 in Trask Coliseum in Wilmington, N.C., while the Blue Hens fell 84-73 to Charleston at TD Arena in South Carolina.
Drexel (8-6, 1-1 CAA) trailed by 13 at the start of the final period but outscored UNCW 24-11 to force the extra period and then topped the Seahawks on a pair of foul shots from Niki Metzel for a three-point lead.
UNCW (4-9, 1-1) had a chance to tie, scoring a layup with 1.6 seconds left in the overtime but GiGi Smith, who had a game-high 32 points, missed a foul shot and Metzel got the rebound to end the game.
Bailey Greenberg, who fouled out in the extra period, had 22 points, helped by 10-for-11 from the line, and dealt four assists. She also gained her 1,500th career point during the game.
Drexel, which had a 30-11 advantage from its bench, hosts Northeastern at the Daskalakis Athletic Center Friday night and Hofstra Sunday.
Mariah Leonard scored 13 points and Aubree Brown dealt eight assists.
Meanwhile, Delaware (4-9, 0-2 CAA) wasted efforts from Nicole Enabosi, who had 21 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, and Samone DeFreese and Kayla Shaw, who each scored 16 points, while DeFreese grabbed 13 rebounds.
Charleston (9-4, 2-0), which beat Drexel at home Friday, got 24 points from Deja Ford, 19 points and eight rebounds from Latrice Perkins, and 12 from Arynn Eady.
“You have to win every 50-50 balls, and you have to win the hustle plays,” said Delaware coach Natasha Adair. “In conference, it’s going to come down to this.”
Delaware heads home to host Hofstra Friday night in the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark and then Northeastern on Sunday.
Rutgers Push at Finish Captures Big Ten Game at Purdue

A Big Ten clash on Monday night has Ohio State visiting Maryland in College Park.

Saint Joseph’s is still on the road in the A-10 visiting Massachusetts at noon while La Salle is at Duquesne in Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. in another A-10 game.
The Sunday games are all spoken to above in the team recaps but will be mentioned again later in the week.
The one exception not previously mentioned is Rutgers returns home to host a Big Ten game against Nebraska at 2 p.m.
