Philly WBB Summer League: Team Black (D2-Jefferson) Finishes Unbeaten With First Regular Season Crown
By Bob Heller and Mel Greenberg
HATBORO, Pa. — Unbeaten and No. 1 going into the playoffs.
That would be Team Black, also known as D2 Jefferson University, which had an easy 97-61 win over Team Purple Tuesday night to finish the regular nine-game schedule unbeaten and at the top of the standings for the first time in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA Certified Women’s Summer Basketball League.
In recent years at Kelly Bolish Gym, home of the AAU Renegades, the final night is usually wild with some seedings at stake, last minute switches, some games down to the wire, and even the time your Guru was ready for the task to break a six-way tie for the final two spots when a 12-team configuration didn’t allow everyone going to the postseason and four had to be eliminated.
Not so Tuesday when it was so uneventful by comparison that Golden Sun’s Myonie Williamson out of D3 Cabrini and Radnor High was the only person to achieve the Guru’s 20-points or more individual performance list, scoring 26 in the win.
That was her first for the summer, making it 35 times the milestone was reached by 19 players on the list.
Interestingly, no one on Black all summer from the first night on June 19 through Tuesday hit the mark but had a balanced machine, though Maroon, also known as D2 USciences, Black’s CACC rival in the winter, pounded the nets for 705 points, losing only to Black.
None of the four games Tuesday were close, though Red/Royal was clompetitive in the second half until Red pulled away.
Lime losing to Sky Blue, 2-0, involving two teams already eliminated from the six bye slots, became the second forfeit of the summer, still extremely low considering how classes, work, camps, and vacations have an impact at times, especially in the early 7 p.m. games.
The final tally and seed slots held firm from Thursday’s positioning and the two ties below to set Thursday’s first-round pairings set themselves through head-to-head results.
There were ties for third and fifth prior to the opening tip but the outcomes left everyone alone in their slots from Black, Maroon, Red (also known as D2 Kutztown), Royal (they played each other), Golden Sun and Purple.
Kelly Green (also known as D2 Chestnut) with the loss to Golden Sun, and Sky Blue, also known as D3 Arcadia, with the forfeit win over Lime, tied for seventh but Kelly Green got the higher place based on a season win over Sky Blue.
That left Orange, also known as D3 Penn State-Abington, and Lime tied for ninth but Orange’s win last Thursday over Lime earned the ninth slot.
Looking Ahead
And so the playoffs begin Thursday with a first round-doubleheader on Court 1 as No. 7 Kelly Green (2-7) meets No. 10 Lime (1-7) at 7 p.m, before No. 8 Sky Blue (2-7) meets No. 9 Orange (1-7) at 8:15 p.m.
During the season on the second night, and this is something to note, Lime thumped Kelly Green 76-55 as Lynn Konstanzer, an Ursinus junior out of Pennridge, scored 20 points for the winners, followed by Katie Fisher, a West Chester junior out of Strathaven, and Ashlyn Wert, a Saint Joseph’s junior, each scored 13, and Gabby Troisi, a West Chester junior out of Pope John Paul II, scored 12.
Shannon Glenn, a Chestnut Hill junior out of Archbishop Ryan, scored 17, for Kelly Green, and Lauren Crim, a Chestnut Hill freshman out of Lansdale Catholic, had 14 points.
In the previous Sky Blue vs. Orange meeting, it was Sky Blue posting a 58-45 win. Neither had yet to gain a triumph before their match up on July 10, which came off the week-long break for the July 4th holiday.
Taylor Fritz, an Arcadia sophomore out of Philadelphia Academy Charter, had 15 points for Sky Blue, Camille Menns, an Arcadia senior, had 11, and Joelle Bridges, an Arcadia freshman out of Springside, scored 10.
Sydney Barrow, a PSU-Abington junior out of John Bartram, scored 18 for Orange.
Next Tuesday the other six with the byes are joined by Thursday’s winners in the quarterfinals with potential re-seeds in play.
Black begins its quest for its first playoff crown playing either the (8) Sky Blue/(9) Orange winner at 7 p.m. on Court 1 or (10) Lime if an upset is pulled on (7) Kelly Green, which is possible.
Conversely No. 2 Maroon at 8:15 p.m. on Court 1 will meet Kelly Green unless 10th seed Lime prevails and then Maroon gets the Sky Blue-Orange winner.
In the other two games, at 7 p.m. on Court 2, No. 3 Red meets No. 6 Purple. During the season recently on July 19th, Red won 66-52, snapping a two-game losing streak, with five players scoring nine or more points, paced by Abby Beyer, an Elizabethtown senior, who had 12 points.
The D2 Holy Family duo of Jada Smith, a sophomore out of Merion Mercy, and Elizabeth Radley, a junior out of Bishop Eustace, scored 16 and 14, respectively.
Now, here’s Bob with the Thursday recaps and then back with the scoreboard.
RECAPS
Team Red 82 Team Royal Blue 69
In the battle for the number three seed for the upcoming playoffs in the Philadelphia/ Suburban Women’s Basketball Summer League, Team Red battled with Team Royal Blue for nearly three quarters before using a late run in the third quarter to pull away and earn an 82-69 win in their regular season finale.
Team Red finished the regular season with a 7-2 record. Royal Blue finished 6-3 on the season with the loss and will be the #4 seed in the upcoming playoffs.
Red placed five players in double figures led by Division I Lafayette College sophomore Natalie Kucowski’s 15 points.
Kutztown junior Gabbi Wright added 13 points while fellow KU players Karen Lapkiewicz and Kalee Fuegal had ten points apiece. Elizabethtown College sophomore Veronica Christ had 13 points.
Division III Amherst University junior Hannah Fox was the lone Royal Blue player in double figures with 16 points.
A late third quarter run by Red allowed them to put some distance between themselves and Royal.
Rachel Ryan of Royal cut the Red lead to five 46-41 with about four minutes left in the quarter before Red produced a 14-2 run to take a 17-point lead after three quarters 60-43.
The run followed a back-and –forth battle in the first two quarters that saw 13 lead changes and Red holding a slim 31-28 advantage at the halftime break.
Red’s lead oscillated between four and seven points for much of the first part of the third quarter before the run that solidified their double digit advantage.
In the fourth quarter Royal Blue, led by Lauren Fortiscue and Kylie Webb’s scoring efforts, opened the period with a 9-4 run to close within 12, 64-52.
Red countered with ten straight points to take their biggest lead at 74-52 with just under two minutes to go in the game. Fox scored the final four points for Royal Blue to round out the scoring.
Team Maroon 81 Team Orange 33
Team Maroon again was dominant from beyond the arc; making 15 three-pointers as they cruised to an easy 81-33 win over Team Orange in the early game on Court One.
Maroon finished the regular season in second place with an 8-1 record. Orange finished at 1-8 and secured the #9 seed by virtue of their win last week over Team Lime Green who had to forfeit their game due to a shortage of players.
Maroon, also known as Division II USciences, placed four players in double figures and had four others scoring at least five points in the contest.
The duo of Jess Huber and Jordan Vitelli again lit up the scoreboard, combining for nine three pointers between them while scoring 18 points apiece. All 18 of Huber’s points came from the long ball as she sank a season-high six three pointer field goals. Brigit Coleman and Irisa Ye added 11 and 10 points respectively.
Shayna Rodriguez made four three point baskets of her own to lead Orange, also known as Division III Penn State Abington, with 12 points - the lone Orange player to reach double figures.
Maroon scored the first nine points of the game and held Orange to just one field goal (a trey from Rodriguez) in the opening quarter as they took command 23-4, with Coleman and Huber each knocking down two three point goals.
A Huber trey opened the second quarter followed by five straight points from Taylor Hamm and an Alyx McKiernan three-ball to complete an 11-0 run and push the lead to 34-4 en route to a 45-9 halftime lead.
The Maroon squad increased their lead to 61-19 after three periods. Rodriguez and Symantha Marrero had two three-point goals apiece in the fourth quarter for Orange before Maroon closed out the game on top 81-33.
Team Black 97 Team Purple 61
Team Black finished the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record as they cruised to a 97-61 win over Team Purple in the other early game on Tuesday.
Black, also known as Jefferson University, again used a balanced scoring effort with five players in double figures. Erin Maher led Black with 19 points while Haley Meinel added 16. Caitlyn Cunningham chipped in 13 points while Alynna Williams and Beverly Kum had ten points apiece.
Incoming Holy Family University freshman Molly Masciantonio led Team Purple with 14 points. Division I La Salle University’s Michelle Nicholls added 13 points while Brady Wassell, also an incoming HFU freshman added ten points.
Purple finished the regular season with a 4-5 record and secured the number six seed for the upcoming playoffs.
Black took control of this contest early, using a 20-7 run over the final five minutes of the first quarter to lead 28-10.
Purple cut the lead back down to single digits in the second quarter with a 14-5 spurt in the first 4:12 to close within nine 33-24.
Masciantonio and Wassell led the charge with four points apiece in the run. Williams keyed a small rally to increase Black’s lead back to double figures late in the quarter before Purple again cut the lead back to nine by halftime, 47-38.
A 12-2 spurt by Black to open the third quarter pushed Black’s lead back to double digits where it would stay for the rest of the game. Black outscored Purple 29-12 in the third quarter 21-11 in the fourth quarter to cruise to the 36-point win.
Team Golden Sun 82 Team Kelly Green 69
Team Golden Sun got off to a slow start in their game against Team Kelly Green, also known as Division II Chestnut Hill College; however a strong second half propelled Sun to an 82-69 win.
The win secures the number five seed for Golden Sun who finished the regular season with a 5-4 record.
Kelly Green finishes with a 2-7 record and secures the number seven seed by virtue of their win over Team Sky Blue last week Sky Blue earned a forfeit win over Lime Green earlier in the evening to produce their 2-7 final record.
Myonie Williamson led all scorers with 26 points to pace the Golden Sun squad. Samantha Brusha added 14 points while Deja King and Fiona Aromando had 12 points apiece. Nia Holland rounded out the double figure scorers with ten points.
Rachel Millan led Kelly Green with 19 points while Kate Seeman added 14. Caela Russell and Brianna Cullen had 11 points apiece.
Kelly used a 12-5 first quarter run to jump out to a 16-9 lead and lead by five after the first period 18-13.
Golden Sun opened the second quarter with a 12-4 run to take a 25-22 lead before Cullen added a field goal and a free throw on Kelly Green’s next two possessions to tie the game at 25-25.
Three straight baskets from Brusha put Golden Sun back up by six, 31-25. Millan’s basket broke Kelly within two before Golden Sun scored five of the final seven points in the quarter to lead 36-31 at the break.
Williamson and Brusha led Golden sun on an 11-2 uprising to open the third quarter, taking a 47-33 lead. Williamson’s basket late in the third quarter produced Golden Sun’s biggest lead at 55-39 before Kelly closed the gap to 12, 59-47 by quarters end.
Kelly Green had one more run in them, scoring seven straight points to open the fourth quarter to pull within five 59-54. Sun followed with seven straight of their own to go back up by double figures, 66-54. Two baskets from Williamson and a bucket from King led to Golden Sun’s largest lead of the game at 78-59 with 2:15 left. Kelly finished the game on a 10-4 run with Millan scoring half of them to close out the game.
