Temple Coach Tonya Cardoza Contract Extended

PHILADELPHIA – Temple University has announced a contract extension for Tonya Cardoza, the all-time winningest coach in Owls' women's basketball history. Cardoza's new contract will keep her on North Broad Street through the 2021-22 season.
 
"Tonya has done an incredible job in continuing a tradition of excellence in our women's basketball program ," said Temple University Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft.  "We are fortunate to have Tonya at Temple, and I hope that she will lead our Owls for years to come."
 
Now in her 10th season at Temple, Cardoza is 193-111 overall, including 99-41 between the American Athletic Conference and the Atlantic 10. She has guided the Owls to seven postseason appearances, including four NCAA bids, a WNIT Final Four, and a WNIT quarterfinals appearance. Cardoza has earned Coach of the Year honors six times in her career, one each in the American Athletic Conference (2017) and Atlantic 10 (2011) and four times in the Philadelphia Big 5 (2017, 2011, 2010, 2009).
 
"I'm extremely thankful for the opportunity to lead this program for years to come," said Cardoza. "I think we've built something really special here, and I'm grateful for the support and commitment that Dr. Kraft and the rest of our administration has shown to women's basketball at Temple."
 
Cardoza's most recent season was one of her best, as Temple went 24-8 overall, earned an NCAA bid, and finished second in the tough American Athletic Conference. The Owls were ranked for five weeks during the season, and reached #18 on the NCAA RPI list, the program's best-ever ranking. Cardoza also led the Owls to a pair of wins over ranked opponents, as the team knocked off #16/17 DePaul at home and #20/21 USF on the road.
 
The 2016-17 season marked the third consecutive 20-win season for Cardoza's Owls, and the seventh 20-win campaign in her tenure.  In 2017, senior guard Feyonda Fitzgerald earned a WBCA All-America nod, just the fourth player in Temple history to earn such accolades. Fitzgerald, who was selected by Indiana with the 20th overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft, was also a first team American Athletic Conference selection and the Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Year.
 
The success of Temple's 2016-17 squad garnered Cardoza several individual honors, among them being named one of 10 finalists for the WBCA National Coach of the Year Award. Cardoza shared American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors with UConn's Geno Auriemma and was also named the Philadelphia Big 5 Coach of the Year.
 
Prior to arriving at Temple, Cardoza spent 14 years as assistant coach at UConn under Hall of Famer, Auriemma. During her time with the Huskies, she helped guide the team to an unprecedented 465-41 record, five National Championships, seven Final Four appearances, and six No. 1 National Rankings in the final Associated Press poll.
