ORLANDO, Fla. -- The WNBA’s Chicago Sky, and Delaware native Elena Delle Donne, will play a preseason game against Washington Mystics at University of Delaware, her alma mater on Tuesday night.
In an emphatic attempt to give the fans what they want, the Sky will stay on the road from her and travel to where Delle Donne, last season's unanimous choice for rookie of the year, played youth basketball and collegiate basketball.
Reports from Delaware indicate few, if any, tickets remain for the game in the 5,000-seat Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, which often had sellouts for her career with the Blue Hens.
Delle Donne, who won three state titles at Ursuline Academy in Wilmington, also brought Delaware to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time in 2013.
She is eager to play in front of her fans, supporters, and family at home with the team that won its first Eastern Conference regular season title last summer and made its first playoff appearance in seven tries.
“I can’t wait to get back to Delaware and play in front of the home fans there. It will be really nice to play on my home court again.” said Delle Donne, who also played volleyball for the Blue Hens.
“I think it’s great that the community is showing their support," she continued. "Instead of playing internationally this season, I stayed back to not only get in better shape and work on my game, but to help develop the WNBA brand.”
Delle Donne, who put on 12 pounds of muscle to build herself up, spent the months in between WNBA seasons to coach clinics and camps and help with league exposure.
Events such as the preseason tournament at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando this past weekend here contribute to brand and league development.
Delle Donne and the Sky beat the Indiana Fever Friday night in a double-header event that coincides with nationally-known AAU Spring Fling II. The youth girls’ basketball event will have roughly 1,500 participating players.
They lost to the defending champion Minnesota Lynx on Sunday.
“It’s a great opportunity to be in a tournament-type atmosphere to get ready for the season," Delle Donne said. "I have great memories from AAU basketball.
"I remember playing AAU and looking up to WNBA players. That was my destination and my goal and where I wanted to go. I knew the WNBA was there and that is where I wanted to be.”
