Guru's Philly Summer League Report: Lime Green And Black Still Unbeaten At 5-0

HATBORO, Pa. -- The unbeatens are down to just two teams in the Philadelphia/Suburban NCAA Women's Basketball Summer League following Thursday's slate of six games at the Kelly Bolish Gymnasium, home of the AAU Renengades in Lower Bucks County.
Defending champion Lime Green (5-0) used a balanced attack paced by Dana Mitchell, a 2010 St. Bonaventure graduate, who scored 13 points in a 62-46 win over Hunter Green (4-1), which suffered its first loss of the season, while Kutztown senior Ashley Wood had 18 points to spur Black (5-0), coached by her father Keith, to an 80-53 win over the Royal Blue (2-3) squad, which consists of the Division II Holy Family contingent.
Adding to the Lime Green offense, Elizabeth Sharlow, an incoming Lehigh freshman, and recent Villanova graduate Megan Pearson each scored nine points.
All class designations in these posts throughout the season refer to players' statuses when they return to school in the fall. Alums are mentioned as such.
Sarah Fairbanks, an incoming Saint Joseph's freshman, scored 10 points for Hunter Green, while Kathryn Stockbower, who graduated this season from Division III Swarthmore but completed her eligibility a year ago, scored eight points, Saint Joseph's junior Erin Shields scored seven points, Saint Joseph's senior Shelby Smith scored six points, and incoming Nazareth College freshman Lindsey Kelly scored six points.
Stockbower, who set the NCAA Division III career record for double doubles at Swarthmore, made her season debut after returning from Germany, where she was on a Fullbright Scholarship. She'll be entering Temple medical school in the fall.
Several other players in the league also made their season debut, including Villanova sophomore Kendall Burton on Purple, Boston U. senior Danielle Callahan and Lehigh sophomore Katelyn O'Reilly on Lime Green, and Hunter Green's Dana Albalancy, a Connecticut College junior who had been traveling in Israel.
"Amazing with all the movement you get during the season in terms of players who have to miss games, or arrive too late from work, or suffer injuries, this is the longest we have gone to date without any of the 12 teams having to forfeit a game," said longtime commissioner David Kessler.

In Black's win, Villanova sophomore Emily Leer had had 16 points while incoming Lehigh freshman Kerry Kinek scored 14 points.

Under NCAA rules concerning sanctioned summer leagues, only two teammates from the same Division I school can play together, except incoming freshmen can be added to the limit.
However, entire Division II and Division III teams can play together. There are four such squads in the local competition, and all are Division II outfits.
Two of Holy Family's winter rivals from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play together -- University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) is actually the Kelly Green Squad, or vice versa depending on your viewpoint, while the Orange squad is really Philadelphia University.
Additionally, West Chester University of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division competes as the Vegas Gold team.
Admission is free to the league competition, which occurs Tuesday and Thursday nights through the end of the month before the top eight finishers will battle in the playoffs that include one-and-done formats in the quarterfinals and semifinals and a best-of-three duel in the championship series.
The gym is located in the Willow Grove Industrial Commons business park at the end of Turnpike Drive, which begins at Davisville Road, about a mile below the Davisville &Byberry Roads intersection and also not far from the Route 611 exit of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Doubleheaders on game nights occur on three courts with the openers tipping off at 7 p.m. and the nightcaps, barring overtime, getting under way at 8:15 p.m.
There is also a concession stand with reasonably priced items and the offerings include hamburgers, hot dogs, sodas, juices, bottled water, Italian water ice, potato chips and other foods.
Highlighting the other four games from Thursday night, following a night off on Tuesday to allow for those heading places to celebrate the July Fourth holiday, Ash Gray (3-2) snapped a two-game losing streak and moved into a three-way tie with Cardinal Red (3-2) and Purple (3-2) for fourth place a game behind Hunter Green and two behind the two unbeaten frontrunners.
Ash Gray got 13 points each from Division II Chestnut Hill senior Lindsay Alexander and Division III Deleware Valley College sophomore Grace Mirack in a 71-61 win over the Vegas Gold (1-4).
Da'Kiya Johnson, a transfer from Santa Monica College in Calfornia heading for Chestnut Hill, added 12 points to the Ash Gray scoring attack, as did incoming Gettysburg freshman Jessica Porter.
Stephanie Keyes, a sophomore this season at West Chester, turned in the night's overall top scoring performance, pouring 21 points into the nets for Vegas Gold. Kendall Benovy, another Golden Rams sophomore, scored 18 points, while incoming freshman Brittany Sicinski scored 12 points.
Cardinal Red came up with a 69-53 win over Orange (1-4), the Philadelphia University unit, as Jamie Insel, a junior at Assumption College, scored 17 points, Lafayette junior Kelly Loughney scored 16 points, Kent State 2007 graduate Lakia Stewart scored 14 points, and Division III Cabrini 2009 graduate Brittany McLeod scored 12 points.
Rams senior co-captain Taylor Peltzer, whose father Lou starred for Saint Joseph's in the early 1970s, scored 14 points, senior Kristen Blye, the other co-captain for next season, scored eight points, as did sophomore Victoria Arnao.
Purple held its ground with a 78-64 win over Columbia Blue (1-4), whose coach Steve Flynn was in Orlando, Fla., with several AAU Renegades squads competiting in a tournament.

Alex Wheatley, an incoming freshman at three-time defending Ivy champion Princeton, scored 14 points..
In the closest game of the night in terms of final score the USP-Kelly Green squad (2-3) left Gold (0-5) as the only team still looking for a win after triumphing 60-52 to complete the list of six games.
Devils sophomore Carolyn Edwards scored 13 points for Kelly Green while Brianne Traub, a projected 2017 graduate under USP's work-study program, matched that total and incoming freshman Elizabeth Birman scored 11 points.
Alexandra Yantzi, a Lehigh junior, scored 20 points for Gold, while Gabrielle Vass, a Lebanon Valley junior, scored seven points. Michelle McCaughern, a recently graduate from La Salle, scored six points, as did Lehigh senior MaryBeth Eagan.
Crowd Braves The Heat
Because the gym is not as tepid as the former digs of the league at Northeast High in Philadelphia used to be when outside temperatures approached and hit triple digits, another nice crowd was on hand.
Guru's hint: If it looks like it will be a small hike to the front door on hot nights, there is usually plenty of parking around the back close to the rear doors.
Some notables on hand to watch the games were former La Salle coach John Miller, who has made Mount Saint Joseph's High into a perennial state high school title contender, and Villanova senior Jesse Carey, who is rehabbing from knee surgery.
Several of Miller's past players are in the league.
Last Thursday 1997 Towson grad Cheryl Herzog was at the games with her niece. She played in the league from 1997-2001 and today she is now a successful personal trainer. Her email is trainwithcheryl@gmail.com.
Also in the crowd on Tuesday night was former Temple star Fatima "TNT" Maddox, who is the first female member of the famed basketball entertainment squad The Harlem Globetrotters since 1993.
She currently has time off and plans to return to watch the league next week.
The Globetrotters are headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo., also home of the USOC and USABasketball where part of the area has been devastated by the ongoing wildfires in the Western states.
Maddox said everything is ok at her end regarding her residence in the Springs and all her people are safe.
In 1993, the last female Globetrotter prior to Maddox was former Iowa star Jolette Law, who later became Rutgers associate head coach to her Hawkeyes coach C. Vivian Stringer before becoming head coach at Illinois through last season.
Law was recently hired as an assistant at Tennessee to Holly Warlick, the former longtime aide to the legendary Pat Summitt, who last April stepped aside to become coach emeritus in the wake of her ongoing battle with early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type.
"I need to be down South anyhow because I can be closer to my mom, who has gotten older," Law told the Guru last month when he was in Knoxville attending the 2012 induction ceremonies for the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
Incidentally, the 2013 Class to be inducted next spring will be announced a week from this Monday night during ESPN's broadcast of the doubleheader in Washington at the Verizon Center, home of the WNBA Mystics, featuring the USA Basketball women's and men's squads exhibition against their counterparts from Brazil.
It will be the first competition for the women's team following the conclusion of the first half of the WNBA season next Friday as the pro league takes a month's break until the London Games are completed in early August.
Rules Note
In Thursday's newsletter,which Commissioner Kessler distributes before every game to all in attendance, he noted the following: Because there is no shot clock the 5-second "closely guarded" rule will be enforced.
Basically, this means the offensive team must keep the ball moving from player to player if the ballhandler (while on the offensive side of the court) is being closely guarded (within 3 feet).
If the ballhandler fails to advance the ball, this will be called a violation, and the ball will be turned over to the defensive team. And, of course, the 10 second rule to advance the ball from the backcourt to the frontcourt will also be enforced.
Additionally, players are asked to co-operate by removing all jewlery before competing. And the commissioner thanks you and wishes continued success to all.

Looking Ahead
Here's the schedule for Tuesday night, with records, and Thursday night, which obviously won't have records until the next report covering Tuesday's action.
On Tuesday, July 10th, in the 7 p.m. games Black (5-0) will be getting a challenge, record-wise, meeting Hunter Green (4-1) on Court 1. Royal Blue (2-3) meets Columbia Blue (1-4) on Court 2, while Lime Green (5-0) will meet Gold (0-5) on Court 3.
The three 8:15 p.m. games have Ash Gray (3-2) meeting Orange (1-4) on Court 1; Purple (3-2) and Cardinal Red (3-2) will be breaking a deadlock meeting on Court 2; and Vegas Gold (1-4) and Kelly Green (2-3). will meet on Court 3.
On Thursday, July 12th, the 7 p.m. games match Cardinal Red against Royal Blue on Court 1; Gold against Orange on Court 2; and Kelly Green against Lime Green on Court 3.
The 8:15 p.m. contests match Hunter Green against Purple on Court 1; Vegas Gold against Columbia Blue on Court 2; and Ash Gray against Black on Court 3.
Lime and Black might stay unbeaten after next week's action, though even with a loss they could be 1-2 going into the following week when they will collide Tuesday night July at 7 p.m. on Court 1.
The Lime team has put up the most total points to date this season while the Black squad has allowed the fewest.

Breaking Ties
Here's how seeds would occur if the playoffs were determined right at this moment.
Eventually the competition may make things clearer than now but for the sake of some organization here's how the order within ties were set, especially since there's not a lot of head-to-head.
1st Place: Breaking tie of Lime Green vs. Black. -- Lime Green beating Hunter Green is a better quality win since there's no head-to-head yet.
3rd Place: Hunter Green -- record. No tie to break.
4th Place: Breaking tie of Purple vs. Ash Gray vs. Cardinal Red. Once entire standings determined, within this group, Cardinal Red gets a head-to-head over Ash Gray, Purple has no head-to-head but no negative loss within the group, and that is better than Ash Gray losing head to head to Cardinal Red.
7th Place: Breaking tie of Kelly Green vs. Royal Blue. Kelly Green beating Purple tops Royal Blue Blue beating Ash Gray but not by much.

Trish Watson, a Penn State-Abington junior, scored 20 points for Purple in its win, while Kendall Burton, the Villanova sophomore, made her season debut scoring 14 points, Ithaca College senior Devin Shea scored 12 points and Lehigh junior Marisa Repasch scored 11 points.
Taylor Bryant, a Dublin High graduate heading for nationally-ranked Delaware as a freshman this fall, had another strong outing, scoring 20 points for Columbia Blue, while Hannah Rose Nussbaum, an incoming freshman at Franklin & Marshall, scored 16 points. Alex Wheatley, an incoming freshman at three-time defending Ivy champion Princeton, scored 14 points..
In the closest game of the night in terms of final score the USP-Kelly Green squad (2-3) left Gold (0-5) as the only team still looking for a win after triumphing 60-52 to complete the list of six games.
Devils sophomore Carolyn Edwards scored 13 points for Kelly Green while Brianne Traub, a projected 2017 graduate under USP's work-study program, matched that total and incoming freshman Elizabeth Birman scored 11 points.
Alexandra Yantzi, a Lehigh junior, scored 20 points for Gold, while Gabrielle Vass, a Lebanon Valley junior, scored seven points. Michelle McCaughern, a recently graduate from La Salle, scored six points, as did Lehigh senior MaryBeth Eagan.
Crowd Braves The Heat
Because the gym is not as tepid as the former digs of the league at Northeast High in Philadelphia used to be when outside temperatures approached and hit triple digits, another nice crowd was on hand.
Guru's hint: If it looks like it will be a small hike to the front door on hot nights, there is usually plenty of parking around the back close to the rear doors.
Some notables on hand to watch the games were former La Salle coach John Miller, who has made Mount Saint Joseph's High into a perennial state high school title contender, and Villanova senior Jesse Carey, who is rehabbing from knee surgery.
Several of Miller's past players are in the league.
Last Thursday 1997 Towson grad Cheryl Herzog was at the games with her niece. She played in the league from 1997-2001 and today she is now a successful personal trainer. Her email is trainwithcheryl@gmail.com.
Also in the crowd on Tuesday night was former Temple star Fatima "TNT" Maddox, who is the first female member of the famed basketball entertainment squad The Harlem Globetrotters since 1993.
She currently has time off and plans to return to watch the league next week.
The Globetrotters are headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo., also home of the USOC and USABasketball where part of the area has been devastated by the ongoing wildfires in the Western states.
Maddox said everything is ok at her end regarding her residence in the Springs and all her people are safe.
In 1993, the last female Globetrotter prior to Maddox was former Iowa star Jolette Law, who later became Rutgers associate head coach to her Hawkeyes coach C. Vivian Stringer before becoming head coach at Illinois through last season.
Law was recently hired as an assistant at Tennessee to Holly Warlick, the former longtime aide to the legendary Pat Summitt, who last April stepped aside to become coach emeritus in the wake of her ongoing battle with early onset dementia, Alzheimer's type.
"I need to be down South anyhow because I can be closer to my mom, who has gotten older," Law told the Guru last month when he was in Knoxville attending the 2012 induction ceremonies for the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
Incidentally, the 2013 Class to be inducted next spring will be announced a week from this Monday night during ESPN's broadcast of the doubleheader in Washington at the Verizon Center, home of the WNBA Mystics, featuring the USA Basketball women's and men's squads exhibition against their counterparts from Brazil.
It will be the first competition for the women's team following the conclusion of the first half of the WNBA season next Friday as the pro league takes a month's break until the London Games are completed in early August.
Rules Note
In Thursday's newsletter,which Commissioner Kessler distributes before every game to all in attendance, he noted the following: Because there is no shot clock the 5-second "closely guarded" rule will be enforced.
Basically, this means the offensive team must keep the ball moving from player to player if the ballhandler (while on the offensive side of the court) is being closely guarded (within 3 feet).
If the ballhandler fails to advance the ball, this will be called a violation, and the ball will be turned over to the defensive team. And, of course, the 10 second rule to advance the ball from the backcourt to the frontcourt will also be enforced.
Additionally, players are asked to co-operate by removing all jewlery before competing. And the commissioner thanks you and wishes continued success to all.

Looking Ahead
Here's the schedule for Tuesday night, with records, and Thursday night, which obviously won't have records until the next report covering Tuesday's action.
On Tuesday, July 10th, in the 7 p.m. games Black (5-0) will be getting a challenge, record-wise, meeting Hunter Green (4-1) on Court 1. Royal Blue (2-3) meets Columbia Blue (1-4) on Court 2, while Lime Green (5-0) will meet Gold (0-5) on Court 3.
The three 8:15 p.m. games have Ash Gray (3-2) meeting Orange (1-4) on Court 1; Purple (3-2) and Cardinal Red (3-2) will be breaking a deadlock meeting on Court 2; and Vegas Gold (1-4) and Kelly Green (2-3). will meet on Court 3.
On Thursday, July 12th, the 7 p.m. games match Cardinal Red against Royal Blue on Court 1; Gold against Orange on Court 2; and Kelly Green against Lime Green on Court 3.
The 8:15 p.m. contests match Hunter Green against Purple on Court 1; Vegas Gold against Columbia Blue on Court 2; and Ash Gray against Black on Court 3.
Lime and Black might stay unbeaten after next week's action, though even with a loss they could be 1-2 going into the following week when they will collide Tuesday night July at 7 p.m. on Court 1.
The Lime team has put up the most total points to date this season while the Black squad has allowed the fewest.

Breaking Ties
Here's how seeds would occur if the playoffs were determined right at this moment.
Eventually the competition may make things clearer than now but for the sake of some organization here's how the order within ties were set, especially since there's not a lot of head-to-head.
1st Place: Breaking tie of Lime Green vs. Black. -- Lime Green beating Hunter Green is a better quality win since there's no head-to-head yet.
3rd Place: Hunter Green -- record. No tie to break.
4th Place: Breaking tie of Purple vs. Ash Gray vs. Cardinal Red. Once entire standings determined, within this group, Cardinal Red gets a head-to-head over Ash Gray, Purple has no head-to-head but no negative loss within the group, and that is better than Ash Gray losing head to head to Cardinal Red.
7th Place: Breaking tie of Kelly Green vs. Royal Blue. Kelly Green beating Purple tops Royal Blue Blue beating Ash Gray but not by much.
9th Place: Breaking tie of Vegas Gold vs. Orange vs. Columbia Blue. Vegas Gold has a head-to-head win over Orange and then Orange beating Royal Blue is worth a quality win in the tie break while Columbia Blue has nothing right now.
12th Place: Gold -- record. No tie to break.
