Guru's Summer League Report: Orange Holds First As Villanova's Leer Scores 29

HATBORO, Pa. – Individual explosive scoring performances virtually across the board in all five games highlighted Thursday night’s action in the Philadelphia/Suburban Women’s NCAA Summer Basketball League, which featured a narrow 64-62 win in overtime by Orange against Columbia Blue to hold first place at the Kelly Bolish Gymnasium – home of the AAU Renegades – near Willow Grove.

White gained its first win rallying and holding off Teal 85-77.

Kelly Green stayed right behind Orange with a dominating 78-64 win over Royal Blue while Gold reversed direction snapping a two-game losing streak and taking over third place with an 84-61 win over Purple.

On a day when Villanova coach Harry Perretta learned that a season from now his Big East game schedule will increase by two games from 16 to 18 because of the addition of Texas Christian to the conference things could be not so bad if his Wildcats can score like they did Thursday night.

Villanova red-shirted freshman Emily Leer on night number six on the summer league schedule had one of the best overall performances of the season scoring 29 points for Orange (5-1), while Lehigh sophomore Marisa Repasch added 16 points.

Leer’s 29, also achieved Thursday night by Gold’s Jasmine Elum, a Bethune-Cookman senior, ties for the third best individual performance of the season to date. La Salle graduate Ashley Gale on Purple scored 34 in a game and Temple graduate Ashley Morris on Teel scored 31.

All class designations in these Guru posts for active collegians reflect their status when school resumes in September.

Columbia Blue (3-2), which fell to a two-way tie for fourth with idle Black (3-2), but just 1.5 games behind first, got 16 points from senior Allison Hostetter and 11 from sophomore Alexandra Lennon on the squad composed entirely of Division II West Chester players.

In the first win by White (1-4), Villanova junior Jesse Carey had 24 points and Wildcats senior Laura Sweeney, an all-Big 5 second team honoree last season, scored 15 to beat a Teal (2-3) squad composed primarily of former Temple players who narrowly avoided a forfeit by playing with the just five players the entire 40 minutes.

However, two players with backgrounds other than Temple led Teal in Lakia Stewart, a 2007 graduate of Kent State, who had 24 points, while Drexel 2002 graduate Michelle Maslowski, one of the Dragons’ all-time scorers, produced 16 points.

Team White’s Sweeney actually has two seasons remaining at Villanova because she was red-shirted her true freshman season.

Incidentally, Tim Green, who officiates in the WNBA, is working some summer games this season and was on the scene Thursday night.

Meanwhile Kelly Green (4-1) stayed a half-game behind Orange with a win over Royal Blue (3-3) as Lehigh sophomore Kelly Peterson scored 24 points, also hitting six three-pointers, while St. Joseph’s junior Katie Kuester scored 18 points, and incoming Lafayette freshman Kelly Loughney scored 16 points.

Incoming Division II Holy Family junior Ana Cruz did one better than Peterson’s long-range shooting, hitting a league season-high seven three-pointers on the way to 28 points for Royal Blue. Holy Family sophomore Carolyne Heston scored 13 points while her Tigers classmate Maggie Serratelli scored 12.

Kuester’s dad John Kuester, who had coached the NBA Detroit Pistons the past two seasons, was recently hired as an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers under new coach Mike Brown, a former teammate when the two played for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Gold (4-2) got another sensational night from Bethune-Cookman senior Jasmine Elum, who had 29 points, while Addie Micir, a recent graduate of two-time defending Ivy champion Princeton scored 26 in the win over Purple (2-4), which got 24 points from St. Joseph’s sophomore Erin Shields and 20 from Hawks junior Shelby Smith.

In the other game played Thursday, Cardinal Red (2-3) had an easy 78-62 win over Lime Green (1-5) as Lehigh senior Alexa Williams scored 20 points, Lafayette junior Alicia Manning scored 15, incoming Colgate freshman Stehanie Schultz scored 13 points, 2010 Chestnut Hill graduate Chant’al Hardy scored 12, and incoming Lehigh freshman MaryJo Horgan scored 11 points.

Lime Green, composed almost entirely of Division II Philadelphia University players, got 12 points from Rams junior Kristen Blye, 11 from senior Taylor Peltzer, and 10 from junior Christine Wooding.

On Tuesday night, Orange will be a strong favorite to maintain first when the squad meets Lime Green at 8:15 on Court 3, the only game on that court on the seventh night of the league season.

A key game at 7 p.m. on Court 1 will have Kelly meeting Gold in a matchup between teams in the upper part of the standings. Black and Columbia will take the same court for the 8:15 p.m. contest.

Cardinal will be seeking to stay in the hunt for one of the eight playoff spots at the end of this month when it meets White on Court 2 at 7 p.m.

Purple and Teal will each be trying to stay inside the projected playoff loop when the two meet at 8:15 p.m. on Court 2. Royal Blue has the bye.
